"Closure" performed by Doug Waterman
Dude, the progression of this is fucking insane. I watched long ago when you were still building it from ground up with all kinds of different people and always imagined how fun that would have been. I'm really glad to see the sails coming up, I remember the episode where everyone worked on them in the shop. Congrats on completing a major goal.
Sign of a good carpenter. Hes not afraid to tear it all apart and start over. Because He had a better idea.
She's sailing! What an awesome moment. Congratulations!
Seeing the sails up (even if it's not 100%) was an absolutely beautiful sight. Not having anything to do with it, just watching the videos, made me feel the emotions running around. Great job guys, can't wait to see the next video.
Glad you enjoyed it
Excited to see what speed she can achieve with all the sails up! Great channel amazing work
this has been the most incredible project to follow along over the years!
Doug, this has been my favorite channel for years, I appreciate you sharing this journey with us. I actually have no interest in building a boat from scratch, I just like boats and it's just super interesting and it's been fun to watch. I just wanted to take a second to congrate you on finally getting there. I know you've had celebrations, but really this was the first time I saw you sail. You did it man! You also inspire me to get out there and to create, and that's been an added bonus. I've also enjoyed all the philosophical or therapeutical teachings...keep it up man. Keep inspiring youth and keep on your journey, I just hope you continue to share.
Thanks, I appreciate that.
Hear, hear brother.
My family had a three masted gaff rig for many years. We had the same problem (on a smaller scale, our mast were wooden and 4” in diameter) with the rope and balls to connect the sail to the mast.
We corrected the problem with rigid rings. We used 6” rings cut from a pvc pipe. You would likely need something more robust but I believe rigid rings would work for your application as well.
Our boat was home built 40’ long by 6 ‘ beam, flat bottom with leeboards. Not fancy but the “ Folly” was great fun and got loads of attention.
I can feel that fantastic moment with you! That is so awesome. Seeker has been and continues to be The Project on UA-cam boating scene. Thank you for doing this and congrats!
What an amazing moment!! Seeing Seeker under wind power for the first time. Incredible! Congrats and big love from the UK 🙌🙌
Having watched your channel since it was a pile of rusty metal sheets and an impressive vision, now I must say: This video is REALLY moving. No pun intended. What an achievement of truly epic proportions!
It's been incredibly satisfying to watch you build and even more so to see you sail now. I can't begin to imagine how satisfying this milestone is for you Doug and Betsy and everyone else who contributed to this outstanding project. Thank you SO much for sharing your journey, what an inspiration.
Fair winds and following seas!
PS. I really hope to see Bart sailing with you at some point!
Hi Doug, I have been watching for around 10 years your channel. I am flabergasted to be able to witness this first sail...
I have been, am, will be inspired by this hole adventure/ endavour you have taken. Because of this channel I started some diy projects. Thank you so much for sharing this most inspireing story.
My absolute favoritw thing is the way you invite people to be involved in your project, not only have you shown humility in a way it commands rezpect, but you also demonstrate your great generosity. Teaching and learning arround is the best way to grow.
Thank you for this journey, cleary the process has been worth it.
It's really appreciated letting everyone watch as you accomplish so much
Nothing like raising the sails and cutting the engine! The best feeling in the world slicing through the water with the wind in your sails!
More progress - love watching all of it Doug. I also applaud your philosophy regarding failing and then learning - a natural progression. Kudos to you as always.
Loved your "speech" regarding failure/ and learning. Could not agree more. Failure can be fun, because you can come up with a better solution. Spot ON...
FAILURE IS THE BEST SCHOOL!!!!
Congratulations Doug you have been an inspiration throughout this journey. Here’s wishing you peaceful skies and fair winds.
After owning a marina in Alabama for a long time, I've seen many people wax their anchors to help keep the gulf mud from sticking to it. Doesn't have to be wiped off as you're not polishing it. Several keep some paste wax handy and rub the main sections where it's sticking occasionally. They swear by it, so maybe it will work for you:)
Sure worth a try. Thanks But I am not complaining. It's got fantastic holding ability.
Sometimes I forget that my dreams don,t have to die and that hard work and perseverance pays off. Then I see you sailing a boat that has been over a decade in the making and I remember.
One thing that also stands out and is probably the key to your success is a model of what Regan said paraphrased: You can accomplish anything if you dont care who gets the recognition. You always give so much thanks and praise to your crew and those who help you. You encourage them with the quality of work you see and recognize them when they solve problems for you and find issues. I think if you were the type of person that always took that credit your boat may have died in that yard in Tulsa.
Valuable lessons Doug. A winner in a world of not winners. :)
Well said !
Fantastic , from welding two pieces of metal together, to the winds of success carrying your dreams .
The innuendos. So many innuendoes. Also how could a pirate ship only have one wench. Lol
Man, I found this channel when you were filling the keel with lead. I've bought a new house, gotten a law degree, and had 2 kids in the time since I first started watching these. This was the most long-term project I've ever followed on UA-cam.
It's not a good comment on our instantaneous gratification society that there are so few long term projects.
Great solutions come from multiple failures. If you don't find out what doesn't work you will never find out what truly does! Love your videos. Keep it up.
thanks Doug this has been a great journey so far! love to see it sailing. way to go
Amazing and inspirational what you've done!
Very nice expository on what the thinking behind the decisions are and how they fit in contrast with the other types of sail rigs, I very much appreciate episodes like this. Thanks Doug.
I love this quote by Picasso "I am always doing that which I cannot do, in order that I may learn how to do it." Sums you up to a tee Doug! I think my favorite thing with this boat was all the casting. Such a cool process and the possibilities are almost endless! Love ya brother be safe on the water.
Doug thank you for all of the inspirations you give me.
haven't watched in way too long. Started watching from the beginning, life got busy this past year. So awesome to finally see your dream stretch its wings!! Congratulations!
Best Channel on the Tube. All the Best on your Journey.
What a gorgeous site. You must be so proud. Great work. Have been a big fan for years. Thank you so much for sharing your journey.
The look of pride & happiness on your face is priceless Doug. Congrats! Good to see Betsy onboard!
Make that dream a reality! Flying a powered paraglider feels exactly how you are describing your dream. Thanks again for having us on board
They look great Doug, better then what I saw in my head so to speak. Make the seeker look just like it was surposed to be. Good job, well done....
The best part of this channel is im always learning something. The amount of knowledge you gain is incredible.
WAY TO GO!! So happy for you. Thanks for the years of inspiration!
You sir are a Jack of all trades as well as a master of them. I salute you! 👍🏻 been watching you for longer than I can remember and to see her under sail was awesome! 👏🏻👏🏻👏🏻
Congrats on your intial sail & setup
Congrats Doug and all of you. So moving to see you all enjoying the sail. Thoughts went to all of those who have contributed and those who’ve passed on. Happy sailing to you all 😊
Looks like you are all having a wonderful time. That is a big boat.
Amazing work Doug. Love the way you take your time and experiment. Explaining and learning. You can’t rush good cooking. Thanks for the sharing and inspiration.
I appreciate that! And now I know what's wrong with my cooking. : )
Doug you're living your best life. Well done and keep it up! You're an inspiration for so many people.
I couldn't agree with you more. People have no idea what innovation is or what it means. Keep it up! I admire your tenacity and out of the box thinking.
Thank you for the excellent sail plan description! You've Answered lots of my questions.
So gracious in the water, without the engine running just the sound of the water lapping against the hull. What a moment to behold.
Seeing people at the helm reminds me of the man sadly no longer with us that crafted the wood to the wheel.
Cheers Doug and all those brave men and women that stayed with you to build this beautiful boat
That would be Huge Hood. He was an awesome friend, and he is still with me. Good friends never die.
@@SVSeeker He will always be at the helm with you.
Doug,
Since construction was started years ago, I have been desiring the sight of your sails being out in there glory. What a beautiful crescendo to you and all who have gifted their efforts, skills, talents and love. God Bless you all.
Proud of you Doug and crew. We all waited a long time to see the Seeker sail. Bravo.
Wow, you have to be proud of what you have accomplished, persistence a patients paid off.
I am. And proud of the crew and positive thinking folks who helped.
You are creating, learning, building, risking, and DOING more on a daily basis than any of these trolls have their entire lives. Everything we have and know today was discovered by people like you, Doug. This has been and remains an amazing process to watch. Thanks for creating, and congrats on the first sail!!!!
Awesome sail plan, can’t wait to see you on a lean at hull speed.
What an absolutely stunning accomplishment. I mean that that boat is simply ,, WOW!
She looks so different!! Wonderful to see the dream coming together. 👍👍
brilliant. so happy to see her under sail. congratulations!
Sure love this channel Doug, learning a lot about sailing, you explain things that others don't, and we even learn from your mistakes, not mistakes, just found a better way to do it. Keep this up. I got to go on Seeker when it was dry docked at Tulsa. Would love to come help you one of these days when you start helping people do research. I can cook, sweep and mop floors, clean heads or whatever needs to be done. Keep on sailing, my friend.
Lots of interesting operational detail in this post, Doug. I really enjoyed it 😃
Glad you enjoyed it
Congratulations. Really great.
I love every moment of this journey, As someone said " its not the destination it's the journey. " Learning to fail properly is the secret to succeeding and moving forward. I am glad and its why I watch this journey of a thousand fails to that day when sailing will be the ultimate pleasure. My design book is the size of the Manhatten telephone directory. Have a great Day RC
Awesome Doug!
There is something magic about moving either on land or on sea without the aid of a motor! I share in your awe. It's been a very enjoyable journey for me who is now too old to go sailing, I have lost my nimbleness and strength but still remember the magic. Thanks for sharing so much with us.
What a great accomplishment!
Good on you Doug, happy for you and your team and cool dream! 👍⛵
Getting closer and closer to the dream Doug. So incredibly proud of you and your accomplishments. You have amazing people around you and you honestly have been a great inspiration for me and others to really follow our dreams. Im getting closer snd closer to being able to come help and can't wait to shake your hand one day soon. 🍻
Thanks for taking us with you. Moving moments. Proud sails... Your soapbox rant: I relate via writing music. I've never understood why so many musicians work at playing what famous musicians have played on their albums. I write and experiment on my own, looking for something that is mine. It might not be great or earn me a million dollars but it's something I did and that's what motivates me. Out of every 10 hours of music I create I get at least one hour that I love and the other 9 hours are lessons, steps that gave me that one great hour. Mistakes are exactly what you ranted about: necessary.
Great to see Betsy again!!!
"I built this boat on positive thoughts" is probably going to become one of my favorite quotes
You have a lot to be proud of, YOU have done it...
Wow they guy Eric braiding the lines what a change in the look of things. Every scene change with every attempt to raise and lower everything the sails look cleaner and when the breeze hits them for a lack of a better word they look happy. lol
Love the smiles, love from the UK
Well done, been following your adventure for a long time,l am well pleased to see this.
I’ll keep it brief today:
Excellent !🎉🎉🎉!
G'day Doug,,
Seeker looks just fine under sail . Great to see the
BIG SMILE on
your face.
Respect ...!
I known nothing about this world of sailing. Fascinating .
So great to see Betsy! AWESOME, the joy I get from your videos is unexplainable!
I'm so glad I was able to have Charlie and Betsy on board for the first sail. They have both great friends that have given so much to me and Seeker.
Doug, your steadfast level headed approach to all things relating to this journey is commendable and admirable. Keeping trolls at bay is no easy feat, nor is sticking to a vision for so long. I'll admid, when I first saw your videos back before the hull was even welded together, I thought you were nuts. I'm a believer now.
Looking forward to the journey you continue to share with us.
My dad was a bulldog.
The "level-headed" approach would be to learn sailing and go sailing on boats BEFORE building a 74' "sailing" vessel.
@@eurotrash4629 Why do you think that?
So cool you get to work on the sails straight at the beginning of the year.
Thanks for posting and sharing. So grateful to see Seeker underway, OVER TWO KNOTS 😮 Wu Whooo!👍
Wonderful to see you under sail
Inspiring every time.
Little steps at a time, and as long as there's progress towards the goal, take it! We've been here since this wonder was just huge sheets of steel and a jib crane, so we're patient Doug!!!
Love it. 👍You are doin it...Push on
You have made your dream a reality. Well done sir
Your right Doug, nothing wrong with failure. That's how we learn from our mistakes. And when you build, you will make mistakes. What's wrong is giving up. or refusing to try again. As you already know Doug, Life is rewarding when you have the courage to build what you are passionate about.
Thanks for the explanation regarding front mast. I have asked the question several times.
hi its great to listen to you on problem solving on boats it never as easy as people think as a sail boat owner how rebuilt a fifty year old boat nothing ever goes as you think it will you have to be able to adapt and over come problems as they happen witch will always happen just at the worst moments great to watch your adventures sir wishing you fair winds and calm seas happy sailing
Love your work keep it up, love you all :)
It's amazing what you have to go through getting everything fine-tuned there's just a lot of things going on it's not one of them things that magically happens definitely enjoyed the Vid you're right about one thing when you buy something out of the box it's already been thought out unlike trying to make or do something new to you mistakes will be made but can be conquered
We will know that society is doomed when you buy a jigsaw puzzle and it comes assembled. : )
Awesome Captain Doug, awesome, " A Ship Ahoy " , " Sail upon tha horizon ". What a Great moment. All the best regards from here on the West Coast side of Australia 🌏 Batavia Coast 🙏🖖🤟🇦🇺
My brain is exploding. So much information. Great!!!!
Such a great sight to see it sailing! And it's nice that you are improving and tuning the sails and rigging iteratively. When it's all good in light winds, you take it to slightly stronger wind and see how it behaves, and so forth. Great. I am very curious how the ship will do once it's going at full speed with 20 knts of wind and full sail.
Thanks for the information on battons.
Seeker looks a fine lady displaying all her canvas! You must be very proud. What a journey, what an inspiration! Now I'm looking forward so much to seeing her really stretch her legs.... 🙂⛵🛠️💪❤️
I recall those days. First sail with our 52f ketch in 2005. No feeling bigger, .... well, Launch, lifting on the truck, on the road, pastors blessing, ... boat gives you moments from day one...
Fantastic to see Seeker under sail. I am really looking forward to learning more about the junk rig and how to handle it. The idea of adding a bow sprit is interesting and I am sure the need or advantage of adding it will be determined by performance as you move forward. Have you considered making it able to hinge upward for when you are at dock. That is what Salt & Tar did with theirs. They do the install and talk about it in their episode 105. I am sure that you could engineer and build a system.
THAT IS SO COOL
Amazing video, explanations and work Dough & Co 🇸🇪
wow, what an accomplishment!! it was all worth it sails out, beautiful !!... and with so much good yet to come, why waste a minute on unhelpful comments! well done Seekers!!
hi Doug ur motioval speechs are always real good, im 31 now and made some huge mistakes in my life but u learn always from them. trying to get better life now, brilliant video as always thanks!
Oh, good , you had the dream.... that's the key dream for your sailing creativity... it's happened ... your there... keep it up... It's how it happened in my Junk.
You rock. Stay just as you are :)
I've been watching since Seeker was sheets of steel in your yard. This is the video I've been waiting for! Congrats!!!
OMG!!!! Beautiful Doug!!! I'm gonna come back in a month or so for another shoot!
If you'll have me!!
Magic! Moving under sail, a bit of heel, fantastic!
love your work soap box boy.
