Being able to weld gives a person a completely different outlook on reality in general...it completely changes the way a person looks at problems. That attitude carries over into non-welding aspects of life too. You've got a good thing going there with folks sending in their photos of what they're working on or have accomplished. As much as I love what I learn while watching you I love the public input the best. Extremely inspirational. BTW...I doubt if you even own a couch or would even know how to use one if you did.

Doug, You get better and better at TIG welding! great! I have a tip for you: Put the tungsten electrode in a cordless drill and put it on the grinding wheel while spinning. You dont even have to take the gloves off for sharpening the electrode. Super quick.
Please dont sharpen the electrode on the side of the wheel. That way you end up with grinding marks 90 degree to the electrode, with actually hinders the current flow. The grinding marks must run axially. The current runs smoother and you get a more focused arc. Try it!

If you want to scratch start a TIG Arc safely and not ruin your Tungsten, clamp a piece of Copper, about 8 mm thick beneath the point where you want to start your weld, scratch start on the copper and than move the arc to your weld. Thus done, the Tungsten won‘t be ruined that fast.

I used to have one of those welders and I hated it with a passion . The duty cycle is next to nothing , the voltage drop is real and it will burn a 3/32's in good welding conditions . If you manage to get the little one to work for you I hope is serves you well . I just would not count on it . With all that said I did not get use the tig all that much on this one rig so I can't speak to the tig side of the things with this rig. Just keep in mind if you have to count on it for that big ass steel boat ! lol be safe fair winds and following seas . Maybe it's a stupid idea, but if you had two lines going from the cradle tips to the top of the mast they could be attached to the base of the mast with cleats when the sail is in use, and tensioned to guide the sail in the cradle when the sail is furled.

That wasn't a leg extender, that was a portable hump. Leg extenders are those things drywallers use when they do mud on the ceiling that are like stilts. Now, what you put between the davits is a portable hill, but it is single sided. Then there are those blue thing that drive around and go up and down, they are altitude adjusters.

I found easiest way to sharpen tungsten symmetrically and fast is to chuck up your tungsten in your cordless drill and grind it on bench grinder with the drill running. Sharpen both sides of tungsten and when it gets contaminated you can just flip it around in the tig torch. Another benefit of the drill is if your quick you can pull it out of the tig torch while hot and plop it in the drill chuck without burning through your gloves and get to sharpening without wasting too much time to cool down. Don't even have to take your gloves off, a good suggestion is two lengths of taper for the diameter.
