The real victim in this whole story really was Jennifer Hale. She just accepted an acting job. She didn’t force the pay offered to Helena Taylor. The harassment and threats that Hale had to endure over something she had nothing to do with is just horrible.

  • @backtoklondike
    @backtoklondike 2 роки тому +382

I remember Steve Blum (the guy you hear in almost every video game and who also voiced Spike Spiegel) chiming in on the situation about Jennifer Hale on twitter and he made it clear that Hale is absolutely for fairer wages in video games. She was leading in the voice actor strike and has been very outspoken about voice actors getting the recognition they deserve. So that she would intentionally screw over Taylor made no sense to him and that he believed that she knew nothing about the situation. And I believe what he is saying is true too and she was unfairly targeted. But that's also another point striking against Taylor because she absolutely goaded people into harassing Hale. David Hayter was also screwed over for loosing his role as Snake and he was also mad about it and has refused to even play MSGV because of that. But he still wished good luck on Kiefer Sutherland and he didn't send any of his fans to harass him.

I have a simple question to ask of people like yourself, why do they deserve it? This issue is with Foreign Media is that VA is not required to watch/play it. Yes it may increase ones enjoyment of it, but that does not make it required as Subs will allow one to do so. Until you can give a concrete reason as to why it wont happen. In fact doing so will create less VA work as Companies may just decide to not do VA, thus making it even harder for new talent to find Jobs.
I am sure those like HollowedJes will claim I am on the side of the Corpos with this question, but its a big part of the discussion that people refuse to talk about. If you want them to spend more money on VA you have to be able to tell them how it will make them MORE money by doing so. Companies will not decrease Profit just to make life better for someone they dont care about, and dont delude yourself into thinking they do. Until we are willing to look at, and talk about, both sides nothing will change.

Taylor admitted on Twitter this morning/last night that she did, basically, lie by omission: she was originally offered $10,000. Then they offered to increase that to $15,000. She said no. They then offered her $4,000 for a cameo. She still said no, and that's the number she cited in her video.

Jennifer was caught in the crosshairs of this whole thing as a bystander. Something that bothers me still, is Hideki's response to all this with that vague tweet of his. The guy's team is currently facing harassment from a bunch of little shits harassing his team (Jennifer included. She may be freelance, but she contributed to the game's production and I'd consider that as part of the team.) and all he does is stick to that stupid persona he's made for himself on Twitter. I'm not trying to come across as blaming him for something he has every right to do, and I sure as hell would never condone harassing anyone. What I AM blaming him for is being vague about it, letting things stew, and keeping up a persona when frankly, there was no reason to keep it up when people were getting harassed. It'd be like if all of Stephanie's team here were all getting bad mouthed by association and all they respond with is "Yeesh, what a bunch of liars. So disappointed." Sorry if I worded it too aggressively and for blaming the two of you. That was not my intention there.
Anyway, I only really use Twitter to follow and lurk around, and even that is mentally draining.
Regarding Kamiya, could he have been more direct about what had transpired? For sure, and I wish he was. Could he have just not posted and let things blow over? For sure, he should have shown some restraint and just waited things out.
However, maybe he had an NDA or something that didn't allow him to talk further about the VA debacle. I think it might have been Schreier that said that he didn't get the salary info from PlatinumGames (likely due to NDAs), and maybe that's the reason why Kamiya could really only be vague about what had transpired between PG and Hellena.
And let's be honest here: Kamiya's not a fluent English speaker. He started his Twitter account partly to practice his English. His Tweet "BEWARE MY RULES" may come across as aggressive, but he's basically telling people that if they Tweet at him in English, he'll block them (again, stemming from the Bayo2 abuse). Again, that's something most people wouldn't really know about unless they've been following him before 2014 (Bayo 2 came out September 2014).
As an aside, what's funny is that as part of The Wonderful 101 Kickstarter, you can get Kamiya to block you on Twitter, so this persona of his is something that even PlatinumGames leans on lmao.

thing is, 15k is within union standards. It's above, actually, so if she wants better pay she needs to negotiate with her union, not be on twitter calling out Platinum games when they went above the normal asking price. That behavior is essentially trying to grift her way to a higher paycheck because she glanced the profits that the Bayonetta franchise had earned and got dollarsigns in her eyes, even though the first game is basically cult and the 2nd almost flopped.
As the industry grows that money needs to go to the people putting in the actual work, I agree, but if we're having this conversation around voice actors we should also have it for developers, artists, composers, writers, and so on. I know that VAs are somewhat unique in that they're always contract hire(composers and producers are as well unless it's massive studios that have their own fully functioning music department), but the monthly pay for the actual game developers can still be considered ridiculously low for the success that these game companies are receiving.

I'll be honest, fuck off with residuals for voice actors. You can't realistically give everyone residuals, so why should voice actors be the ones to get them? They sure as hell aren't the ones putting in the most time and effort into making the game, they're not even the ones putting in the most time giving life to the character they're voicing. Also, voice actors can then get money at conventions for their autograph, anyone else who worked on the game can't.
I don't mind arguing for them to get a good wage for their work, but this entire discussion seems to make them out to be so much more important than they actually are.

@Sara Øverby It's not. People suddenly going "Bayonetta is huge" are fucking laughable. This series wouldn't even EXIST anymore if Nintendo didn't reanimated it cause it was failure sale wise. @Sara Øverby Nope. Bayonetta 2 is also available on the Switch. It sold 1.5 million Wii U and Switch combined. This has nothing to do with WiiU's performance. It's a niche game in a niche genre, rated M. Original Bayonetta is on all platforms from PS3 to PC, and still hasn't shifted a ton of copies.

One of the things that I think it was a bit sketchy about Hellena's story is that apparently Kamiya can't speak English or his knowledge is limited. If she talked to him, he might have used a translator or google translate. And not to defend a big soulless and heartless corporation, but also Kamiya doesn't need to know how the VA association works in the Western, he might know about the Japanese side but how much he knows about the US and UK?
Also Hellena calling out Jennifer Hale was so innelegant. If it wasn't Hale, it would have been anyone else. If there is a role and auditions, it would be filled. End of story.

The games industry is gonna counter "They wanted me to voice the main character in a game that they expect to make half a billion dollars in revenue for only 4 thousand." With "Nah, we offered her 15 thousand."
The difference between 4k and 15k is irrelevant when the final sales figures for every AAA game are the entire point of the issue. Publishers are hoarding 99% of profits while devs, actors, testers and all the other people who do the actual work get paid slave wages. The actress in this particular case being a lying Terf doesn't change a thing.
