@@411Outdoors as an older Japanese Jujitsu practitioner, (lots of Katana/Wakizashi/Tanto training) the first thing I do with my new knives is remove any clips from the sheath and convert it to a static line sheath. It’s easy, just run paracord through the sheath and use a Double Fishermans knot (it must be a Double Fishermans knot for safety don’t use any other knot and no it’s not a knot that’s used much in fishing) to make a large adjustable loop. This makes the sheath a static line carry sheath. The loop can then be lengthened or shortened as required by moving the knots (pulling on the line has no effect on the length). Now simply take the line and wrap it round your belt or a belt loop or around your waist or shoulder. Once tied to your belt etc just put the sheath in your waist band. When you wish to deploy your blade just grab the handle and pull and it’ll automatically deploy and the sheath will still be attached to your belt. The advantages of static line carry are that it’s much much more comfortable than a bulky clip, and that the knife can be moved around the waist band on the fly extremely quickly when moving or sitting etc to maintain comfort. It’s easier to conceal the knife. It’s easy to place the blade centreline and easily deploy the blade with either hand. Deployment is also very very quick as the knife can be deployed in the direction of your attacker. It’s also much easier and safer to sheath the knife as you can see it and use two hands to sheath it. I’m sure if you search static line carry or something there must be a video on it. It’s a very old method that’s been used by the Japanese for hundreds of years now. I hope you do get a chance to try it, as people I show this method almost never go back to clips again.
@@411Outdoors I really hope it is useful to you. It’s so much more comfortable, it’s safer and it’ll allow you to deploy the Kobun much faster. I think a static line carry sheath is actually very appropriate for this knife as it’s a Tanto with a Japanese name. The Japanese have been using static line sheaths for carrying the Tanto for well over a thousand years. Kobun (コブン) is Japanese slang referring to the rank of soldier in the Yakuza. A Yakuza (also called bōryokudan or gokudōgang) boss is called Oyabun meaning “boss” literally “parent status” and their followers are called Kobun meaning “apprentice” or “protégé” literally “child status”. great movie man! left an impact on me as well , that ambush was nasty Very cool knife , the motorcycles in that movie I remember were wild, you can get prob a guy to make a leather sheath for you but the polymers give you protection , leather prob be ok and faster, it has some disadvantages , years ago CS supplied leather
Why not try a ulticlip to keep the sheath fixed ? Another guy made the same point...the kobun is so much cheaper than most and very very light....appreciate your review
Have you tried flipping the belt clip upside down so it pulls against your belt instead? The knife may be backwards though but if you put it on the other side of your body and do a cross draw itll be straight again. (Downside of asymmetrical knifes) The clip could be strong enough to hand upside down with no extra force, you need the strength the other way. Maybe manufactures should think about this instead of just trying to make the clip stronger and stronger. It would also help if the clip was squared off and not a ramp so it gripped the belt at a little 90 degree.
I like this blade, but it became a novelty pretty quick. I found it difficult for day-to-day carry with the exception of getting an multi clip for the sheath. that being said I like your idea.
@@411Outdoors thanks for your honesty. I went with the cold steel gi tanto again bc the first one didnt disappoint. Im kinda like you i know what i like and im a minimalist sort of. I dont wanna try every single thing out in the whole world.
Good afternoon buddy. You had me at tanto! 😂. Seriously though, think back to those round tip buck knifes you had as a kid. After a bit of use, the straight portion was always sharper than the round tip and no matter how hard you tried, you just couldn't make the round bit a razor blade. A tanto goes from straight edge to straight edge, much easier to maintain. For daily precision tasks that require a finger along the spine, there's very little learning curve in terms of technique, example cleaning a fish, chopping vegetables etc. The ease of maintenance easily outweighs an adjustment in technique. That particular example might present some challenges simply because of its large size, but for heavier utility tasks, (kindling) and of course combat, it has distinct advantage. In terms of the sheath movement making the draw harder. Paracord my Friend! I typically carry a couple of six foot pieces anyway. You can certainly use one to secure the sheath to your belt. The only downside is it takes longer to change into a fresh pair of pants. 👍
Yeah just got to strap that sheath 2 your belt some how that's the same trouble I had. I was disappointed but I just put it in my pocket I still have not had a answer how you can mount it to my belt. That clip is not tight enough to hold to your belt. I wish cold steel could have gave with it a better belt carry but the price is cheaper than a voyager XL folder that's why I bought 3 of them.
Great vid! Just subscribed:),ive also had the kobun awhile now and it is pretty awesome. Also for a quick draw trick, put the knife in your front right pocket, either using the steel clip or not,but put your hands on the grip, then push the kydex sheath off with your thumb whilst simultaneously pulling the tanto out without taking the sheath with it Practice it a few times and u will get it down :) By chance have you checked out the battle ring 2 by cold steel? I'm not even sure where to begin with how practical that thing is,both for self defense And just as a tool, plus it has a ulti clip Would be great to see you do a review of that :)
Youre spot on with the thumb deployment in through trial and error that became my go to say thank you! I have not checked out the battle ring but I probably will because I’m a Cold Steel nut 😂
I wanted to buy one, for 70$. But i am not sure if this shape tanto blade is practical for bushcraft/survival. For example, with bowie, you can drill hole if you need. But not with tanto. Tanto is mostly combat blade.
For a while, I did a pocket carry with Ulticlip but to be transparent, my fanboy days with these knives are pretty much a thing of the past. There are a few Tops blades that I carry now one being the Saw 02 and the other the Loaner. I still really like the Kobun though. Just not as blown away as I once was.

Rarely would actually but not against throwing a knife if it’s a good shot and it’s not Ge only one I have. I’m thinking knife throwing is very rare anyway. I just like knowing how to do it mainly. That is satisfying enough haha
All are made in Asia. So even if it is fake, months later it is worth the money, keeps an edge really well, and I use it everyday. As an old bloke that has over 30 knives, some cheap, some expensive, for the money it is money well spend. And if you look at the line of CS knives, most are not made in the USA. Although I did by it off Ebay, I don't mind if it would be a fake. Now I own a Muela Bowie, the one from that film, and I would be unhappy if that was a fake, hence I bought it directly from the manufacture, a $28 knife not so much, but believe me, I give the knife a 10 out of 10, fake or not. Hope that helped.@@aaronjames7266

Get ya a cold steel magnum tanto their a beast !
Love ur attitude lol
Horizontal carry is really fast. So is upside-down carry. It might be a challenge to mount that one for that, though.
Cool knife and very useful for a lot of things 🙂
Indeed! The Kobun remains a budget fave for me!
@@411Outdoors Do you have review for the small one you carry ? I’m woundering can you run with the small knife you show under your belt ?
@@411Outdoors edit- is the Gerber knife is comfortable if need to running and he is under the belt
@@KhanKubratDulo oh the Kyoto Tanto with zip ties has been a dream
@@411Outdoorsno my question was the small knife (Gerber ) you show in the video do you have review for this because I didn’t know the knife ? And also is it complicated to run with the knife since he’s under the belt
great movie man! left an impact on me as well , that ambush was nasty Very cool knife , the motorcycles in that movie I remember were wild, you can get prob a guy to make a leather sheath for you but the polymers give you protection , leather prob be ok and faster, it has some disadvantages , years ago CS supplied leather
It would be sweet to have a leather sheath with this for sure
@@411Outdoors support your local guys in town do you have any leatherworkers near ?
@@chillios2222 I think my buddy has a connection
It’s a awesome knife
Great review brother! Man, now you’ve got me interested! Thanks brother! Like I need another addiction!👊😂
Hahahaha! I’ve got my mind made up but I’m getting two more tantos and that’s it lol
If length was an issue, you should have gone for the master tanto. it's a short as the kobun, but the grip is superior.
I did own the master for a while. I ended up trading it in for something that I would use a lot more. It felt more like a novelty.
I just ordered this!Thank you for sharing!I just subscribed your channel.I’ll be using this Saturday afternoon and videoing it.Thank you again🔪👍
Very cool! Thank you my friend🙂
@@411Outdoors
Thank you!
Great review
Ordered one, cheap and its cool
Try the ulticlip slim 3.3 instead. Works great for iwb carry in front of your hip . I have my Kobun like that 👍
There are 2 little tabs where the rubber finger guard catches. I shaved them down a little bit with a Dremel to make the draw smoother.
I ordered one yesterday from Blade HQ. 👍🗡
Great blade!
Cool cid you could always tie line through the sheath at thw bottom and anchor it to your leg or somthing and clip to your belt or pocket for one hand
Really good tip 👍👍
The Kobun is an excellent knife. Just wish the Buck GCK was still in production.
Me too! I wanted that knife so bad
Its such a cool fricking knife, i just bought 2 for funzies
Love it 🙂👍
Sweet review dude
I appreciate it bro!
Thanks for the review. Gonna pick this up today. Just subbed also. Stay Ready.
Thanks bro! 💯🙂👍
I used one while contracted, still one piece but the handle came off
I wished these same knives could be redone and full tanged
Love it
🙂👊
By daylights! Fred Durst now managed to sell me on a tanto
Also this knife was used by CIA. Solid piece for good price.
Why not try a ulticlip to keep the sheath fixed ? Another guy made the same point...the kobun is so much cheaper than most and very very light....appreciate your review
Thanks a million🙂. I went back and got me a ultil clip for this one and reviewed it
Isn't that Gerber discontinued?
Have you tried flipping the belt clip upside down so it pulls against your belt instead? The knife may be backwards though but if you put it on the other side of your body and do a cross draw itll be straight again. (Downside of asymmetrical knifes)
The clip could be strong enough to hand upside down with no extra force, you need the strength the other way.
@@411Outdoors a lot of people cant understand that lol. But then i get extra upset when something that could be good, is ruined.
That’s a great idea! Depending on what territory I travel in could be well worth it. Great tips there buddy. I love this as an EDC
I love your channel bro
I appreciate that greatly!
I got an Ulticlip for mine. It carries pretty discreetly in the pocket and Ive just gotten quick with thumb deployment
Has anyone had any experience with how this carries in the boot? I was curious
Great vid! Just subscribed:),ive also had the kobun awhile now and it is pretty awesome. Also for a quick draw trick, put the knife in your front right pocket, either using the steel clip or not,but put your hands on the grip, then push the kydex sheath off with your thumb whilst simultaneously pulling the tanto out without taking the sheath with it
Practice it a few times and u will get it down :)
By chance have you checked out the battle ring 2 by cold steel?
I'm not even sure where to begin with how practical that thing is,both for self defense
And just as a tool, plus it has a ulti clip
Would be great to see you do a review of that :)
Youre spot on with the thumb deployment in through trial and error that became my go to say thank you! I have not checked out the battle ring but I probably will because I’m a Cold Steel nut 😂
@411 Outdoors LLC you need the battle ring 2 :) trust me brother
@@jackwyatt517 wow yea I do👍
HURRY ON ORDERING THE BUCK! We deal buck where I work and that knife is no longer available from them. Awesome knife though
Oh wow! I will probably try to pull the trigger on that this week lol
Gruggs is the man
did you ever saw kobun tang width and thickness
I think it’s 4mm
To deploy the Kobun You must push your thumb against the sheat
Thanks my friend! Yep had to learn that through trial and error.
Is this original cold steel kobun?
It’s an au8s steel. Probably a down graded version
Dude you deffo need to try out the tanto lite from cold steel if you love this one then I highly recommend the lite
I’m gonna look that one up haha! Thanks for sharing 🙂👍
@@411Outdoors honestly for the price it's hard to beat I got mine for around £36 and I love it
Thanks 👍
If I have the Recon tanto, would you recommend getting the Kobun too?
I like the Kobun in a little bit better. You can put a clip on it for great pocket carry
Cheers for the reply. The Kobun is next on my list of knives to get.
Hello sir,
How do you sharpen a tanto, i have an imitation and it gets the job done. I just don't know how to sharpen it in the future
Hello my friend, check out the video i did on sharpens, best sharp and spark. I sharpen a Kobun in that video.. search 411 outdoors sharpens best
@@411Outdoors thx a lot. I will
And you can get it serated had 3 of them
The serated is a scary blade for sure 👍
I wanted to buy one, for 70$. But i am not sure if this shape tanto blade is practical for bushcraft/survival.
For example, with bowie, you can drill hole if you need. But not with tanto.
Tanto is mostly combat blade.
Definitely 👍
thats cool!
🙂👊
Check out the warcraft tanto instead of the recon. Worth the extra cheese.
That thing has a sweet looking handle! Knife obsession is real 😂. Great suggestion 👍
Awesome blade brother, I want to get me a GI tanto, are you going to throw it
My GI is my favorite thrower. So powerful! I will probably get one more Kobun to throw for sure🙂👍 it is awesome for throwing
@@411Outdoors nice brother of the blades
So how are you going to carry it?
For a while, I did a pocket carry with Ulticlip but to be transparent, my fanboy days with these knives are pretty much a thing of the past. There are a few Tops blades that I carry now one being the Saw 02 and the other the Loaner. I still really like the Kobun though. Just not as blown away as I once was.
I love my kobun
Super attractive and deadly haha
@@411Outdoors for sure

Will talk about cold steel Gi tanto it bad ass few year after that buoght nigth shade fgx cat claw tanto this one covret knife undeteactble i only use it at nigth when hear something not rigth it cuts but really for stabbing cold steel make awsome tanto even folding tanto.....
Cheqck out the chaoa push dagger seems dumb but a it a serious weapon and good hand defense if I could ont grab one knife to get in a fight with it's this knife
Why would you throw your weapon away?
Rarely would actually but not against throwing a knife if it’s a good shot and it’s not Ge only one I have. I’m thinking knife throwing is very rare anyway. I just like knowing how to do it mainly. That is satisfying enough haha
I just bought 1 for $28 AUD. Will sub as well.
Thanks my friend 🙂
@@411Outdoors Welcome, warm greetings from Aussieland!
That'll be fake for $28 AUD.
Genuine one is closer to $100 AUD.
