The tour boat captain should lose his USCG Captain's licence permanently. Those divers are very lucky that the sailboat came by. It is very hard to see people floating in the water. I was out sailing one day and noticed a windsurfer who was having trouble with his rig. I headed for him and got a long rescue line prepared. Just as I got within 100 feet of him, a jet ski came up and took him back to shore. I think the guy on the jet ski was in radio contact, but couldn't locate him. When I drew near he had a reference point. Later, whenever I sailed in that area the wind surfers would come by and wave. I guess I was some kind of hero to them. It's a sailors duty to come to the assistance of anyone that requires it, without hesitation.

Happened to us at Portlock. We jumped in from shore and quickly realized the current was faster than we could swim, especially with scuba tanks on. We had no choice but to dive to the ocean floor and crawl our way back to the rocky shore. We were only in 30ft of water but we all burned thru all our air when we finally reached land. That also happened to us at that little beach next to the blowhole. We could not see the current till its too late both times. By the way, if this happened in portlock next to Hawaii Kai,. it was due to the tide dropping in the bay.
While scuba diving off Hawaii Kai back in 1982, a sudden squall had hit when I surfaced with my dive buddy. The swells were so large that we could not see the boat or land. We guessed what direction the tour boat may be and swam in that direction. After about 20 minutes of swimming, we found the boat.
Wow .....first why didn't any of these divers have a marker buoy ( big "rookie" mistake ) ???? Something is really wrong when they were 2 hours overdue and no call to the CG by the dive boat Captain .....really fishy
Many of those action activity tours seem pretty scary. They all tell you they're the best but this one was not! Let's hope he or she can never operate a tour again!
How were there no calls for help from the tour boat? Pretty sure that crew won’t be getting tipped. Also, you can unhook your main sheet from the traveler and the downhaul and use the the boom as a makeshift crane. The main has a pretty significant mechanical advantage system that can easily lift a swimmer out of the water. I’d remove their tanks and weights obviously before doing that but keep the BCD on just in case.
I had a similar experience in the Virgin Islands, after diving for a while we went up to where the boat was, and it was gone. The boat captain spied it quite a ways away and most everyone swam for it. This was my first time diving and I was very tired, so I waited for the boat to come to me. It was a scary experience. but we went out the next day and dove again.

Sad, but I can understand how boat captains can lose their divers at the surface in rough condition. However, if they had a Divemaster go down with them, and if they were using a Dive line (at least the anchor line) for diving and surfacing, how did they get so far away from the Dive boat? We lookied into diving with Aaron's, but they didn't meet our schedule. My wife and I SCUBA dived that same area with "Reef Pirates" in August 2023. We were not only on a boat with just 2 other divers (one awesome young many service our country in the Army and originally from San Antonio), one scheduled diver failed to show-up (not including the Dive Master and the Boat Captain), and 1 of those were repeat customer. I wasn't very impressed with their reefs, wrecks, and overall Sea life (I dive, boat, fish, lobster, and spearfish the Florida with the family most years since 1992), but the visibility was impressive (even better than Crystal River). I was looking for Lobster (catch and release), when we had a very large (6'+ long) Sea turtle (not a Leatherback, maybe Loggerhead) come out of the blue from the west (I watched the entire approach). While my wife was facing away and viewing the remains of a wreck, myself and the 3 (including the Dive Master) other divers watched the turtle come above (within a foot), stop, and hover over my wife. For an extended period of time it just floated there, without my wife's knowledge. When my wife turned around to check on everyone else (all of us were watching her), she slightly elevated, and gently collided with the turtle. She was startled, and the turtle, continued East and back into the blue (really blue water). My only complaint is that I have 2 GoPro Hero cameras, and both of them stopped recording, and didn't capture this "once in a lifetime event". Great location for Novice divers, with the right organization. There is very deep water, rough conditions, and strong currents in the area, but the water is very clean.
