- What an amazing series Shogun has been so far. This episode really tops it for me. The quiet game that Toranaga has been playing this whole time takes real patience and resilience. And the love he has from his men (Hiromatsu) to take his own life to further the cause is mind bending. Another amazing episode! Also I love Yabushige so much his relationship with John is so sweet.

RIP Hiromatsu, realest man in Japan
Purpose generally gives life value (your time spent on Earth), but the way "life's value" is explored in Shogūn is bone chilling. Toranaga took his cunningness to a whole new level and now somehow everyone seems to know their path forward now.
Broke my heart to see Hiromatsu die, and now I'm even sadder for his granddaughter Fuji (and Buntaro for having to second his father's seppoku) 💔 This show never goes the way you expect, and I'm really enjoying the complexities and relationships! Another great review!
I feel bad for Buntaro having to second his father, but i think that part was essential so he would understand that Toranaga hadn't actually given up.
“To deceive your enemy, you have to deceive your friend first.”
I meannn, I'd choose Buntaro too cuz I know he's got the skill to do it in one strike 🙃 But really I imagine choosing your son is the honorable and correct thing to do. So much subtlety between Hiromatsu and Toranaga in that scene --both in the story and from the actors. Their expressions contradicted their angry words: they seemed to be saying 'farewell old friend' with their eyes.
What they’ve managed to do so incredibly well in this series, is to portray this culture that is so wildly foreign, opaque and incomprehensible to us in the West, and make us understand it. Even in this episode, with the outrageous sacrifice made by Hiromatsu, they somehow managed to make it comprehensible. That is storytelling of the highest order.
I hardly remember anything from watching the 80s series, (I was just a kid), but I do remember that Blackthorne was the undisputed main character, and all the Japanese characters were little more than cardboard figures. (Even though they had the great Toshiro Mifune playing Toranaga). This version is something else altogether. We get to know every single one of them, and in the process we get to understand why they do what they do. They even had us feeling bad for a wife-beater for a while - that takes some serious skill.
I agree that is so hard to do and they have done it perfectly! Thanks for pointing that out
Well put.
From what I've heard the 80s series had no subtitles. The Japanese characters spoke Japanese and it wasn't translated. This put the (non-Japanese-speaking) Western viewers squarely in Blackthorne's POV. It's somewhat interesting as it makes those viewers as lost as him and picking a few things up alongside him but of course it utterly flattens the Japanese characters by erasing their POV.
苦肉计!这就三十六计里典型的苦肉计!这种谋略和诈降有点像,从表面上要让敌人相信是真的,所以心腹必须死!
Bitter meat trick! This is a typical bitter meat tactic among the Thirty-Six Strategies! This strategy is a bit similar to a false surrender. On the surface, the enemy must believe that it is true, so the confidant must die!

@@wooshbait36seriously dude? On this show of all places? Wow.
@@Quzga It’s not proper. The shame of it!
Another amazing reaction Imon ❤❤😁😁.
As always, great episode. Great actors! Outstanding costumes and a very intimate yet heartbreaking scene with Buntaro and Mariko. Poor guy, he never understood her. I felt a bit sorry for him. Well... just a bit.
I feel sorry that Buntaro had to take his father's head off, but that's where my sorrow for him ends.
I died laughing when they revealed the church neighbors 😂 so deserved
Great reaction as usual. Agree with your comments. I believe the irony is that Nobukada's death achieved his desire to win Toranaga's approval. He bought his father the gift of time with his death, even if accidental.
I am so interested to find out Lady Ochiba's plans regarding Toranaga.
Great idea for Toranaga to give the church the land next to Gin's land, when her plan is to improve the life of her courtesans (and become more wealthy besides). I thought the priest was going into shock at that moment.
Toranaga is smart enought to predict some things but what makes him great is the capacity to take some advantage from the unexpected
14:37 "Wow,.so it is all a game". Yes. the name of the game is Crimson Sky
Real rough episode for Buntaro
Super rough for him!
❤
Toranaga is playing chess. Everyone else is playing checkers.
Yep!!
ラストシーンで虎長は
広松と長門を胸に抱いた様に見えた。
Tadanobu Asano who plays Yabushige is such a great actor. He was great in Silence as well when he explains to the missionary how ignorant he is. This role seems like an extension of that. Has great screen presence.
He is awesome! I had no idea he was also in Silence! I will need to rewatch the movie now
@@ImonSnow Will you be reacting to it?
0:38 1000 Ways to Die was on SpikeTV for some reason 🤷🏻♂️
That’s right! Lol I was trying to remember the channel.
The audio level of the video is so low. You're barely audible at certain times.
It seems fine to me.
It's to keep your environment quiet.
