Sleeper were one of those bands that emerged into view just at the tail end of Britpop; it always seemed like they were running after the bandwagon. They (and by 'they' I mean Louise since no one even knew the names of the rest of the band) were held in scant regard by the music press and other bands. It seemed like they weren't truly there for the music, just donning the right threads and haircut to fit in. Louise was a "motormouth" wheeled out for interviews and to make the indie press look slightly less sexist. She was really a pop star in indie clothes; nothing wrong with being a pop star but people disliked the use of disguise. You just knew Justine from Elastica and Courtney Love, both even more ambitious than Louise, (and better dressed) were living it not JUST dressing for it. Whereas Sleeper were more like Shed (sucking) Seven. What's unexpected is that Louise is a damn good writer! Of books rather than songs.. Behind those perpetually blinking eyelashes and naked ambition, was an intelligent person with something to say. Highly recommend Different For Girls - her recollection of her indie pop ride. While the book makes it obvious that she's no PJ Harvey or Jarvis Cocker, she is a fantastic opportunist. She faked an NME review and duped actors into moshing out at an early gig to create fake hype. It's obvious why they were short-lived, (zero vision, no "us against the world" band mentality to bond them together, and little direction) but for sheer initiative and nerve, Louise certainly earned her five mins of fame.
To be fair I don't think even Louise knew the names of her band mates! I loved her autobiography - she comes across as a really interesting and highly likeable person which is a refreshing change as women tend to be neither.I think the problem for her (apart from the limited songs) was that she was a bit too old, wise and intelligent for the whole rock'n'roll charade.

They were very much of their time and after the failure of "Pleased to Meet You" just drifted away. I caught them on that tour, you could tell they were mailing it in. Its all captured brilliantly in "Different for Girls" which I urge all fans of that era to read. She used the phrase "I`m one of the herd again" or something similar. Not sure about the "zero vision" but I think you`re right about the mentality though. I always thought they gave up far too easily but at the time BritPop was over so I guess they meant to lie low and return but never did. Although they are touring later this year playing Manchester. Lush just finished a reunion tour so maybe the 90`s survive in some form after all. Oh, I also fancied her like mad at the time so theres that. Christ, who didn`t?

They were a great band, Louise is one of the most talented songwriters of her generation. If you can't hear that from their music, you are tone deaf.
