It's not about being an ad as such and about wanting to raise money, but the product placement is ill placed and comes super obvious plus out of the blue. That's just plain cheap and deceiving. I want to decide on my own whether I want to watch an ad or not. It should have been made clear from the start, it would have been no big deal. Btw, Microsoft is a very rich company and if it were only a call for social responsibility for raising money, there would be no need to cover the software as much. It would be enough to say: 'The used software Microsoft Note and the institutions x, y and z call out for your help, contributions and donations.' There would still have been a little product placement/honourable mention. But like this it feels like the social responsibility factor is only a minor side kick.

Is this an endorsement for Microsoft OneNote? Yes. Does that matter? Not really. The point of this video is the use of technology to improve the lives of others. I personally don't like Microsoft gaining advertising exposure for commercial gain from my non-commercial licensed Flexy-Hand that is on the end of this arm, but I guess that's my problem and nobody else's.
Sam Medley, Steve Wood is the one who designed the Flexy-Hand. Ivan Owen is the "...inventor of the first 3D printable prosthetic hand." mentioned in the video. It is important that they get credit for their work. :) And it only would've taken a few extra words added to that sentence to do so.

the trouble with prosthetics that some people dont realize is that EVERY, SINGLE, ONE, of them has to be custom designed to fit the recipient. its not like clothes where it just has to kind of fit. not everyone has the same body size or the same amount of missing limb. the ability to quickly make custom designs with 3d printers is surely what will solve this problem. in a few decades all you will hav to do is get your nerves mapped out and body measured then in 6-8 business weeks youll hav a limb.
thing is the hand would be like padronized but i get it thing is,the amount of ppl that need these arms is not AWFULLY big so thats not so much of a problem with proper funding and dedication even if it takes 20 years to get every single person who needs an arm to get one
Although if they have atleast 1 arm that one can be scanned to make the prosthetic fit as well as possible. If not then they can go by proportions. We aren't quite at the point where we can easily do it but further research will make a huge difference for a lot of kids someday.
It's because it's sponsored by Microsoft. People feel that it's meant as an advertisement for Microsoft by using something noble like allowing one armed kids to have a second, and working, arm.
TheSecretman82 so what? must one lose to help others gain? ms is gaining and helping the deprived gain as well. this kind of advertisement should be encourage instead of pornographied ads.
"We don't feel like people should profit from a child without an arm" I have my arms and legs but still I really want to say thank you when hearing this statement. our world needs more good people~ thank you~~~~
I've seen a few vids about Albert and his team, and the work they are doing to make prosthetics more easily available to the kids that need them, and I've literally been moved to tears by what they are doing. Albert and co., keep doing what you are doing. You are all amazing. Best wishes x
no sense your comment, but as i can see, the corp of Winchows had manipulated your mind too--- look around, search a little, research a little about all the investigation there have been done, it's not a Win idea o monopoly. Try to join some group, but please, don't buy Winchows marketing lies..please
Christopher Young You mean a sponsorship so veritasium can keep making vids?? OH GOD NO!!! how aweful... it was a whole what, 4 seconds of the video... I think the awareness raised more than makes up for it. I wasn't aware that so many children are born without limbs or full limbs. No one whines when it's audible doing the sponsorship.
Christopher Young And I wouldn't exactly call it an ad so much a a call for talented people to help work on this project and to help more kids. It wasn't saying "Go buy the new blah blah blah."
Christopher Young matbe, they realy like microsoft and wanted to say that, also they need the money so its realy good that microsoft is giving money to such a good couse.
The master of all its acceptable when they do it right and dont stomp it on your face :) but its funny how they try to hide it so you dont notice it :b
The ending hug was nice. The kid is mature for his age. Which is Always the case for people who go through hardships. And probably those arms will help them find a part of what a normal childhood should be. It is important to understand how to allow them to have a childhood nevertheless. I don't know what does childhood mean and never will, and it will always make me think"maybe that's why" in specific social situations.
Faith in humanity restored This kind of action gives me hope for the future, maybe one day human won't live for profit anymore, but will live life as such This video brought a tear to my eyes, I just hope that economics people won't try to benefit from this, which will not happen..
***** History shows governments get replaced once the greed and corruption starts making the people suffer beyond what the military can handle. Democracy, communism, monarchy, republic, dictatorships, doesn't matter, all governments will fall eventually after they stop working for the people and only work for themselves. No government is immune to this. The US has it's own problems, the free market corporations have bought politicians, compared to communist countries where politicians just dip their hands into the communal pot directly.
Don't be so naive and gullible. If these people were given absolute power, they would without a second thought cut off everyone's arm just so they can make more prosthetic arms. There is no good in humanity. None.
Damn...it really chokes me up when I hear the kid at 4:23. To think hugging with two hands is that important to him it really does mean a lot. I feel for that kid and hope he gets to achieve all that he rightfully desires.
There is this high school grad who designed and built a prosthetic arm that is connected to 12 channels in the brain and can use articulated movements. And it is really cheap. I'm happy to see young adults trying to push the prosthetic industry forward. It hits me right in the feels.
"We don't think that anyone should profit off a kid who is missing an arm." That quote right there restored a little hope in humanity. It is amazing what can be accomplished when people stop being so damn greedy.
I'd prefer you grow up a bit and realize what it takes to make these things possible. Good god, so many people still holding mommy's hand and demanding cookies...
illitero I have no problem that he's made a video that's sponsored by Microsoft. I am saying I'd prefer to know that it's sponsored before watching it. Zeke Aeloen I think that you misunderstand the situation. This isn't a matter of watching the explanation that Microsoft sponsored the ad. It's a matter of not knowing it's an advertisement until the end of a 7 minute video.
Gotta be honest, I don't think they've solved a problem that others couldn't, I think they've just made a cheapo version of the real thing, and it's not even an advancement in anything, big deal, they are getting on the 3D printing hype train 5 years late. Like, it's fine for giving kids confidence and it's clearly a good thing as it makes them happy, but it looks like you could fall and all of the fingers would just break into pieces, and the demo of it gripping was on an empty water bottle? Is that all it can grasp and lift? Or was that just all they had at the time to demo it to the millions that could see this video? The real problem is the robotic arms that cost 50 grand only cost so much because of the research and development that goes in to them, and there is no infrastructure in place to manufacture them on a large scale. And the companies that are making these arms aren't looking to sell them on a large scale, instead they are just constantly making new versions and improving, and there is nothing special about them mechanically, the physical materials and technology are going to be pretty cheap. So if we want people to have well built functioning arms then somebody needs to push the development of bionic arms and get them down to a reasonable price, and while it's great for these kids, in the big picture making a barely functional cheapo version out of plastic is like putting a plaster on a knife wound.
Can all of the people complaining about Microsoft just stop? Does the fact that they're sponsored really affect what they're doing? Actually it does. It _helps_ what they're doing. The video is good, what they're doing is good, so I don't know why them getting funded by Microsoft is something to be mad about.
how grateful it is, we are really lucky to live around those amazing people (i just got in high school, i kind of what to try something like this when i go to university, try to use what i've learned to make the world a better place:)
.. I so wish we lived in a world where people do, nothing BUT help one another in such an amazing way! Thanks guys! You make the world a better place, for people who deserve everything positive in their lives... children!
The little guy got another 3d printed bionic arm a few months ago. It was designed to look like Iron Man's arm and it was given to him by Robert Downey Jr. in character as Tony Stark. I know it was probably just a publicity stunt for the actor, but hell - the kid was born without an arm and now he's Iron Man. How awsome is that?
This feels a lot like I'm being advertised to. I checked the description and apparently it's a sponsored video? This tech is amazing, but the video is still giving me this skeevy vibe.
( ͡° ͜c ͡° ) Cool insult, dude. The advertisement kicked in at about 5 minutes through the video. How would he not watch it when the only indication is "thanks to Microsoft" in the description?
Matheu Campbell I was a bit put of because I thought the deal was that youtubers should say that at the beginning of the video. I don't have a problem with sponsored videos but it just threw me off a little bit.
SilverEye What do you mean? Derek always places the ads at the end of the video. That's how its been for a while. Sure this time they mentioned it within the content, but they do actually use it.
To all you haters about the Microsoft Product placement... These videos require funding, they are not free, and he's not paying for them out of pocket . Lastly it still a accomplishes a great goal of spreading awareness, so take your childish troll attitude and GTFO.
you do realize some of these kids will have the knowhow to make mods for these arms..... like sling shots or nerf dart launchers.... or just straight up have a retractable knife on it in the future lol
notStevenBird if you don't understand that simple line of high school level printed English than I feel sorry for your parents for having raised you XD
Who could dislike this, you are the cruel people of world who destroy peoples dreams. Im very greatful happy see smiles child and adult have new proposed arm or leg they receive. Skys the limit maybe one day science will be joke so people dont have look down on others, world is one being itself so treat her as you do to yourself not hard.
the world is vast large sphere everything takes one step start something, that creates another step eventually we call that walking gradually that turns to running. Humans brain needs constant want and need discover and learn every person givin that will. so you dont have get upset cause you want just sit not learn.
+Nathan Chen From what I've heard from people who have lost them, you still feel the limb that was removed, as the brain doesn't recognise that the nerve simply 'ends' so it imagines feeling in the limb that's no longer there.
Ok. This is the one thing I have seen on the internet that has restored my hope in humanity. Most of the stuff we hear about is esoteric development that has no future outside of a lab, within a human lifespan anyway, or all of the things that we are doing to destroy our world for our great-great-grandchildren. Thank you so much Veritasium for showing this to the world... we kind of needed it.
This makes me unbelievably happy, and proud of humanity, and proud of the downtrodden for their strength and proud of creators for their altruism and just, proud of what it means to be human.
Totally should've asked a the end of the video, "What do you have to say to the people that think you're limited because of the way you were born?" and then one of the kids should've flipped off the camera with his prosthesis. The ideas you get at midnight man, I should really be sleeping right now.
I think it is awesome that the other kids didn't bully him, but actually think he is cool... this can be a great deal for the kid accepting himself as part of society and deal better with his situation.
It's sort of interesting how he keeps touching his stump (is stump the correct term these days? Probably not, huh?). I don't know why I find it interesting, but, well, there it is. On another note, I remember seeing some sort of video about bebionic prosthetic limbs, which use a similar method to control the hand (muscles on upper arm to open and close hand) and at the time I wondered why nobody had done it before or done it cheaper. I'm assuming the answer to the latter has something to do with patents.
Stefano Pastre I am an amputee also (right leg) and am also finishing my degree to be licensed in this field. I was just giving him the "academically" correct term. I call it a leg and arm too! It's weird to think or talk of it as anything else :)
Scientifically speaking, fully functional, articulate, and enhanced prosthetic limbs like the ones in Deus Ex are entirely possible. In fact, we could probably do it now. Unfortunately, at the moment, they would likely cost millions, possibly even billions of dollars for all of the intricate parts and surgery that would need to go into developing one quickly.
ashley osborne no, it will happen in our lifetime. If we can already do this much it's easily going to happen in our life time. Technology is moving faster than you think.
Yes, it will one day be possible (for reasonable pricing). And to say that it won't happen in our lifetime is limiting thinking. We won't get anywhere in the world if we just think the generations beyond ours will do it instead of us.
Those kids are tough. I can't imagine what life would be like without being able to even play video games. Those things are part of what made me. I feel so touched.
+Oliver Johansson Personal 3D printing is expensive, but if a company or a university have access to them, they end up being cheaper then having to order specific items/parts.
Ben RK Dude it's not a Microsoft owned company - it's sponsored by Microsoft. I think it's a great thing that they're helping these student led projects to better the world, who cares if their reasoning is PR? Still makes a difference.
"How dare Microsoft sponsor a project that produces cheap prosthetic limbs to kids! Now I have to listen to a short snip of information about a product I don't care about!" No one likes ads, but they are required for projects like this. UA-cam wouldn't be where it is now without ads. Same as this project, they're accepting advice, funding through donations etc... but the real money will come from this sponsor, which will help them develop cheap prosthetic limbs for kids.
Wow, honestly people. If it were any other company sponsoring this project and funding the stuff these guys are trying to achieve here, would you guys be so butthurt about it? Microsoft has got the money and the power to do something about this problem, yet you are too shortsighted to notice that they are actually HELPING. This video actually restored my hope in humanity a bit. Until i read the comment section... Yup, we're screwed...
My alma mater. I was super proud UCF was in national news for this. Having one of the largest student body it's not like they need the advertisement. But UCF has one of the best engineering programs in the country. With top notch internships and recruitments: Siemen, Lockheed, Northrop, NASA, Disney and Universal.
Even simple hugs , high-five , shake hand , can be someone's dream which we never take seriously.... Don't complain for not having something and be thankful for what you have.
"we don't feel like people should profit from children without an arm" - wonderful, however, the profit motive of gaining & maintaining a differential advantage others needs to be retired, it is an inefficient way to distribute resources, erodes collaborative efficiency & produces excessive concentrations of wealth. We are faced with what to replace capitalism with in the context of a technological post scarcity society. The best proposed socioeconomic system I'm aware of today is a "Resource Based Economy"
the video game kid was amazing! he wants to be able to play video games! but also hug someone with both arms! that's sweet and amazing and i hope that it comes true and we keep up the advancements!
MonkeyFace yes its a great arm and it works great for the purpose of being a placeholder until he's older and can get a nice one, but he has no control besides close and open.
Could the bionic arm be adapted to understand different signals? Like the signal from one muscle to open it and another to close it? That could help make it easier to use and a lot closer to a real arm :)
+Gamal Trinidad Kabil Lol yeah, it's so easy to do that, just double the sensors. There's probably like a million other problems, it's not as easy as "doubling the sensors"
I'm not an expert in this kind of things lol. Just it seems like there're no other problems in the way. Probably I'm wrong but... Just what I think that may be the solution
They say they want to be able to give children limbs for FREE. Those people aren't millionaires, they have to be able to pay their stuff in some way...
Revanth Boom Boom "they want money so they can do it for free" Hey, rethink that statement for a second. They want to get paid so they don't have to get paid, eh? They want people to give them cash, so they don't have to ask people to give them cash. That's what you're saying. The former people may be different people from the latter, but all in all, that doesn't sound very well-spirited at all.
Nawid N. They're not getting paid, the money goes towards the project itself. It's an alternative to fundraising you know? The engineers need money themselves to live, but they also need money to fund the project. By "do it for free", they meant as in providing it for free. Revanth worded his comment poorly.
That is such a shitty perspective. Kickstarter has a huge marketing base to promote something so good. This is about reducing the cost by getting the word out!
A good back-story to help small teams produce low-cost prosthetics. Good filming of the basic technical approach (without being too complex) and good user-interviews!
OK this is awesome, I love how they aren't try to hide that it's a prosthetic, and that there just rocking it. I mean if i saw a kid in my school with one of these, I would want to be his friend! And the fact that they can get custom ones is so cool. If I got one it would be a termanator arm or if possible an arm that has wolverine claws!
*Windows:* Develops programs that help create innovations that change peoples lives. *Mac:* Busts the wallets of parents of self-obsessed teenagers with little to no computer knowledge.
why making these arms for kids with missing limbs if you can also fix the problem when they are still in there mother. then place some stam cells and they make a fully functional arm... is that possible?
they would use stem cells and such other things but first they would need the stem cells and the only way they could get a mass of stem cells is from an unborn baby. but thats where genetic modification could help instead, but there is alot of controversy over if its morally right to gm humane
+Jamie Cooper Actually this is a common misconception regarding the source of stem cells. Stem cells can be cultured. Understanding technology and spreading knowledge is a big part of human culture. Unfortunately there are a lot of people against the topic because they don't understand the technology and spread incorrect information. This benefits no one. Stem cell research is very important to humanities future and people should know it's not all about taking cells from dead babies. Support stem cell research because it might save you or a loved ones life. There is nothing immoral about saving lives. It's ironic that I notice many people speaking out against stem cell research are often the same people against abortion. Their goal is to save lives but because of their misunderstanding they try to suppress a technology that has the potential to save a huge amount of lives. Let alone improve many of lives.
thank you for making this video because this video made a lot of people understand that it's not what the persons like on the outside it's how they are on the inside as in being kind! I'm a kid and in the future, I want to help create 3d printed prosthetic limbs to help children!
Wtf people everyone's complaining about an ad at the end of the video when they need the money to give kids free prosthetic arms, wow

thing is the hand would be like padronized but i get it thing is,the amount of ppl that need these arms is not AWFULLY big so thats not so much of a problem with proper funding and dedication even if it takes 20 years to get every single person who needs an arm to get one
Zd📌📍
Although if they have atleast 1 arm that one can be scanned to make the prosthetic fit as well as possible. If not then they can go by proportions. We aren't quite at the point where we can easily do it but further research will make a huge difference for a lot of kids someday.
Adjustable straps. Simple design. Baby steps. Not everything has to be so fine-tuned to be effective.
Well, clothes used to be custom fitted too, by a professional called a tailor, which is mostly gone now. It's a matter of scale too.
Why would anyone dislike this? If someone dislikes this, that implies that they're against making 3-D printed arms that are sponsored by Microsoft.
Or they just like hitting the dislike button, idk.
Some people like getting the first dislike, like me.

"We don't feel like people should profit from a child without an arm"
I have my arms and legs but still I really want to say thank you when hearing this statement.
our world needs more good people~ thank you~~~~
And we need more funding for this technology
I've seen a few vids about Albert and his team, and the work they are doing to make prosthetics more easily available to the kids that need them, and I've literally been moved to tears by what they are doing.
Albert and co., keep doing what you are doing. You are all amazing. Best wishes x
600 people don't like 3D printers and kids having arms
I know right
+Madison robson thats what i thought too
no sense your comment, but as i can see, the corp of Winchows had manipulated your mind too---
look around, search a little, research a little about all the investigation there have been done, it's not a Win idea o monopoly. Try to join some group, but please, don't buy Winchows marketing lies..please
That's terrible
So is my Dick. It never get used anymore.
What kind of sick broken people thumbs downed this?!?! For shame...
Christopher Young Well boohoo
Christopher Young You mean a sponsorship so veritasium can keep making vids?? OH GOD NO!!! how aweful... it was a whole what, 4 seconds of the video... I think the awareness raised more than makes up for it. I wasn't aware that so many children are born without limbs or full limbs. No one whines when it's audible doing the sponsorship.
Christopher Young And I wouldn't exactly call it an ad so much a a call for talented people to help work on this project and to help more kids. It wasn't saying "Go buy the new blah blah blah."
Christopher Young
matbe, they realy like microsoft and wanted to say that, also they need the money so its realy good that microsoft is giving money to such a good couse.
Charlotte Burnside apply cold water to burned area
Yeah... Nice Microsoft Productplacement...
Good cause though.
As the guy said though , they need funding yo...It's pretty understandable.
The master of all its acceptable when they do it right and dont stomp it on your face :) but its funny how they try to hide it so you dont notice it :b
5:44 "We don't feel like people should profit from a child without an arm"
Grow up.
ye naice that you live without money so you dont need advertisement amiright????
7:07 what an amazing young gentleman.
It’s been seven years and I haven’t heard of anybody else getting that kind of arm. Why not?
The ending hug was nice. The kid is mature for his age. Which is Always the case for people who go through hardships. And probably those arms will help them find a part of what a normal childhood should be.
It is important to understand how to allow them to have a childhood nevertheless.
I don't know what does childhood mean and never will, and it will always make me think"maybe that's why" in specific social situations.
These guys are Real Heroes.... Just Unbelievable And Amazing!
I though u said Unbelievable and *un*amazing
Probably the most useful youtube channel. Great work, Derek.
Greetings from India :)
Faith in humanity restored
This kind of action gives me hope for the future, maybe one day human won't live for profit anymore, but will live life as such
This video brought a tear to my eyes, I just hope that economics people won't try to benefit from this, which will not happen..
Don't worry, that faith will be shattered in a million peaces soon enough if you keep reading the comments for to long.
zetsumeinaito wolf-pac.com
Microsucks is already profiting from this.
Well, that's handy.
haha i see wat u did there lel
Omg *facepalm*
What do you mean...
+Charles Benjamin 'HANDy' Like hand? You know? mmmm nvm..

"I don't feel like people should profit from a child that doesn't have an arm." dem words don made mi cry.
"We don't think that anyone should profit off a kid who is missing an arm." That quote right there restored a little hope in humanity. It is amazing what can be accomplished when people stop being so damn greedy.
I'd prefer a comment at the start of this sort of video saying that it's sponsored by Microsoft.
Agree! Why not being upfront? Would have been no big deal and shed a better light on the video content.
I'd prefer you grow up a bit and realize what it takes to make these things possible. Good god, so many people still holding mommy's hand and demanding cookies...
what is the problem with microsoft?
*sigh*
illitero I have no problem that he's made a video that's sponsored by Microsoft.
Great products of today, like the iPhone, tablets, cars and whatever, did not just fall from the sky, it took time to evolve.
Revanth Boom Boom amen.
Um, they are solving a problem. They're solving the problem of it being too expensive to give kids arms...
they need time to grow... just because it cant be imidiate product we should give up on it? wtf
Yeah I don't the point. Why don't the kids just get the already existing 100 thousand dollar version?
Dude, at the end of the video, he says it's sponsored. And that's not a bad thing.
SilverEye Fair enough.
"We don't feel like people should profit off a kid with no arm." That is one of the most amazing things I ever heard
4:28 I want to hug with two hands
Me: me too,kid.
Nice hidden Microsoft commercial.
Don't think we didn't notice...
yeaa soooo secret

Microsoft is sponsoring them, that ad helps fund this project.

+Felix Hu iron man design. yeah.
guns on those arms?
+mr. Whitaker transforming knife on that arm?
you do realize some of these kids will have the knowhow to make mods for these arms..... like sling shots or nerf dart launchers.... or just straight up have a retractable knife on it in the future lol

It's really heart warming to know that people are doing such good things in the world with new tech. :D
I know a team of 3 students from ASU who did the same thing last year... It's amazing what technology enables us to create
Or we disliked underhanded native advertising.
the world is vast large sphere everything takes one step start something, that creates another step eventually we call that walking gradually that turns to running. Humans brain needs constant want and need discover and learn every person givin that will. so you dont have get upset cause you want just sit not learn.
I don't understand why people dislike this honestly
I actually want to know what if feels like to have a little stub for an arm. Or what the stub feels like.
+Seiko Shinohara just kidding
+Seiko Shinohara 😂😂
Just become a powerpuff girl. Works every time
+Herny Chen yea! Duh but how would it grow back.
This makes me unbelievably happy, and proud of humanity, and proud of the downtrodden for their strength and proud of creators for their altruism and just, proud of what it means to be human.
who the freak thumbs down a project like this??
They probably liked the video so much they turned there phone upside down and liked it

+Special Ed Student there was a bionic arm prosthetic in Advanced Warfare
hahaha 😂
Totally should've asked a the end of the video, "What do you have to say to the people that think you're limited because of the way you were born?" and then one of the kids should've flipped off the camera with his prosthesis. The ideas you get at midnight man, I should really be sleeping right now.
Smokey wtf ur supposed to be stopping fires
When the kid said he was exited to hug with two arms, I cried
I think it is awesome that the other kids didn't bully him, but actually think he is cool... this can be a great deal for the kid accepting himself as part of society and deal better with his situation.
hahaHAHAHA some help me cut my arm off
ME TOO LMAO (FOR PEOPLE THAT DONT KNOW WHAT LMAO MEANS IT MEANS LAUGHING MY ASS OFF
It's sort of interesting how he keeps touching his stump (is stump the correct term these days? Probably not, huh?).
I don't know why I find it interesting, but, well, there it is.
On another note, I remember seeing some sort of video about bebionic prosthetic limbs, which use a similar method to control the hand (muscles on upper arm to open and close hand) and at the time I wondered why nobody had done it before or done it cheaper. I'm assuming the answer to the latter has something to do with patents.
***** Thank you.
+Bob Woggle The correct term is "residual limb"
+ukrainianbeauty19 I don't have a hand, and I personally prefer calling it a hand, or arm, depending on the situation.
Stefano Pastre I am an amputee also (right leg) and am also finishing my degree to be licensed in this field. I was just giving him the "academically" correct term. I call it a leg and arm too! It's weird to think or talk of it as anything else :)
Is Deus Ex one day possible? That we can fully control the mechanical limbs
It already is
ashley osborne no, it will happen in our lifetime. If we can already do this much it's easily going to happen in our life time. Technology is moving faster than you think.
You mean duce sex? Like when you take a dump on a girls chest? That is possible actually
7:05 I love him! ❤️ I wanna give him a hug too!
First time I've heard someone say that 3D printing is cheap
imagine, paying 200$ for just 10-100 meters of plastic
+Oliver Johansson Personal 3D printing is expensive, but if a company or a university have access to them, they end up being cheaper then having to order specific items/parts.
My school has a 3D printer we have to pay for the materials but u get to do some awesome things.
Well like compared to the 40.000$ price! :o
+Oliver Johansson It's cheaper to use an existing 3D printer rather than a specialized machine that can only mold one thing.
Yay Microsoft ad... Way to ruin an awesome thing.
I agreed with you, but I thought about it and notice that they said that they need more funding. So this ad is nessecary that awesome thing.
Sure, but from Microsoft? I wouldn't trust Microsoft with this...
Ben RK why not??? Bill Gates has donated more than $26 billion dollars to philanthropic causes. And have don a lot in order to helping people in need
I really want one of these
Do you really only have one hams or is this some kind of sick joke?
DUUUDEEE, retroo, remember me from your old server? Cvaldes? Miss the crap out of you
Be happy with the limbs you got. Or sat least wait to when the arms are fully functional like a real arm. And theeeen amputate your arm. Simple.
Ryan The Blah dude i have 1 limb im pretty sure i qualify for one of these
OneHandedWarrior | The One-Handed PvPer It's like even with the heavy hint in your comment, they still make assumptions.
01:07 WHAT ARE TOESSS!!!!!
Toes are limbs on your feet
+Okay its a refrence to: What are those!!!???
Ik but i was making a joke
oh sorry
+scapegoat981 I hate your profile picture
"we don't feel like people should profit from children without an arm" - wonderful, however, the profit motive of gaining & maintaining a differential advantage others needs to be retired, it is an inefficient way to distribute resources, erodes collaborative efficiency & produces excessive concentrations of wealth.
We are faced with what to replace capitalism with in the context of a technological post scarcity society. The best proposed socioeconomic system I'm aware of today is a "Resource Based Economy"
How is Resource Based Economy a replacement for capitalism?
a bit too far in thinking, aren'tcha
This is the kind of stuff that gets me excited for college. Making a difference in the world. Creating things to help people out
I don't even mind the OneNote product placement, because that software really does rock.

the video game kid was amazing! he wants to be able to play video games! but also hug someone with both arms! that's sweet and amazing and i hope that it comes true and we keep up the advancements!
poor kid wants to play video games with it
MonkeyFace yes its a great arm and it works great for the purpose of being a placeholder until he's older and can get a nice one, but he has no control besides close and open.

Imagine printing that in all sorts of cool colors and stuffs. Amazing! Revolutionary!
Could the bionic arm be adapted to understand different signals? Like the signal from one muscle to open it and another to close it? That could help make it easier to use and a lot closer to a real arm :)
I know that technology for this has already been created, but I don't think it's cheap
+deWaardt its just doubling the sensors. Not much more expensive.
"We don't think people should profit from a child without an arm" slap bang in the middle of a *HUGE* Micro$oft advert, not good, not good at all ;^
They say they want to be able to give children limbs for FREE.
Those people aren't millionaires, they have to be able to pay their stuff in some way...
your comment is stupid, they are not trying to profit off of children, they want money so they can do it for free, hence the ad placement.
do you think this would be possible if microsoft didnt sponsor it? what is the big deal with having an ad at the end?
Revanth Boom Boom "they want money so they can do it for free"
Hey, rethink that statement for a second.
Have these guys made use of kickstarter.com???
nah, kickstarter is for projects that benefit the creators wallet, not humanity
That is such a shitty perspective. Kickstarter has a huge marketing base to promote something so good. This is about reducing the cost by getting the word out!
Preach!

So true
why making these arms for kids with missing limbs if you can also fix the problem when they are still in there mother. then place some stam cells and they make a fully functional arm... is that possible?
+Quenten Schoonderwoerd that's only a half of the kids without limbs. There's also those who got theirs bitten off by sharks or diabetes or something.
fetus modifications is extremely illegal
they would use stem cells and such other things but first they would need the stem cells and the only way they could get a mass of stem cells is from an unborn baby. but thats where genetic modification could help instead, but there is alot of controversy over if its morally right to gm humane
Let alone improve many of lives.
he won't be able to play videos games :(
We'll get there. There are controllers made for peeps like this though :p
I have one and i can Play most of the video games right now

soon hopefully

thank you for making this video because this video made a lot of people understand that it's not what the persons like on the outside it's how they are on the inside as in being kind! I'm a kid and in the future, I want to help create 3d printed prosthetic limbs to help children!
