I've a self sustained tank since 2 years, I love it a lot. Betta and shrimps/snails togheter work well. 50 liter, dark start, never got algae
Watch those Amano Shrimp, they're crafty critters. Mine have a habit of grabbing the catfish pellets and taking them to a spot they can't get to. It drives my Pleco mad lol.

The betta is quite the little character. I loved how he reacted like, "Who ME?" , when you wagged your finger at him about eating shrimp. ☺️ This build has really inspired me and I'm not so scared to try a setup like this. Thanks M D!
My dragonscale plakat went berserker on cherry shrimp too - I found them with bites missing :( But he leaves my tiny chili rasbora alone, so weird. I took the betta out this week and added some kubotai rasboras instead thinking the chilis would love it.... and they hid for two days. Had to pull out the kubotai and put Steve (the betta) back in. Always have a plan B!

I really like these follow ups. Even if they are small videos, every 2 month progress and small fixes to the issues that come up are some of the things that help the most in aquascape keeping.

If i was in the uk i would work weekends for free. This is my dream job.
It always gets me when people tell you what you're doing "wrong" when what you're doing is working great for you. I've never successfully kept planted tanks with more than 10 hour lights-on, but that doesn't mean I'd tell someone THEY shouldn't do more than that. So many factors go into all of this OTHER than lighting, so what works for one may well not work for others, and what is a disaster for one may work perfectly for others.
Great job on trimming the pearl weed. Everything looks great. You’re lucky to have such a great store near by. I just went to my local shop to get my clean up crew. What a shock-ottos are going for $14 each and $18 for bronze cories! I live in Hawaii, so there is no chance for online orders. No one ships to Hawaii. I need to move to the U.K. if I want to keep up my hobby. Lucky you.

Correct me if I'm wrong, but aren't the shorter fins characteristics of the female? They tend to be more docile in community tanks.
I added my male betta in, and he's doing great. No aggression. I love bettas, such beautiful fish and their bubble nests!!! Amazing ❤️

Hi there, some questions as I am considering staying my own ecotank. 1) do you do water changes everyday for two weeks and then there after no water changes are required? 2) The soil bags laid at the bottom, will they need changed eventually? 3) Do the plants need anything other than trimming? would appreciate help from anyone. Can you do a no-filter betta tank with a lot of anubias, java fern and floating plants, or does it have to be plants rooted in nutrient substrate?

I have the same but I use an under-gravel filter and only do 8hrs of light.

I have dwarf African frogs and yeah they uproot some of my plants lol. My dwarf sag I'm constantly finding the smaller dwarf sag floating at the top of the tank and I kept finding that every couple of days for the last few weeks. And I was wondering which fish was doing it. And today I saw 2 of my frogs fighting amd they pulled one of the young shoots out lol.

My fish are stupid and always get into the net when I try to skim trimmings off the top.

Ngaw, I so wish I could afford to have a tank to start my own little ecosystem. I'd love to try making a native New Zealand pond (simulation 🤔) tank. We've got fresh lobster and fresh water mussels here. They're becoming endangered due to introduced species like Catfish and some others which I can't remember. The freshwater lobster only eats dead leaves so it would be great for keeping the tanks clean.
My husband trying to get a gourami to put in with our male Betta in our 5 gallon… I was like “yeah that’s not gonna work, and you just wanna watch the world burn” lmaoo, they’re just gonna kill each other and the Tank is not nearly big enough to host a gourami.

hey md ive got the same rack from grack and ive had it for some time but the wood is slowly caving in which makes my tanks un level which has lead to one of my tanks already splitting in half any way to help?
Ahh I love love all of your setups! Well done! Question though, how do you deal with the biofilm accumulating on the top? Doesn't it reduce gas exchange in your tank?

H'ra is super easy without co2, and you can get it red if you get the lighting right. Macrandra and indica bonsai are a bit tougher without co2 but it can be done!

I have a question MD, how does of the beneficial bacteria in the bottom get water flow through the top layer of sand? I know that fine sand can create an anoxic environment which doesn’t work for the beneficial bacteria underneath. And for the “modern walstad method”, does the Seachem soil have a similar amount of nutrients that regular soil does?

i got a small tank of 30 liters with the Dana Walstad method it i currently almost 3 years old, dont even feed the fish anymore and no waterchange in the past 16 months fish quadrupled and hit a natural equilibruim of about 30 shrimp, 30 guppies, 10 pearldanios and 10 neon tetras and a few assinshrimps had one nerite but he dissapeared recently the bastard was already 3 years old lol

MD has, luckily, soft tap water, many of us in the UK have very hard water and sometimes in the summer there are also fairly high levels of Nitrate, certainly above 30 ppm. With hard water I am personally convinced that the practical option is to inject CO2 - and yes, CO2 can kill fish, so care is needed. The US author Karen Randall has written a great and honestly illustrated book with the title Sunken Gardens, I thoroughly recommend the book.
I am not quite sure what you mean by balance, even with good filtration and CO2 sometimes sunlight, poor tap water for a water change, a blocked filter, or an over zealously cleaned filter will upset the balance, as will some foods or over rich plant fertilisers. But most aquariums are fairly stable after 3 months if correctly set-up.

I used to have my betta with rice paddy fish and a bottom cleaner & few snails. I had the hardest time feeding them because my betta would eat way more than he needed while some barely had enough. Of course, he bloated a few times and I was able to nurse him back to health, but the last time I could do nothing to save him because apparently, instead of nibbling away at a cherry shrimp that had died from the shrimp tank that I had placed in for them to SHARE, he sucked the whole thing in himself... Even without the shrimp incident, it was very hard to feed my betta in a mixed tank. How do you guys do it so that the other fish would get enough while the betta would not stuff himself silly?
Something I've heard before is having a small tank or container specifically for feeding those kinds of fish, taking the fish out of the main tank for feeding and putting it back after its eaten, while the others stay in the main tank.
Another brilliant update video, MD. You're one of the main reasons I now have 5 tanks. On one of the FB forums I saw a recurring statement that when the bubbles rise from trimmed plants it's not called pearling. Something to do with the plant trying to repair itself. Any thoughts on that?
You only get real pearling by using pressurised co2.

Hi friend, I'm not a fish but turtle person. I heard though that fighter fishes like bettas should not go with other -even small- fish as it can shorten their life expectation because of constant stress. Do you have anything on this or is it wrong or or?

Hi M.D. just curious 🤔 have you or your friends ever tried a product by (ocean nutrition) ? It's freshly hatched brine shrimp preserved in a little glass jar. The fish and shrimp love it! and it saves messing around with hatching etc. It's a newish product, I gave it a go and really good 👍 It lasts for 6 weeks in the fridge once opened and it's around £12.50 on ebay. BTW we loves your vids 😁👍
