I GOT TESLAS FSD BETA | Honest First Drive Impressions

- Yesterday while on a phone call in San Bruno, FSD Beta 10.12.2 installed itself to my 2020 Model Y Performance. Because I have multiple Teslas that I share on Turo, I didn't expect to qualify for the Beta in any of my cars until a wide release. Anyway, because I am impatient and always want to capture these experiences for you, I strapped my phone to the open armrest and turned on the Beta! Now, other than riding as a passenger in my friend's vehicles a couple times since the first Beta launch, this is literally my first ever experience being behind the wheel of a Tesla driving itself with the FSD Beta. Overall, I was impressed, as you can see from the video, I questioned the timing of some of the lane changes but the car managed to get me from a parking lot in San Bruno to Tower Car Wash in San Francisco without any safety concerns or disengagements.
Yes, I know the video is a bit raw compared to our usual productions but I really wanted to document this first experience as honestly as possible and have it as a memory and as a milestone to see how the software improves over time.

When you drive on higways Autopilot kicks in, there's no FSD on highways
Yeah I was just going to say this. The Highways = Navigate on Autopilot (NoA), City Streets/ Non-Highways = FSD Beta, they are still in two stacks, hopefully we get single stack sometime soon.
Would be nice to see what's happening in front of car. Point of view is no good on this one.
Agreed, I just parked the phone on the open armrest, not ideal but I decided to get my first impressions as they came in rather than chasing perfection this time
Please keep your hands (both) on the wheel mate, specially if it's your first time using the software and going at 60Mph changing lanes like crazy.
Interesting levels of trust with that left hand steering of yours.. Wish u luck :)
On hwy its still the old Autopilot stack
Thanks for the vid. Can you reposition the camera so the road can be seen also?
Yes. That would add a lot of value. Now we miss the driver view.
You scared the living sh!t out of me going trough that airport. It is ok to disengage and take over ANY time the car is doing something out of the ordinary or unsafe. Please be responsible with the beta. In fact, I believe disengagements are sent to Tesla for analyzing.
love this video... coz you were getting me nervous....
Yea as others have said, FSD Beta is not enabled on interstates. Any road that previously used Navigate on Autopilot will continue using it, meaning you will need to confirm lane changes. Easiest way to whether you’re on beta or navigate on autopilot is to just look at the visualization and if it looks like the old one then you’re just on regular old navigate on autopilot that’s available to everyone with the FSD package.
At 20:25 this is still AP, then it switches to FSD Beta. That's why freeway performance is unchanged. Elon has said that FSD Beta is only streets, highway AP will be replaced in upcoming builds.
Did it turn off 1 second before impact?
Ok so you need to know that when you are on the highway the car is still using the highway navigate on autopilot stack and you have to wiggle the wheel for it to do a lane change
I’ve noticed on several of these various FSD videos that the drivers never hit the camera icon to report problems to Tesla. I think that’s a key feedback mechanism. I doubt the Tesla engineers surf UA-cam all day to gather feedback.
Even though I don’t think it really goes anywhere. I’ve mashed this thing hundreds of times for the same issues and the same issues have never been resolved.
On highway it's still just Nav on Autopilot, not FSD, and you have lane change confirm on for NOA, so you didn't notice it asking you to confirm the lane change at the 11 minute mark. You still have to confirm highway lane change if you have that turned on.
Is this the latest fsd beta?
Well... I guess if nothing else, we know how it is to ride along while we're slouched way down in the seat 😜
I did 2 weeks from now but still waiting
Very good review and FSD beta is impressive. But I am not sure it would be in L4 in next 2 years.
Correct. Bad camera placement.
It's easier to change lanes in a curve in the road when you have eyes in the back and sides of your head.
I need to get a newer Tesla to get in on this...looks like it was pulling off pretty aggressively but overall pretty good! Funny about the aggressive taxi driver comparison - idk about Cali, but NYC is full of those aggressive taxi drivers 🤣😭 it should fit right in, right? Lol
How long tesla active for FSD bete?
Is it safe detecting motorcycles and scooters on the road. I’m a rider and kind of worried.
I hope that you don’t try driving in San Francisco. I live in Silverview Terrace, not too far from you. Our driving score is low just from driving down Newhall, a very steep hill. It gives us aggressive braking, even though it’s all regenerative braking.
How many of your cars did you pay FSD beta for?
+1 for having the steering "wheel" instead of this other thing
Please mount a camera on the glass roof next time; we can’t see anything at that angle. Otherwise good input.
i dont know for sure but i think fsd beta isnt activated on highways, or is it?
thats why you had to confirm lanechanges
It’s not.
It's a lot of money at $12k. Do you feel it's worth it?
tbh you were quite quick inteveining at the first error in the parking lot..but as we cant see the road, i cant really rate this
2:43 interesting freeze. i hope this was just the animation not the computer
Ryan, we cant see anything on the road dude 🤣🤣🤣
Please disable FSD when renting out vehicles. I heard you talk to Elon about people experiencing FSD would be beneficial and you said "car sharing!", as if to say random people should be able to test FSD. That is not safe or within the rules you agreed to when accepting FSD. I am not trying to be critical, but I found that comment concerning. Thank you.
Car monitor in video is a bit too high. Needs some adjustment for viewers to see more of the road.
We can't see the road
Isn’t there an option to not have to confirm lane changes ?
Yes but it makes really stupid decisions. Wants to change when a car is in blind spot but doesn’t when there is a perfect opportunity
If the goal was to make sure that no one understands what's happening, a better spot next time would be to put the camera into the trunk ;)
on highway there is no fsd beta
Next time enable full screen
I wanted to cameras to help show what was happening around the car though
How do you actually do that?
11:15 is Autopilot not FSD 🤦♂
dude put the camera in a place we can see the road. wow
I like the video, I think that it still has room for improvements I wouldn't have given the computer that much control which seems a bit dangerous. I think that it is way too aggressive for regular streets and that this needs to be gauged down a bit. I think that it will stay in beta I don't see it going any further than this. My reason is it needs to be road-ready and the city roads in this country aren't there yet. I think in time we could but we have been saying we will have flying cars since the 50s. Cool feature and would be fun to play with but not on everyday driving. You did great doing things though. I would have moved the camera a little so we could see the road.
Uh... Have you seen videos from 1 year ago? 6months ago? 3 months ago? The rate of improvement is insane! Yet you think they've suddenly hit a wall and this is as good as it will get? What would make you say that? They've got the next version hardware (version 4) coming out next year, working on version 5 already, working on high resulution radar to augment the higher resolution cameras that will be on the vehicles next year, etc. The pace of development is in high gear with the pedal to the metal! And you think it's stalled? 😅
@@truhartwood3170 Lol so many people just blurt out 'it's not gonna get any better' without giving any explanation whatsoever - they just have a 'hunch' lmfao.
Strange people.
hehe
Can I have one of your teslas
Stopping in the middle of the hwy and taking you through an airport is "good"? The conclusion doesn't fit the informative video. Most of what was "good" was autopilot, not FSD. Thanks for risking yourself to train the system so I don't have to.
My first impressions are that you shouldn’t have done this drive using FSD. Any driver whether on FSD or not should learn how the car operates before starting the journey. The fact that you weren’t aware that FSD switched to autopilot when on highways is a basic. Why were you only using using your left hand to change speed and operate the screen without having your hands on the wheel. You stated that your foot was over the brakes pedal, it wasn’t. Not sure what others think watching this but I believe that you are an irresponsible FSD user who made me nervous. POV was awful as well. Sorry nothing really positive to add.
You know you like it when "she" is aggressive....
no offense but this is the worst point of view i've ever seen in an FSD beta video
