- What makes Death Note stand out from other shonen is how it creates scenarios more intense and gut wrenching than any fight could be, as well as giving us a morally gray or somewhat of an anti-hero protagonist, for lack of a better term. Similarly, breaking bad creates scenarios through Hank and Walter's proximity to one another in order to leave audiences as stressed out and second guessing as Walter himself. Though L eventually fell in the face of Light Yagami’s unstoppable ambitions, Could he potentially catch and keep Walter White in prison?

to be fair light kind of threw. he literally confirmed his supernatural powers and the fact he was close to a police officer immediately. I dont think Walter ever threw that hard but obviously the nature of the case is much easier to figure out

Walt being heisenberg was meant to be obvious but since hank so deeply believed walt couldnt do anything harmful he never even thought of the possibility
Skylar didn't really figure it out, she just found out he was pushing drugs to get a lot of money. She thought he was dealing weed with Jesse until Walter admitted to Meth.
Saul is incredibly resourceful and has a bunch of criminal contacts and was kidnapped and recognized Walt based on his cough, and was effectively told the connection with Heisenberg and he put it together.
Both were pretty directly handed the information rather than having obfuscation muddying the waters, and there's more to consider with evidence than simply "I'm pretty sure", you need more than a hunch to serve a warrant and gather evidence.
Since L found out who Kira is right from the bat and his only problem was gathering evidence to properly accuse him, he would easily catch Walter.

but he would have the same issue with evidence, especially with super lawyer Saul Goodman. Saul would never allow L to get away with bugging Walters house (though he did it himself)
a pretty big part of walt not getting caught was how extremely lucky he was, he actively worked to undermine his own security, light was significantly more cautious and didn't have someone who thought the best of him searching for him. Walt would lose entirely because he chose not to hide what he was doing

Walter kinda destroyed everything he touched. 95% of the people he killed or died because of him, didn't really even need to die. After a few of the crazy mexicans early on who directly attacked him/ Jesse, there wasn't really a need for any of it. He was just super paranoid and the architect of his own downfall and poison to all around him.
Best example of his luck is how Walt had to actively mislead Hank to keep him off his trail. If Walt was ever close to L in the way Light was, L would have figured Walt out immediately.

Saul almost turned a life sentence into a few years before he sabotaged himself. He'd very likely get Walt no time at all or under 10 years somehow. I don't know if it would matter much since Walt's cancer would take him out long before he served even 5 years.
That would be an easy win for Saul, if he is being payed enough.
L has no knowledge of the legal system, so it could play to Sauls favor. But remember Walt is already one of the most wanted men by season 5, so it would come down to a favourable plea deal.
The only reason Walt wasn’t caught was because Hank overlooked him, he should’ve gotten caught as soon as the equipment went missing
Exactly i hate how people act like walter was really some big mastermind when really if the show focused on another detective besides hank who is his family he would have easily been caught within the first two seasons
Yeah. Walt is not really calculative or elusive like people think he is, he is mostly lucky that other criminals were more dangerous and given more attention.
Well the thing here is that Walter makes serious mistakes early on that detectives (Hank in this case) overlook leading to him getting to refine himself. This exact pattern plays out all the time in real life with serial killers who are totally considered elusive and “talented”

He's just short-sighted early on in the series, and then gradually becomes very vulnerable to his own narcissism being prodded at.

Only issue with this is that L wouldn't interact directly with Walter. The only reason L showed himself during the Kira case was because of the outlandish situation that it entailed. For something like this case he'd probably just use surrogates and avoid direct communication all together.
This is something a lot of people forget.

Before I even watch the video I want to say there is no way L would fail to catch Walter. L is bordering on superhuman levels of deduction, and think about all the times hank got close without being anywhere near as intelligent.
L would get to Walt decently quickly, but I definitely think a death note style game between him and Gus would be much more drawn out and interesting.
Light still wins pretty easily. Breaking bad is more realistic, death note isn’t.

@@WalterJ.Moriarty The best detectives in the real world are never going to factor in the supernatural when making an investigation. The funding would get immediately cut once management hears that their detectives are "chasing ghosts" as they'd probably put it. Light having the death note in real life would be almost impossible to catch. Death Note's biggest weakness is that Light and L sometimes don't feel like two characters trying to outwit each other, it feels more like the author is trying to outwit the audience instead. L makes a bunch of conclusions that just happen to be right with no real reasoning or logic in order to move the plot along. Yes, believing the book is a factor is fine. But no real detective is going to believe it's a weapon of mass destruction. The very definition of contrived. I still like death note, for the record.

Walt got really lucky at the beginning and then he had Saul, gus and Mike to cover up his trails for him and when it failed he used Jesse as a coverup and that eventually backfired
To be fair, Hank could have caught heisenberg too, a lot earlier, but he just let his predispositions on walter's personalities and family relations affect his judgement.

Jesse said it best himself. Walter is super lucky and manipulative, but he's not a more calculating foe than someone like Mike or Gus. Walt's luck is really what kept him alive in breaking bad, and it ran out when Hank got bored while shitting.

L and Gus are very similar characters, and Gus is much careful and well organized than Walt so it'd only be slighty harder for L to catch Gus.

Hank was too close to Walter to see things clearly. He was mislead by years of seeing Walter living a reserved, and even afraid, life. His biggest mistake was underestimating the impact of Walt’s cancer diagnoses. If they didn’t know each other Hank would of followed up more on Walt as a lead ever since they found the high school lab equipment missing
If L was starred in Breaking Bad, it would be a 1 episode OVA instead of a 5 seasons series
I think Hank is more comparable to Soichiro Yagami, Light's father. They're both family members and more of an obstacle than anything. Light/Walter never set out to kill Hank/Soichiro, just keep him in the dark and evade his suspicions.
But unlike Light, Walt never even considered killing his family. I feel Light would have been willing to kill his own mother if the situation needed it.

I think L could do it, but he'd need to do it pretty quickly or else he's going to be taken off the case or arrested himself for his love of using illegal information gathering techniques and imprisoning people he just suspects. Even if L got a bunch of confessions recorded using bugs, unless he had a warrant to place those bugs, none of the recordings will be permissible in court.
I think it was important for Hank to realize the Walter connection by himself, if someone claiming to be smarter than Hank came to that conclusion first, I think Hank's first instinct would be to strongly resist L, both because Hank doesn't liked to be 1-uped and he has a strong bias in how he sees Walter. He may grow to resent L.

If Saul was still in the picture I think L's biggest hurdle to cross wouldn't be catching Walter but having enough irrefutable evidence to charge him with something harder than a slap on the wrist.
Saul was able to work out multiple life sentences to just like 17 years with parole, he would be a genuinely big thorn in L's side that'd force him to be extremely thorough as to avoid something similar happening to Walt.
L vs Saul would be intresting in a case
L doesn't have and never has had any interest in the court system, he literally just wants to solve mysteries. He would solve this mystery in 5 minutes behind a computer screen and if Walt got away because of Saul, L would just be amused by the incompetence of American prosecutors.

It would be very easy for L to catch Walter White. The reason it was so hard to pin down Light as Kira was because Light is an incredibly smart, charismatic man that could not only match L in intelligence but could use his words and likeability in-person. Never underestimate the value that charisma had for Light, everyone is so focused on his mind that nobody really discusses how he could win against other investigators simply with how he talks and holds himself.
Heisenberg is a genius when it comes to chemistry, that just does not help against L who probably even used that nickname to clue in to the fact he is Walter White.
12:04 Would be a very interesting ending for Breaking Bad if Walter & Jessie were caught, arrested and put on trial, only for Saul to point out that L's methods of acquiring said information was unconstitutional, then *L* gets arrested while Walter and Jesse walk free. From here, I'm honestly not sure if Walter & Jesse would go back to cooking or try to live normal lives considering Gus would still be alive at this point and would likely be hunting Walter down. I guess thats not much of an "ending", but it would certainly be the beginning of the end for the series one way or the other (be it Walter lives, dies, or walks free)

L wouldn't stop even if he was arrested or in jail. Additionally, L would probably have used one of his false identities when taking this case at all, it just doesn't seem up to the 'Top 1' case rate attributed to the L persona vs. his others.

He is pretty much above the Law and all police in the world follows what he says, to the point you could argue him to be the most powerful person in the world
However I do see him losing the case, as he doesnt care about his methodology being illegal, and not really minding that since in his view catching the criminal and making him confess is already a win
So if the Justice System releases Walter(or released Kira) after he caught him I think he'd just think thats on them and not really give a crap

There's also the fact that in this case much like every single case before Kira case, L wouldn't show himself. It would be either Wattari or someone else acting on his behalf while L would be likely half a world away or at the very least at a safe distance which only Wattari would know.
Considering L was able to figure out what area Kira was in after a week and that he was using a magic notebook from a death god in a world that was much like ours (in terms of average people not knowing about magic/gods etc). I’d say yeah, L could in like 5 minutes

@@prodsage2719the video starts by saying that L's investigation starts just a little before Walter's deal with Gus, and you know what Gus does to people investigating on his activities ( the only reason why Hank was still alive after Gus's death is because Walter was in the way and prevented Gus from killing him ) , breaking bad is not a game of trying to get each other's name, if someone finds some evidence of Gus illegal activity going on, he's dead.

Now make a sequel asking if L would beat Saul defending Walter in court. After all, L's goal was never ONLY to discover if Light is Kira. His goal was also to find evidence and reveal how he's doing the killing so he could get him declared guilty in court.
In which it will have to be by "American" Law Standards and NOT "Japanese" Law Standards. And inb4 some moron wants to try to mesh the two. NO. You play it to the field ruling so in short L really needs to make sure all his evidence and procedures we're given the green light during the investigation.

@kaze0fox honestly it's hard to say whether L actually has to abide by conventional law standards or not. Given that within the world of DN he's a super detective with jurisdiction pretty much anywhere on the globe, maybe he has his own set of 'law standards' that he can use regardless of where he is. Pretty speculative tho and yeah still Saul would be a pain in the ass for L

Yes. Just looking in the past and history of her daughter. Her mother history and you can find doppio. See now that would've been way more interesting than this video. Unlike Heisenberg, Diavolo is really, really good at hiding his identity and is from an anime as well, so it'd be a more fair match up
I think L trying to catch Gus (as someone previous said) is a much more interesting idea. I would, actually, put Gus closer to L in terms of intelligence. He is careful and a great actor. His biggest weakness is his connection to the Salamanca family.

the idea that Gus would panic and decide to get rid of Walter is an interesting one but the idea that Gus could probably kill L seemed unlikely considering how well protected he apparently is.
L obviously isn’t immune to letting bad apples get close to him, specifically Lights dad being a gateway for light to interfere, but he is still highly restrictive on those who even get to see him.

The only inaccuracy I can see here is that L usually doesn’t approach cases very close. I believe in the manga, when he first meets the task force, he mentions that him getting so close with the people he’s working with is like an admission of defeat, something he has never done before. He would most likely conduct this investigation by computer, especially with evidence this transparent. In the beginning, Hank might be the only reason he can’t extensively surveil the Whites, but he can still interrogate Walter all he needs to by having another FBI agent, for instance, interrogate him in public with questions L had prepared, recording the conversation, too. And his evidence being inadmissible in court is also a nonissue for L; he’s stated to be basically immune to and even supported by the police forces of multiple nations, and, in a case with lower stakes than Kira, I doubt his immediate approach would be to incarcerate Jesse and Walter once he knows enough. Like you said, there’s already plenty of incriminating evidence, but L and the other Wammy’s kids all go for like a knockout punch to prove their suspect is guilty before they’re finished.
If Hank could find Walter White was Heisenberg, L should be able to find about the blue meth easily.
Walter was constantly making mistakes purely because he couldn’t let go of his ego so I think it would take L a week at most to catch Heisenberg

Also, light kept playing around with the Death Note in ways that may have evaded capture but basically allowed L to figure out the rules of the Death Note, and most importantly killed Raye Penber as that was the thing that got L to keep pursuing Light after Lind L. Taylor’s death. Light is somewhat sloppy but conniving. Imagine how much easier it would be if there was a sloppier person.
I think a sequel to this idea, if L could catch Gustavo Fring would be amazing!

This was super fun to listen to. The only reason L had so so much trouble catching Kira is because he was fighting an intangible supernatural force. L would have figured out it was Walt super fast. It would be just a matter of gathering evidence, which is what stopped L from catching Light, the evidence of the magical murder notebook is kinda hard to come by.
L would catch Walt easily. There was a lot of evidence which Hank ignored.

Also, L could literally never go to jail, he’s too respected by every government he works for, so even if he did get evidence illegally, he’d probably get a pardon from the leader of whatever country it is.
L knew Light was Kira all along, he just couldn't prove it. Hank had proof Walt was Heisenberg rubbed in his face the whole time, he just couldn't see it.

It's just that he didn't know that Light had a get out of jail free card in losing his memories by giving up the notebook (which also changed his demeanor/personality somewhat, which made him less of a suspect) If you take away that trump card, Light could deny it all he wants but he's basically fucked at that point.

To think that it took 5 seasons for Hank to finally caught Mr. Clean is beyond me.

The case is too small and too local to elicit any possibility of having an external expert assigned to the case at that point, even Hank's office constantly mocks him for his efforts to take down Heisenberg and even shuts him down when he zeroes in on Gus. It's not until Walter blows up Hector and Gus that it really becomes a big case that could potentially make them call for L's help. If that happened, Walt would be toast within days and he would probably run out of luck very quickly.
Season 5 walt, basically is an international threat, selling drugs to the world at this point, taking down the cartel and controlling their drug operations, have contacts with dangerous gangs,

My opinion is that L could figure Gus and Walter out. Gus would be harder but Hank still managed to figure Gus out even with limited resources. L with his computer skills 100% could. The guy that would be hard for L to figure out is Saul because he was the only one other than Jesse that made it out alive and out of jail for a very long time afterward the BB timeline ended. Saul was known for tampering with evidence and manipulating others to get on his side. I do think L would suspect Saul but Saul would set him up to a dead end each time.

He could easily figure it out from who has the knowledge of chemistry and excess to chemicals in that area. Probably would be like a few minutes of computer research for him and in the worst case a day or two of observation by some agent that works for him.

Yes, easily. The show made a point to demonstrate that Walt was a genius, but also not as smart as he believed he was. Death Note made a point to demonstrate that L was a genius and was also, in fact, exactly as smart as he believed he was
Perfect example of this being all the things Saul has to explain to him, like for example money laundering. Walter seriously thought he could just keeps all his money in the vent forever. Didn't even think about what would to all that money after he died.
It’s kinda funny that both of them kinda have the same here weakness. Both of them have such massive egos that they are able to be beaten by using that ego to gain an advantage against them.

Hank didn't even suspect Walt because he was too close to him, even when there were reasons to, he just stayed oblivious until season 5.
Mike figured all there was to know and even had a good read on just how Walt would turn out, if he had so little trouble finding out who "Heisenberg" was then L would wrap it all up before breakfast. Catching Walt in the act would then be pretty easy imo, having him tailed and busting him during a cook, done and dusted.
He narrowed down Kira's location to a single town in one go, and zeroed in on Light and was certain he was Kira, proving it was the hard part.

@@FreeJalen True, assuming that the case relied on torture derived evidence or other constitutional violations. Most likely L and federal prosecutors would do what law enforcement refers to as parallel construction OR he'd never even work with law enforcement, acting as a rogue actor the wayge sort of did for part of the Kira case.
See, one thing about your constitutional rights is that they mostly only protect you from the government. For example, without a search warrant, the police can't raid your house, wiretap your phones, etc., nor can they torture you, and if they do, then all evidence obtained as a result will be excluded from evidence. This is why overzealous cops can sometimes wreck cases before they get off the ground.
However, if a third party breaks into your house, photographs evidence, or provides a tip to law enforcement, or wiretaps your phones, and then hands over recordings to the cops, all of that is still very much admissible. As long as L and his guys aren't acting as law enforcement, any evidence they illegally obtained can still be used to legally send Walt to prison.
Of course L would then be liable for civil lawsuits and criminal charges, but there's a very good chance that suing him would be nearly impossible because of his anonymity, and the feds would probably refuse to prosecute or even outright pardon him.
The thing is in the Kira case, L is given free reign to do whatever he wants as he has all the governments in the world on his side. For a Heisenburg investigation L would have more traditional limitations. Ultimately he would see that the mask was from Walter's high school and would have a thorough background check done on Walt and would seen that he has the qualifications to be heisenberg. L would also not be there in person. It may seem boring but I am pretty sure that L would just tell Hank to keep an eye on Walt as he is a prime suspect. While Hank would be skeptical of L, as time goes on and more odd things keep happening with Walt, Hank would eventually peice it together. The problem is I don't know how the government ever gets sufficient evidence to warrant a surveillance on Walt over such circumstantial evidence. Maybe the mask is enough? Not sure.
L knew Light was Kira almost immediately, he just couldn't prove it because he was dealing with the supernatural. Seeing as Walter was just a regular dude (however lucky), L would've caught him instantly
I recon it would be very easy since half the reason walt got so far without being sused by hank was because hank (and everybody else) thinks so little of walt that in their mind there's not even a sliver of thought that walt was Heisenberg. especially in the earlier season where walt is very reckless and couple that with Jesse Pinkman as a side kick, yeah this will be over so fast.
I feel like L would have started connecting the dots once he read about Walt's "fugue state." Dissociative fugue is a very rare occurrence, and even rarer for the onset to appear much later in life in an otherwise healthy person. I think he would have at least considered him a possible suspect given how strange it all was. He would also have a reason to take him into questioning since he was guilty of indecent exposure. I think that's how he would start to follow his trail at least, after that L would probably found out in no time.

Even with all the simpathy we have for Hank, he isn't but a common criminal in L's eyes. Even if he decided to take up the case (I don't think he might find it challenging enough), L would never reveal himself to any of the involved people, just as he had done with any case before Kira's.
Dude I'm so glad you made this video! I coincidentally started watching Breaking Bad for the first time immediately after I finished Death Note over a decade ago. I could never get over how similar the dynamic between Walter and Hank was to Light and L's situation.
