Lyrics Below:
Starecase lying face up
Starecat sat on the mat
Looking down
Slide down the bannister
Take the escalator
Slide down the bannister
Or try the elevator
I was standing on the landing
Now I'm standing in the hall
Looking up
Won't someone assist me
Solve this mystery
Somebody assist me
Arrange the symmetry
Muffled footsteps on the carpet
Spiral steps start spinning
Around me
Which floor which ceiling
You're off balance
Which floor which ceiling
It's all upside down
Starecase lying face up
Starecat sat on the mat
Looking down...

I increasingly think that this is a seminal moment in music history. It’s so punk; so dark; so weird; so brilliant.
Stairs: they’re terrifying, aren’t they? And so were late 70s Siouxsie and the Banshees. They changed my life. 🖤
Always loved this underrated classic, takes me back watching Siouxsie commanding the stage so uniquely
John McKay was such a fantastic guitarist
one of the best and most original players ever
Always been an inspiration of mine.
@@whiterat1977 lol, no
@@sunnyjim1355 lol yes
E il BASSO non ti dice nient? Sembra quasi quello del SIMPLE MIND, tipo ...in the cities.... non ti sembrano bassi da FAR PAURA? 😎 che goduria di musica!
ma non la fa più NESSUNO.. SIC...
What a band, Siouxsie is a true icon.
Such a true icon that even at the time was a bit part player, who nobody now under the age of 30 has ever even heard of. Still, at least she's not Toyah Wilcox or Clare Grogan, I suppose.
@@sunnyjim1355 Thank God for that 🙏
@@sunnyjim1355 This hasn't aged well. I'm under 30 and was just introduced to this band through stranger things and I'm now a big fan. Many like me.
@@sunnyjim1355
Im under 30 as well and I discover them two years ago when I was 25 so
I'm 18 and spend a lot of time at local gigs etc and I know a ton of people my age who know and love siouxsie and the banshees
The Scream is a really good album
Absolutely loved the early stuff, like a breath of fresh air after the stagnation of the early 70s.
I have been taking a re-look at the 70's Stagnation , there was still some great music , some of it was aweful , drum solos and the like
Siouxsie is SO charismatic.
Siouxsie is simply mesmerizing to watch dance on this Video of "The Staircase Mystery"!
She's such an Enchantress!
So talented, so timeless. Siouxsie is a true star. You cant take your eyes off her when she struts her stuff!! 😍🎶
YES.
Yo that opening riff is so iconic. You can hear it in a ton of modern hardcore / post hardcore to this very day
Almost sounds like the Aqualung riff played upside down,...or something😵💫...(and if you're all set to respond that, "No, it doesn't!!" please don't...!)
*those some dank, dark, crazy avant-garde dance moves she got goin' there*
unless you come from the north and are aware of morris dancing
We used to study these moves on Top of the Pops back in the day and then do them down the disco.
What a great song. The Banshees were so inventive and original from the start - all four original musicians and their successors.
As I diehard cure fan, it’s so obvious Robert took Siouxsie’s whole essence and evolved it over time
No he did not. He's his own person and has his own persona. You're a terrible cure fan lol. The only thing he took from her was her lipstick because he said he got it from her. Their songs don't even sound similar. He sings from the heart. Very strange analysis.
Did he at least ask her permission :))
@@nunya3960" he sing from the heart"
So Siouxsie doesn't..?
@@Allaloneisallweare thats obviously not what they were trying to say, people always think praising one artist means putting down the other and it doesn't
@@nunya3960 I agree with you, the guitar sound and the way he play is completely different.
Robert Smith play a clean type strat sound and John McKay or John McGeogh more use drived sound. The use of effet is also different and the technic is another world 😊
If you lesson the scream or kaleidoscope and compare to seventeen second you will notice a big difference 😅
However it's clear that John Mc Kay inspired many guitarist included Robert Smith (for the use of effects).
One of the greatest debut albums ever!
This wasn't on the debut album this was a year later 79 but your right about debut album
Well either way switch is still a great way to end the album
And Pure is a good way to start it, ha ha
My profile is Nico to 😭✌🏻💖
@@Scissorlover_ My fave was Edie Sedgwick! What a cute, charismatic and hip young lady!
If only she could sing.
Sedgwick would appear at Velvet Underground gigs and dance whilst the band were performing.
She looked very cool up on stage.
Edie was actually photographed with the band at a photo session but sadly did not have a singing Voice.
She's such a great dancer.
The production on this is great always though it doesnt get mentioned enough.
Bought this as a single back in the day. Playground Twist on the B side. Brilliant.
Think mines got 20th Century Boy on the B side
@@timjoeplant you’re right. I conflated singles into one 45. Both brilliant songs.
Very underrated song
Underrated by whom?

Honestly always wished it was longer
Early Siouxie and the Banshees were definitely better than the subsequent line ups. Seen them in Belfast with the early Cure when Robert Smith had to stand on for Mackay. No drummer that night but it was one of the best gigs I was ever at. Siouxie is incredible on stage. The whole crowd were totally mesmerised. A night I will never forget and an Lp I will never tire of hearing.
Great voice, brings back some great memories
Always loved this ❤️ ah when life was fun...
This is a brilliant song from a brilliant singer and band
Post punk is some of the best music to come out of our beautiful talented country. We may not be the best at Football but only America comes close to our musical abilities.
Remember buying the record from virgin record store in Coventry back in 1979😄😄😄😄😄😄😄siouxsie is the princess of punk !!!!!!!!! Jx
One of their best tunes
Yes .
What a Mesmerizing Enchantress is Siouxsie Sioux!!!
I appreciate this kind of music way more than anything on the radio today. Today it's all about boys bands or everyone trying to rap.
Remember so well when this came out & the tour with the Cure as support
When & Where
@@Mmmm2217 I remember that tour aswell, it was the first gig i ever went too. October 1979.
St Georges Hall, Bradford.
And then when first line up split Robert Smith stepped in at short notice on tour and he already knew how to play many of the songs
Marvellous!!!
my fav song by them:)
Love Love Love ❤
Great early tune by them, love this & Playground Twist 🖤
It's been a long time
This is great!
Wow love it, one of their best!!
One of my fav songs by SIOUXSIE and the banshees

A thing of wonder indeed

I had tickets to see them in September 1979 (the 9th) at the Kinema Ballroom in Dunfermline, unfortunately the band had a meltdown the night before in Aberdeen and the gig was cancelled, never got to see them, but loved the music
Love her dance rhythm
Right now as I’m turning down my bed 2 go 2 sleep, I’m dancin 2 this. I’ll probably dance 2 it again when I make my bed in the morning Lol
I sing this song to my cats whilst feeding them
Jeff Neiss Haha sometimes I bust it out in a store & I’m like, Oh shit ppl are around Lol
@@jayem761 : YOU are obviously intelligent, creative and beautiful Milady Jade!
I sometimes sing this song on the landing and when I am going down the stairs.
That is something I would definitely do 😂
First band I ever saw was siouxie. With John Cooper Clarke in support
My favourite Banshee song
Ha yes I remember seeing John Cooper Clarke supporting a few bands in late 70,s
John Mc Kay looks so friggin hot.
Siouxsie sempre com ótimos músicos...
スージーのダンス最高、才能有るね。
toda vez que escuto da vontade de dançar igual ela xD
Siouxsie é uma Diva eterna u.u
Is so great what song's how this we still be song in that's days your music is of another level
Fantastic song I still think Siouxsie is a babe 🥰👌🏻

She is so cool and so talented.
.ucking Brilliant!!!!!!!!!!!!
Sensacional
Ghad I love this song
Ah yes the Banshees in all of their " Cerebral And Surreal Glory" !! It really was the most " Majestic Of Musical Flights " With " Siouxsie And The Banshees " !!! From Adrian 1965
Thank you❤️🏴
She looks great,she sounds great,she is great! I love Siouxsie all the way, : }
Great amazing
SATB 2022 Superb
So that's where Bono got his moves from
Love the intensity! Great song!..
great
Superb.
Just think, it's just beyond 2022, 3 days into 2023. Has anyone tried this: starting with little good music of today, follow each Artists about who were there influences. Listen to those influences, then go back even further from those influences. I did. It took awhile but I noticed several things about what they write about. Hard Times of course, but lots of it believe it or not, it's about the love of someone. Or a breakup. But I've kept going. What I did was I started using what was popular every 5 years. When I finally finished, I came to a man named Robert Johnson. All he knew how to do was play his guitar. He sung about the great depression and how hard times were to everybody. I just enjoy discovering how things began.
The best Banshees line up
Bring tear 2 a Glass ayeeeeeee x
I’m 58 and yes I was part of a fabulous time thanks

So GOOD :)
Janet Ballion é lenda viva!
Eu ouvi The scream primeiro album da banda e achei ótimo, essa música já conhecia de uma coletânea.
While I like later lineups, this one definitely had a sharp look. Great song too.
never ever gets old, spectacular
I love her and Kate Bush too. I'm 19 and definitely born too late to this world.
Love to hear that young people have discovered
❤️
Шикарно
Superb song. Listening to it for the very first time. Interesting to see the early S & B incarnation. This drummer and guitarist would soon ditch the band and leave Siouxsie and Severin stranded.
Stair cat sat on the mat looking down...Down.^-^
It's one of the reasons they went through so many guitar players, including the exhausted and patient Robert Smith.
🥰
Incrível que pareça, conheci essa banda há pouco tempo, como de fato o futuro está no passado que a gente não conhece. Curto muito esse estilo, lembra The cure!
Man I feel old!
Who is the person that put dislike in this video!??
nicki minaj though i doubt she would know anything about siouxsie.
thevoid99 lolollll
Maybe falling down stairs is their fear or something. You know how some are touchy when you talk about certain topics. Great tune, though :)
Wow! They look so "normal".

@Martin 5559 Yes, we are the elite.
To the shame of me, I had all but forgotten about this goth classic lately. I blame my newly acquired taste for the long dead and obscure Klaus Nomi.
It's post punk imo 🤘🤘
The opening reminds me of U2’s Acrobat
i fucing love omori
oh my god
El sonido me recuerda a talking heads pero mas oscuro se nota la influencia.
Siouxsie's just hot everyone just admit it
Hmm how come this has been uploaded randomly 🧐

Ta parecendo fundo musical de filme de Vampire 🦇⚰️🎸
I'm very good friends with Kenny Morris. He's an abstract Painter and film maker
Is he doing good?
Outside of the great females of Old Ella Diana Ross Martha Reeves Ronnie Spector and all those Jazz and soul sisters I've forgotten .....
