Of all the things about this video? I'm happiest about admitting that it's mean to donate trash literally no one else wants even at full retail to a thrift shop. I used to work at a small charity thrift shop and so often people would bring something like a pee-stained mattress (when we had clear signage up about not accepting mattresses, ever, due to bedbug concerns - not even brand new in the plastic ones because if you take one the line blurs immediately) and say "can't you just GIVE it to someone who's too poor for a good one?" when I tried to refuse it because apparently that's what poor people deserve in these peoples' heads.
Agreed, I have to admit I have donated things (nothing as horrendous as something with human liquids attached) that no one would want. I'm sure in the back of my mind I thought it was good enough for them, though I would never have admitted that to myself let alone anyone else. I have since remedied to not do that anymore but I should have been aware earlier. That was a great point on her part for people who may not also be aware of how shit it is to do.

But when the Native Americans killed whites to protect THEIR home/land, they are called barbaric savages! Racism is alive and well, and is enjoying a sanctioned resurgence, thanks to the damage of the devastating Trump years. After everything was ripped away from indigenous people in this country (and so many others) including their dignity, OF COURSE it would be insulting and humiliating for someone with NO knowledge whatsoever of the history and culture of indigenous people, to throw on some costume with feathers and beading and party down, saying, "Look, I'm an Indian!" I'm three years late, but the one note I will make about giving it to Goodwill: while it would be mean to basically want to assume that these horrible costumes are what's good enough for poor kids, it probably shouldn't be overlooked that thrifters and amateur film makers or costume designers regularly go to Goodwill to find shit like this. For those people, you essentially localized the availability of these costumes and probably slashed a couple dollars off the price they have to pay for it and it might be exactly what some random person is looking for... or at least good enough to cut up and modify.
So true. I've put together more than one Ren fest outfit using cannibalized pieces of clothing and accessories from thrift stores. With some sewing knowledge and/or a little creativity, you can make some surprisingly good costumes on the cheap.
Unfortunately, 60-70% of what's donated to thrift stores ends up getting thrown away anyway. It's great to find stuff like this at the thrift store when you can as a buyer, but if there are other sources to donate to (such as a local clothes closet charity or friends), or re-use it for yourself, that's a better step to prevent waste in the first place. Maybe not super relevant for these trashy costumes in particular, but worth keeping in mind in general. TL;DR Thrift stores are great, but maybe research other options to donate to first, if you can.
Yeah, a lot of these costumes are terrible all together but pretty solid as cheap separate parts. Like the teddy bear one could easily be turned into "Teddy Bear Princess" for a younger girl. And I have some ideas for turning the Scorpion King into an actual scorpion costume for a kid, like, the arachnid. (Also, I've seen people donate GOOD costumes to Goodwill ALL THE TIME, or selling them at garage sales for super cheap. So they're out there!)

According to my mum, my first halloween costume idea was to go as an upper case T. The fact she not only did *not* disown me but straight up bought a T-shirt, sewed a T onto it and didn't question it gives me so much respect for this woman. I'm gonna make my kid go through their first Halloween wearing a T-costume just so i have that experience from the POV of an adult.

Honestly, Jenny was kind-of working that vampire costume. The big sagging vest at the front looked bad, but that aside, like have it tightened up a bit so it stays on, keep the cool one-shoulder look, and you've got a not-bad kind-of sexy vampire outfit that doesn't go too far, but that's just my impression.

You laugh, but Plo Koon was and still remains one of my favorite Prequel characters by design alone. And btw, the only reason this guy has a costume is because Dave Filoni is an insane fan of this guy who basically had a combined total of 10 minutes of screentime in the movies, so he made him a semi-important recurring character in the Clone Wars. Dave likes this guy so much, other writers have said they had to stop him from basically making him part of the main cast.

Seems like an appropriate place to leave this story: When avatar came out, I was SUPER into it (keep in mind though that I was nine at the time and should not be held accountable for my tastes). That year I was Natiri for Halloween. Since my mum had to spend too much money for what was essentially a blue catsuit, I had to reuse it the next year. So what else is blue, striped, and has a tail? I ended up getting a massive (Tim Burton) Cheshire Cat mask and re-wore the suit with that. Even though I spent the whole night carting around a comically massive smiling cat face on my head, all night without fail people were like 'are you AVATAR???'

I really liked the artistic choice to have intros for some costumes while they're still in the package, and some hard cuts to you already in the next costume.
I worked at Spirit Halloween and, oh my god, it was the most enjoyable thing just walking the floor and seeing what bullshit we had for sale. I saw the most unbelievable costumes and it was entertaining. Even better was when people bought them/wanted to try them on and I just had to hope they were doing it as a joke.

I worked Halloween at my thrift store job last year and I found the best/worst costume ever: Ghostface from Scream...specifically Scream 4...as a scarecrow...for KIDS. Ghostface never dresses like this in any of the movies. ???!!!!

I just had this extremely vivid memory of my childhood best friend being completely obsessed with the Human Torch from Fantastic Four. He LOVED this character. He wanted to BE this character in real life. So like a year after the movie came out, on Halloween, he came to school in his Human Torch costume and _no one knew who he was_ and he was devastated. Everyone just thought he was on fire. It wasn’t even the most obscure costume in our class. One girl was dressed as Hannah Montana’s evil lookalike cousin, she looked nothing like Miley Cyrus, and more people understood what she was without explanation than my friend who was dressed as The Human Torch.

Of all the things about this video? I'm happiest about admitting that it's mean to donate trash literally no one else wants even at full retail to a thrift shop. I used to work at a small charity thrift shop and so often people would bring something like a pee-stained mattress (when we had clear signage up about not accepting mattresses, ever, due to bedbug concerns - not even brand new in the plastic ones because if you take one the line blurs immediately) and say "can't you just GIVE it to someone who's too poor for a good one?" when I tried to refuse it because apparently that's what poor people deserve in these peoples' heads.

Agreed, I have to admit I have donated things (nothing as horrendous as something with human liquids attached) that no one would want. I'm sure in the back of my mind I thought it was good enough for them, though I would never have admitted that to myself let alone anyone else. I have since remedied to not do that anymore but I should have been aware earlier. That was a great point on her part for people who may not also be aware of how shit it is to do.

I'm three years late, but the one note I will make about giving it to Goodwill: while it would be mean to basically want to assume that these horrible costumes are what's good enough for poor kids, it probably shouldn't be overlooked that thrifters and amateur film makers or costume designers regularly go to Goodwill to find shit like this. For those people, you essentially localized the availability of these costumes and probably slashed a couple dollars off the price they have to pay for it and it might be exactly what some random person is looking for... or at least good enough to cut up and modify.
So true. I've put together more than one Ren fest outfit using cannibalized pieces of clothing and accessories from thrift stores. With some sewing knowledge and/or a little creativity, you can make some surprisingly good costumes on the cheap.
Unfortunately, 60-70% of what's donated to thrift stores ends up getting thrown away anyway. It's great to find stuff like this at the thrift store when you can as a buyer, but if there are other sources to donate to (such as a local clothes closet charity or friends), or re-use it for yourself, that's a better step to prevent waste in the first place. Maybe not super relevant for these trashy costumes in particular, but worth keeping in mind in general.
TL;DR Thrift stores are great, but maybe research other options to donate to first, if you can.
Yeah, a lot of these costumes are terrible all together but pretty solid as cheap separate parts. Like the teddy bear one could easily be turned into "Teddy Bear Princess" for a younger girl. And I have some ideas for turning the Scorpion King into an actual scorpion costume for a kid, like, the arachnid.
(Also, I've seen people donate GOOD costumes to Goodwill ALL THE TIME, or selling them at garage sales for super cheap. So they're out there!)

You laugh, but Plo Koon was and still remains one of my favorite Prequel characters by design alone. And btw, the only reason this guy has a costume is because Dave Filoni is an insane fan of this guy who basically had a combined total of 10 minutes of screentime in the movies, so he made him a semi-important recurring character in the Clone Wars. Dave likes this guy so much, other writers have said they had to stop him from basically making him part of the main cast.

When avatar came out, I was SUPER into it (keep in mind though that I was nine at the time and should not be held accountable for my tastes). That year I was Natiri for Halloween. Since my mum had to spend too much money for what was essentially a blue catsuit, I had to reuse it the next year. So what else is blue, striped, and has a tail? I ended up getting a massive (Tim Burton) Cheshire Cat mask and re-wore the suit with that. Even though I spent the whole night carting around a comically massive smiling cat face on my head, all night without fail people were like 'are you AVATAR???'

I worked at Spirit Halloween and, oh my god, it was the most enjoyable thing just walking the floor and seeing what bullshit we had for sale. Idk why this was recommended to me.. but I enjoyed the commentary. I feel like the spaghetti outfit had to be a situation where, like, the costume designer was under the gun to get out 10 new costumes before Halloween and they looked around the room and then down at their plate, shrugged and made a quick note

I just had this extremely vivid memory of my childhood best friend being completely obsessed with the Human Torch from Fantastic Four. He LOVED this character. He wanted to BE this character in real life. So like a year after the movie came out, on Halloween, he came to school in his Human Torch costume and _no one knew who he was_ and he was devastated. Everyone just thought he was on fire. It wasn’t even the most obscure costume in our class. One girl was dressed as Hannah Montana’s evil lookalike cousin, she looked nothing like Miley Cyrus, and more people understood what she was without explanation than my friend who was dressed as The Human Torch.
