For about 10-15 years Australia made it extremely difficult for skilled workers to move there. It seems like the government are finally realising the impact of that. I guess time will tell to see if the changes will be positive. I wonder what will happen to those that already have visa applications in? Does this mean that they will lose out on the positive changes/possibly put at the back of the queue? Interesting times ahead.

I am officially giving up my 491 visa now, going to apply for 485 visa to replace my 491 visa. Why they keep doing these shitty things to 491 visa holders? I just don't understand the logic. Be nice to people if you want attract them to move to regional areas, do not scare them off. 190 visa holders should be paying more tax since they are living in big cities, and they are PR, they've been enjoying all the perks without any strings attached, while 491 visa holders have to suffer from all kinds of restrictions. Just don't understand their thinkings, what's wrong with these politicians?

Where exactly are all these people going to live with a 1% rental vacancy rate in Australia? High income migrants will push average and lower earning Australian citizens even further out of housing. This is a disaster for Australian citizens.

This will be the biggest shift downwards for the low and middle income families in the last 10 years, this is about suppressing wages growth, we have more that enough people here to fill all the positions.
Businesses just don't want to train people or upskill the workers they have, secondary schools should be far more engaged with businesses students should be doing far more work experience before leaving school. Increase apprentice wages, stop telling teens they all need a uni degree to be successful.
90% percent of jobs advertised list ridiculous expectations for entry level jobs.

For example labouring in construction need to have, white card, traffic management ticket, EWP, C class licence, preferably MR, working at heights ticket, police clearance, experience in construction, all this just to do clean up and assist trades on site.
Some companies want even more senior first aid ticket, must have bobcat, roller, loader, fork lift tickets, A lot of this tickets cost $300 to $500 each some only good for 2 years then you have to pay again.
People in offices and politicians have no idea the hoops you need to jump through. I have been on construction sites where some of these skilled immigrants have no f__ ing idea, they don't speak a word of english even if the do they cannot read any safety instructions.
I have done more training and study over the last 15 years than I did in whole school life. I have spent at least $5000 in required training to be a skilled labourer.
Jim charmer's recently announced that people will need to do more for less but Politicians are except, they don't even need to do a good job.
Every western country that has opened the floodgates on immigration is in crisis, USA, England, Germany, just to name a few. England even dropped out of the EU to stop mas migration to england. People quite often just come to milk the system for heath care and pension in retirement keeping their over seas bank accounts.
Sure the rich will get richer but the poor will get poorer.

Perfect. At a time we have no places to rent or buy due to shortages, let's bring more ppl into the country so we can send them to live on the streets to give company to the evergrowing street population. Great idea.
We are not short of skilled workers. We have ppl tired of being paid little for the work they do hence why every industry is short of workers. There is still a mass world-wide career shift.........ppl are changing jobs and wont stand for a shitty pay.....only the ignorant ones, like immigrants who dont know better will fill the robbery gap. Good on you Australia. You've done it again.
PS. And now as we enter El Nino slowly again and droughts are to rise again, where are we going to get the water from for the extra ppl. During the closure of allowing our own citizens into the country, the govt allowed 150 000 Indians to enter behind the general publics back. That is re 300 000 extra Indians in Australia in 2 years where our own citizens weren't allowed back in. Wait till there is a major water shortage, fewer crops are being harvested, increase in bushfires..and then see how much property is worth. El Nino last what.....7 years on average? Fun times ahead for this country. Thankfully I am leaving it and never to return.

I could tell you that the current education system is just broken. I work for one of the IT giants, australian-born candidates and hires are RARE. Asians and Europeans are FAR better educated.
And it's not a surprise, the current international education does NOT incentivise the education per se: the education system prioritises money, the students are motivated by a PR status. No party is interested in education as such. The results are quite obvious of course.
For local people the education is a very serious investment without any clear returns, as a tradie you can probably make more money anyway. While I truly appreciate the social justice, as a country Australia disincentives the education (hex debt, low entry-level salary), so a common wisdom is that being a tradie is a more secure and more profitable path. But at the same time, I hear there is a shortage apprentices too. What do all those youngsters do?
Another extremely important thing for Australia is almost complete deindustrialisation. We have natural resources, we have agriculture, we have construction. But that's all, at least in terms of producing something tangible. Services economy (nurses, financial sector, etc.) just redistributes the the pre-existing dollars, it doesn't create added value in a traditional industrial way, it doesn't make more of anything tangible. And because of that, Australian dollars are only really backed by the natural resources. While this might be sustainable, it's a resource peripheral role.
Now, to be able to sustain innovative economy, a country needs to have a sustainable level of demand for the innovation. Which means population. We're talking at least 10 times the current population.
Australia also needs to think about security, which means military. Again, even to protect the shore line it needs a population a lower 8 times the current population numbers.
So... The lack of population and the extreme financialisation of the economy are the biggest barriers for Australia to achieve something worth talking about.

    1. Crisis housing is already at crisis level so where are all these migrants supposed to reside?. 2. Australia has already been an intellectual/brain drain on other countries as it is with many Phd, masters students including ones who are not first class honours ones using studying as a pathway to Australian citizenship despite many of them being sponsored by businesses/companies in their home country with the expectation that they will return after the completion of their studies and help build up some of these 2nd and 3rd world countries like Brazil, Vietnam, The Philippines. When is Australia going to support Australian students and not just new students

I am on a 482 medium term from last year November, I was planning to apply for 189/190 this year, is this going to be impossible to do so? What would happen to 482 medium term visa holders like myself? Do we have to work our employer for 4 years whilst people on 482 short term visa holders will get their PR by the end of this year? sure sure, such surface level thinking, the issue isn't a skills shortage, the issue is a lack of affordable, good quality housing. Heaps of jobs here, however how can people move to take up jobs if the housing is unavailable or takes everyone's money to fill the pockets of the greedy. Change the policies to restrict profiteering from the rental market. Cap the number of allowable investment properties. Enforce those with second properties that are lying dormant after 1 year must be leased out at a capped rental rate.

Indeed, the migration reform means migrating to Australia will likely become harder, as government has shown clear intention to use the migration to complement the workforce, rather than inviting lower quality people. Despite all the journey I went through, I have to admit Clare O’Neil is right on current migration bar is too low. Many folks here who got their 189/190/491 grants rely not on skilled work, but on auxiliary attributes (CCL, PY, Regional study), hold an Australian qualification and speak English very well (superior English). That’s not a very high bar to reach, however ridiculous it may sound for people working to get a high score today.
I read the highlights of the report myself, and find that government doesn’t want to get rid of BIIP. This surprises me because investment money is not free money. It’s not like government collecting taxes and generating revenue, plain and simple. Yes, there will be associated taxes on those money but with string attached and demand for return, I don’t know what they are thinking.
Fully support raising student visa bar to ensure graduates will have good job prospects and possibly mandate competent English. Student comes here to study, in a country where official language is English. It would be very difficult to believe that someone who doesn’t speak English at all can survive the Australian education system without massive struggle and/or ongoing support. It is only natural when you come to study in a foreign country, to speak the official language of that foreign country, at least to a degree.
I doubt the reform would entice employers to hire international graduates despite longer 485 visa length, especially in engineering field where a project can easily last some 3 years to upwards of 30 years for mega projects. PR still have great advantage over TR and this is undeniable. I am not saying companies and businesses would not be able to work out this change and give international graduates a chance, but they should provide other incentives as well, such as an even clearer pathway to permanent residency. Also, the middle income cohort will naturally be the biggest in their so-called three tier system. Some of them will be missed out I am sure, and that could be a loss for businesses and Australia.
Overall, this reform proposal clearly demonstrates the governments direction on where they want the system to go, and sadly, it will mean harder migration to Australia. However, it can also mean some migration loopholes can be closed, such as filtering out non-genuine students churning through Labor market for lowest skill jobs, when those jobs should be reserved for fresh graduates (domestic and international) to gain practical work experiences rather than just earning money.
No doubt there will be more information to come, and I will surely read through the complete report.
Looking forward to see Karl breaking the report down and digging deeper into it.

    • @estellebright2579
      @estellebright2579 Рік тому

@@wyattfamily8997 However, the government can still invite people who are onshore and convert them into PR rather than inviting offshore, which many, including Karl, called out some months ago. We don't need more offshore people. What we need is people onshore today. Onshore migrants living in Australia today will not worsen rental crisis. In fact, they are the victims as well.
Regardless, a capped TR program should be the way to go to manage external population increase and put the country in a better position in the future. Even in recent invitation rounds which many considered "migrating to Australia is easier than ever", the government still invites people with high EOI scores and tries to direct people to live in regional Australia as much as possible, showing the determination to invite higher quality people than just populating the country with lower quality migrants.
I welcome some of those changes and believe the government has put some thoughts into this report with sensible solutions for Australia in the coming decades, and I like that approach. Thankfully my personal migration matter is more or less behind me, but I am more than happy to keep an eye on this in the coming years.
