  • "The Untold Legend of the Batman is a three-issue Batman comic book miniseries published by DC Comics in 1980. It was written by Len Wein. The first issue was penciled by John Byrne and inked by Jim Aparo. The second and third issues were drawn entirely by Aparo. José Luis García-López drew the covers for the entire series. The primary plot elements of the story are retellings of the origins of several Batman characters." - (Wikipedia)
When I was a kid, DC released this as a book on tape. I couldn't tell you how many times I read and listened to them. I thought it'd be cool to put it together as kind of a motion comic.

Hi ya'll, this is Scott Canfield -- I'm the composer/producer who wrote, performed and recorded this Batman theme and soundtrack. Joe Raposo Sr. (composer, of Sesame Street fame, and great friend) initiated the project. I lived in "Gotham" i.e. New York City through it all. Joe's son, Joe Jr. and I painstakingly created all sound effects without computers - using only our imaginations. It is rewarding to know that it became a memorable part of so many lives...

hi ya scott. love the batman theme in this. makes me wish you could release the whole soundtrack of this tape in it's original form. The reason for this is because while this soundtrack was meant for a telling of the origin for the silver age Batman, It would also go great with the origin of the Golden Age Batman from the secret origins comic series. Tell me, did you guys ever consider doing something smiler with Superman while or after doing this? I would've loved that, especially since that ever since i listened to this great piece of audio, I've been re watching all 3 parts of this series on UA-cam nearly everyday when i have the time. It's become one of my favourite audio dramas as well as my favourite telling of the Batman Mithos. Props to you and your team for composing this.

georgemiser Superman series was also done around the same time, though it was a much lower quality production. It's referred to as "The Man Of Steel". It's here on UA-cam also. I did some engineering on that series, but the main music was written by Joe Raposo.
      Best, Scott Canfield

Man we have Batman Year One and Batman Zero Year but this has been a hidden treasure of Batman history. I found the trade paperback in Value Village here in Canada and just knowing about the original 3 separate comics as well as the audio cassettes included with it is incredible. I’m glad to have the trade paperback and this is one of the best origin stories of Batman. Man now I’m imagining if Kevin Conroy and the other Batman the animated series cast read this.

I had no idea this was released in an audio format. I first discovered this comic book as a small black and white trade paperback back in 1990. By that time this story was already 10 years old. Bringing back a lot of memories.

Thank you for posting these. I'm 10 years old again. My mom bought all these at Kmart and played them till the tape broke on my Emerson tape/CD player. I kept my paperback and now passed it on to my 8 year old son, who is learning to read on his own, like I did with mine

Comic and song are both amazing. But the sound mixing on the cassette is so off. The sound of dripping water drowns out the voices in the first scene in the Batcave.

1970s/early '80s Batman was always my favourite version of the character and DC, in general. Just broody enough, but still *a masked detective* and not an urban warrior thug, like Frank Miller's version. Yuck.
Still, this is an interesting retelling of events. I was born way after these audio stories were available, so it's great to hear them today.
Oddly enough, the bit at the end with Joe Chill was used in an episode of *Batman: The Brave and the Bold.*
