- In this early silent film the character and world of Little Nemo is created. The artist discusses his drawing with his friends and draws a few while they are present. He then promises to create 4000 pictures to create an animated moving picture by the end of the month. He has a few setbacks when a kid knocks all the pictures over and they have to figure out the order of the pictures again. Eventually he plays the final film for his friends.

No cels. No onion skin/tracing paper. No other animators, just one man, working on thousands of drawings, all by himself. McCay was nothing short of brilliant.

Brilliant or mad ?
25,000 individual drawings...damn
@@yukineswan It was the Fleischer brothers who invented the rotoscope, some years later: a great innovation in animation.
Incorrect. Mccay used thin rice paper and dash marks. Sort of like tracing paper
This must have blown people's minds in 1911. Still blows my mind now!
Even by todays standards.. the animation in here is astounding.
Absolutely
THIS IS OVER A HUNDRED YEARS OLD!!!!!
7:22 the first speedpaint video EVER!
Humorous fases of funny faces (1906)... "Lightning sketches" were in fashion, artists sketching live to phisical audiences, it is how they called "speed painting" back then
McCay was a genius and a pioneer in comics/animation....
My animation teacher made us watch this when I was a freshman in highschool. I was really fascinated by the mostly precise animations, especially with each frame being drawn out induvidually. Amazing piece of work in my opinion.
You're so lucky you had an animation teacher in high school!
BRUH A ANIMATION TEACHER!? THATS HARD TO FIND- DAM U LUCKY BASTARD
This was the first masterpiece of animation: there are earlier films, but this truly showed the world the possibilities of the medium...
What eaerlier films are there?
@@kurvos There was J.S. Blackton's 'Humorous Phases of Funny Faces' (1906), and Emile Cohl's 'Fantasmagorie' (1908); but those are quite primitive, compared to McCay's work.
The animation in here is so amazing and look almost like 3-D models in the way they move this is so impressive
i love this. especially how completely random the “story” is. the animation is incredible
For five decades I've been considering him the master of them all, but yet I had to see how able he was with animstions.
I know! I had seen Gertie the dinosaur but I had never seen this so I never realized it was made by Windsor McCay! I’m ashamed I never put two and two together and I’m absolutely blown away this is incredible!
I know there are much older color film experiments, but let me just say... oh my god IT'S IN COLOR!!!
It was hand colored on the print, using stencils: a not uncommon practice for that time. It is not to be confused with an actual color film process (although some actual experimental color footage from the 1900s has been found).
damn a hundred years old and it still looks great that shot with the dragon walking away from the camera looks better then some stuff made today
I do not have words to describe how awesome this is. Animators today have it easy with tweening, the fill tool and layers. Back then, no cell paper, every drawing by hand
amazing animation for the 1900's . love how smooth the movement is :)
This really deserves more love. I just shared it on my Facebook page so all my fans can appreciate what happened here.
Bravo. I have the Book of "Complete" Little Nemo comic strips, but I never knew of this classic. Thank you.
This animation is before the comics? :0

No
Wow, he was able to execute the third dimension quite well.
McCay's way of fluid animation is amazing here, especially when the bodies of the characters get stretched out.
Sus historietas eran secuencias de la cinematografía, un adelantado. El más grande, un vanguardista , el mejor !!
The old man next to McCay is John Bunny, who with Flora Finch starred in some of the very earliest silent comedies. Well before Roach or Sennett.
I would actually lose my mind if I saw this in 1911
stuff you missed in history class brought me here
9:22 such a smooth motion!
no problem glad you liked it
It’s so cool that we have footage from 1911 of an artist drawing his characters.
Dude, this is pretty great, I love the style
I think my favorite parts were the dragon carriage, and the "drawing paper" packages and "ink" barrel props.
AWESOME, love them classics😀👌👍
his art style feels modern.
this is absolutely fucking amazing. cool people have always existed
So inspiring... Thanks for sharing.

John Bunny appears in the film... if anyone still knows who John Bunny was.

My 12th grade English exam brought me here
hm, what was the question?
En mi opinion la primera animacion a color de la historia hecha por un solo hombre.
Anyone else came here from animation class?
A brilliant artist... I'm guessing the color was hand tinted on film post production?

If this a silent film, why do I hear music?
The film itself is silent, music was performed by an orchestra behind the scenes.
