- Yabushige is like a leaf in the wind, he goes wherever the wind blows. This episode of Shogun broke my heart. Mariko finally expressed herself and represented her family name with honor and strength. Her father would have been very proud! Johns love shown so bright this episode. Just all around amazing episode

It's telling the difference between Yabushige and Blackthorne is that Blackthorne refuses to give up no matter how cornered he is.
Mariko did her duty 😭 .... what a wonderful show, I'm spolied now, the level of writing is above the ceiling.
Yabashige has always been about surviving day to day. He took the unstated offer from Ishido to allow the shinobi in to: 1. Kidnap (not kill) Mariko; 2. Kill any Toranaga men in the way and 3. Not harm any noble women
The offer and the order from Ishido was verbal and there were no paper trail. Our favourite sociopath is dead.
@@khaii13the shinobi screwed up so bad that now Ishido is lost. The plan of kidnapping her and letting everyone believe she had left, was a good one. That plan went to hell with her obvious death. Toranaga sent a stick of dynamite to the palace and the idiot Ishido ended up lighting it himself.
@@zimvader25 to put it more accurately, Mariko screwed up the shinobi. Nobody could have ever thought that the VIP they want to capture would get herself blown up, or that they would ignore Yabushige’s suggestion to make a run for the gate.
Time for Yabu to dust off that will 😂

Anna Sawai has a great interview with Colbert on the Late Show. She is as charming IRL as she is as Mariko.
It is interesting that the thousands of years of honor culture is still ingrained to the point that suicide is a problem in Japan still, because of the feeling of dishonor still. Whether not feeling adequate supporting your family, being fired, addiction.
It was all Toranaga's plan: Early on in the series he asks Mariko if she would be interested in him giving her "a way out". She even mentions it to John early on, that Toranaga has given her an opportunity to "right the wrong" done to her. This was apparently what he had in mind - her death will drive a wedge between Ishido and the others that will benefit Toranaga. Two birds, one stone.
Shinobis were not Toranagas plan, but Ishidos. The plan backfired when Mariko sacrificed herself.
@@KristiinaBerg True, the plan was that Mariko die at the hands of Ishido, which is what inadvertantly happened. Mariko improvised in a chaotic situation and managed to force the result both she and Toranaga wanted. Now everyone will turn against Ishido, and Toranaga will emerge as the new king boss.

Great astute,reactions as usual. Anna Sawai - deserves any award to be given for her acting, overall, but especially this episode. I was sorry to see Yabushige make a plan with Ishido- didn’t like Yabushige in the beginning, but gradually liked him better. Now he’s flipped again and betrayed Toranaga and Mariko. He killed his own guards, and then let the ninja in to kidnap Mariko.
Mariko has achieved her purpose - to die in redemption of her fathers name. I think this was the deal made with Toranaga - his permission to commit seppuku. And she did it with the other high born ladies as witnesses. I don’t think an explosion was her plan, but she definitely planned to die at some point.
So many other things and meanings happening in this episode. Shogun will also win awards. One of the best TV miniseries I can remember.

Yobashigei (sp) works for only his best interest at that moment. No one can trust him. He will not fair well with either side. The tapping on the shoulder was the countdown to send in the second wave of ninja's.
MMany of you Crimson Cried. You followed a Crimson Herring. But realized, too late, the truth behind the Crimson Lie: Mariko was the true Crimson Sky.
Despite my criticism in previous episodes about how Mariko the wife continued to handle her domestic affairs, especially after how the truth of as to why she was kept alive has laready been revealed; I do have all the respect in the world for Mariko, the Retainer. She fulfilled her duty and managed to say out loud what every Lord in Osaka was feeling but were too afraid to say. And she was committed to everything to the end.
(Minor Tangent: I am happy the gate scene was not a "girl-power mopping the floor with all those men" moment) Now all of Osaka's Lords are soured against Ishido; and Ochiba might have to put the engagement on hold in order to Mourn Mariko. Her mission is a success.
Speaking of which, it’s so heartwarming and heart breaking that “Leave us” scene between Mariko and Ochiba. I'm Happy Ruri-hime did not just outright hate Mariko for being her father's daughter; but their exchange was so heartbreaking as they both knew each other so well and what the other was doing and them pleading with each other to make the step to end the hostilities, and saying their goodbyes like that... it was made clear: Ochoba was willing to do anything to continue on living, while Mariko was samurai through and through and was trying to convince her that the duty is what is most important. The fact that Ochiba-Sam’s had to turn away to hide her tears and she can’t maintain her mask )9 fold fence) was just Gold. i think I'm sweating through my eyes.
And Blackthorne finally doing the right thing and deciding to Second Mariko, instead of just dismissing all of Japan's customs and cultures as BS , that was the best gift he could have ever given her. So much so that despite my misgivings about Mariko the wife; their last night of intimacy was completely EARNED; despite all your valid concerns which I mostly agree with.🥹🥹🥹
And thankfully, Ishido stepped in, because Blackthorne was already shown as not capable of properly wielding that sword.
Yabushige's betrayal was to Kidnap Mariko AND not lay a hand on any of the VIPs (it was shown on screen that Shizu and Kiri was not killed when the shinobi identified them in their sleep). They need to make it look like some bandits or assassins got to her while she was sneaking off in the evening despite getting her permits: that was why the shinobi did not kill her right away, but rather were trying to take her away. Mariko became aware of this right away and chose where to meet her end: she did not go to the gate where she would get captured as Yabushige intended. Having grown up there with Ochiba, she knew what would happen when she chose to hole up in the store house.
Ambition is truly a poisonous fruit.
John sought it and look what he got.
His comrades from the ship hate him. The Portuguese is as strong as ever. His loved one like Mariko died and most importantly, he’s stuck in this strange land and can never go back home which made him automatically losing his two kids.
The only person who benefits from John’s ambition is Toranaga, and yet his victory is still hollow because while he’s one top, he’s totally alone.

"Crimson Sky" was never a military invasion of Osaka. As the name of this episode makes clear, *Mariko was the Crimson Sky*. She was left alive just for this. A 14-year plan.

Imon talks about that a little in the episode description of season 3 episode 6. She loves Supernatural, I'm sure it made her sad to pause the reactions to it.
In the episode description Imon said that she had learned so much from Supernatural that will help her in her own personal life, I hope it has. It's one of those series that does a great job of dealing with pain.

Either that or death. Unlike legacy of samurai honor to fight for, he had none. Unless Yabushige truly had no options, like being stuck below the cliffs, he may have taken his own life. Some may argue he was cowardly, which may be true, the dude risked his own life braving the vertical cliff so as to not lose face in front of his men. Complicated internal struggle of honor and survival.
