      Mariko has been against marriage since day one. She said that the alliance with the Toda clan was worthless (ep. 6). When Ochiba reminded he that her father (Akechi Jinsai) loved her very much, she said "then he should have married me better". Buntaro showed her compassion yet she threw everything back to his face. I am pretty sure over the years that could make him bitter. I am not saying Mariko deserved the way she was treated but it goes both ways.

    • @satwikroy1989
      @satwikroy1989 2 місяці тому +1

      @@pangkaji the marriage was a mutual dislike for each other. Mariko despised the Toda clan and Buntaro held grudge against her that her father was a traitor. The series does its best to explain their complicated relationship over the course of the 10 episodes but Buntaro gets a lot of unnecessary hate from the audience. Not saying that hitting his wife was warranted in any way, but there's a reason why the two ended up in the situation they were in. Kind of reminds me of Bill Burr's "No reason to hit a woman" stand up bit.

    Basically Toranaga is pretending to be weak sick defeated and have no will to fight post his sons death. The problem is that Toranaga is known for being crafty and always having a plan up his sleeve so his allies don’t believe he’s finished and keep waiting for his plan or his trick to get out of this situation and win. If his allies believe he’s faking it and has a plan up his sleeve than of course so do the spies flip floppers like Yabushige and his enemies so they won’t have their guard down and keep watching for anything suspicious until he’s dead. So In order to fully deceive his enemies he must first deceive his allies and it’s the death of his closest friend and ally Hiromatsu dying while failing to stop Toranaga from surrendering that makes everyone believe he’s truly given up, after that you see Yabushige the crafty one always trying to play on the winning side want to leave Toranaga which is how he knows the trick has worked on everyone.

    • @frmthefuture
      @frmthefuture 4 місяці тому +5

      this is the correct answer.
      toranaga originally got sick on purpose and was going to use his "illness" as the ploy. but when his son died, he had to adapt. hiromatsu figured out what tornaga was actually doing, during their back and forth. it was the final way for him to be useful to his lord and oldest friend. with hiromatsu's act, everything then proceeded as toranaga had originally intended.

    Hiromatsu called an audible, the original plan was for the disloyal generals to commit sepuku, Hiromatsu took an opportunity to save them and still show Osaka that Toronaga had "given up", notice the look they give each other just before Hiromatsu says " so you do believe in a pointless death"

    This episode is the heaviest yet can't wait to see EP9 - CRIMSON SKY!
    25:39 When the shows Underscores certain text it means a substantial detail. Recall way back in EP1 "Anjin", Hiromatsu shares that Usami's (Fuji San's husband, the one that gave the outburst & spoke out of line) was reckless to which Toranaga replies "No - he does not approve of all this pointless death." He is held hostage but doing so will not give a reason the armies of 4 regents to wage war against one..which is fruitless death.
    Then, in EP6 "ladies of the willow world" Hiromatsu suggested to put into action ' Crimson Sky ' with Omi San adding that "they still have time" and to risk it and rush in with an attack. His last line was "find me a plan that isn't certain death" - there will be NO CRIMSON SKY.
    Lastly & faithfully - after all the facade that has been building up about his health, Hiromatsu says " So you *do* believe in pointless death". Essential the lie was bought in blood and his friend made the sacrifice to make it believable.

Every sacrifice made holds incredible weight for him as shown in the last scene where he vows over the ashes of his dead family to make sure their deaths were not in vain.

    13:44 "I struggle to remember". Mariko has been dishonest to Buntaro from the beginning. Her father married her off to the Toda clan to save her. However, in Ep. 6 she said to Ochiba "The alliance with the Toda clan is worthless". When Ochiba said that her father loves her very much, her response was "Then he should have married me better". She has been against the marriage (and him) since day one. I am not saying she deserved to get abused. Think about it from Buntaro's side. He has shown compassion yet she throws everything back to his face. Over time I can see how he became bitter

    • @rzrshrk7883
      @rzrshrk7883 4 місяці тому +2

      Well it’s based on the book and this episode was quite different but episode 9 is pretty true to the original story.
      In the book, Mariko is down for the suicide pact but Buntaro says they have to fulfil their duty.
      Nagakado doesn’t die, but it’s hard to film the actual story there because it’s mostly stalling and politicking.
      Hiromatsu doesn’t die but two others do. However, that wouldn’t have any emotional impact on the show audience because we don’t know those characters.
      I can see why they went this way. It’s more visual than the direction the book goes from the meeting with Toranaga’s brother.
