One of the most annoying things about Warhammer 40k after entering the fandom is that whenever there's an idea that sounds cool, people who are super into the lore are like "well that's impossible because of all these reasons.." which is funny because GW itself even says that "Everything is canon, but not everything is true". Plus the idea of people being like "a space marine can't join the Tau because they're so brainwashed" feels like its ignoring a big element of...The Heretic Astartes chapters. Or groups like The Fallen who while they're renegade Space Marines aren't all chaotic evil.

I've always loved the idea of the Tau but never thought they have been used to their fullest potential. The image of the Tau i always got when i first started the hobby and when Tau were reasonably new was a young empire, which had colonised many planets and absorbed its inhabitants into a vastly unique and varied army. It also because of this growing size and growing strength in diversity, it was well on the way to taking on the Imperium. Like how the Imperium over took the Eldar, one day the Tau will overtake the Imperium. And in 2020 when the Imperium feels far too strong for its own good and no heretic or xenos army truly feels strong enough to take them on, now is the time they need to update the Tau and truly make it the future of 40k. I'd love to see some more tau empire races join the fold and i think these would work well as a brute sized, heavy weapon team, not too dissimilar to the Imperial Guard Ogryns. A tau unit that is the same size and bulk to a primaris. I'd also love to see sniper units (as the sniper drones feel a little too lifeless) and master swordsmen, like a futuristic samurai. And again these should be different races to the Tau, but they should have the same aesthetic to allow them all to tie together.
Awesome job! I've personally always loved how starkly different the Tau are to the rest of the factions in 40K. I think it makes the universe more believably organic to have a faction so radically different from the rest. The Tau could use a bit more model variety though. Probably more Kroot and other aliens in their empire would help, along with some unique units for the Farsight Enclave. But I do LOVE the idea of Astartes signing up with the Empire because they're still allowed to worship the Emperor. So much potential for interesting story there.

Frankly, I disagree. Imperial and Chaos aside, most factions in 40k aren’t gothic, so it’s not fair to call out the Tau for this. Tyranids aren’t gothic, they’re biological Horrors. Orks are scrapyard junkers. Necrons have an insectoid, inscrutable form. Eldar are sleek and smooth, like you’d expect from 80s sci fi. Dark eldar are more Goth than Gothic. Tau have a futuristic, more modern Sci Fi design.
Ever since the Primaris dropped, most of their minis, especially the ones in Phobos armour, have gotten a more tacti-cool look, what with the patches, hi-tech gear and shit. The Gothic influence is still there though.
T'au were an afterthought and were introduced for newbies who didn't have enough personality to like one of the more specific factions. They put a blank futuristic look that could work in ANY sci fi universe on a miniature faction that if you didn't like you could just ignore. A race that kinda look like human with cool looking armor that would appeal to the rest of the sci fi universes. Their fight style has a more conservative take and requires players less courage, so it's more accesible. You just sit on your ass, waiting for enemies to come, instead of taking risks. I don't know about you but all of this screams "safe bet" rather than "strong personality" faction. That's why it grinds so much with the style of the rest of the universe.
My favorite group in the Imperium is the Cadian Guardsmen because of their less gothic and more Sci-fi look. I never really was interested in the Gothic elements.
Brothers of the Raven Guard, I have spotted multiple units of Heretic Astartes whilst scouting the area surrounding the Tau Empire. It would seem that they have been equipped with their armour and wargear in addition to having been converted to their cause. This can pose a very real threat to the Chapter and by extension, the Imperium of Man, when combined with their Farsight regiment, robbing us of our melee advantage in the greater war. Our current mission objective by orders of Chapter Master Kayvaan Shrike: Eliminate the Tau Marines by any and all means. High level Librarians will be joining us on this operation. May Corax guide our blades and the Emperor protect us, in victory or death.

And while they're technologically advanced, a single Hive City is more than enough to cripple their economy. Even though they have battle suits, a single warband is enough to decimate them all. For all their technological might, they can be snuffed out easily if enough attention is brought to them. And it doesn't help the fact that they want the galaxy to notice them as they further expand their borders. A young fish swimming about, excited to see the wonders of the ocean, unbeknownst to it that the ocean is filled with hungry sharks. That's grimdark as heck.

An advanced race is kinda a dumb argument to make as the Necrons and Elder are a very advanced race even if they have more grim dark aspects they are still fialry technologically advanced. I remember seeing this concept art a while back and loving it, and now I have a good idea on how to moc some up myself! As a suggestion for an alternate head though, the primaris inflitrators if flattened out would look very close to the original, at least I find, still your conversions came out great and I'm looking orward to seeing more!
I would love to see more Tau Converted Ops that are known to happen with-in the lore. This project would probably look amazing with some 3D printed Heads though.
I do have to say, I fell in love with Tau because they are completely out of bounds in warhammer. It sets them apart for me in such a cool way. A naive faction that will soon see what the universe has to offer.

Ever since I first saw this I wanted to thank you for bringing light to the concept, one of my first heavily customised mini's is in fact a T'au aligned Marine and I couldn't be more proud of it. Sure he's a more bulky Primaris unit but I was able to make it work. Again thank you so much

I have a idea somehow similar: knowing some imperium worlds pass to the "tau faction", I was thinking about retrofitting a leman russ with some tau weapons and colors scheme...
That's similar to an idea that I've been working on (well, thinking about). Where I'd build an army with the concept if it being "lost" Tau soldiers trying to find their way home in a hostile galaxy, and over time have incorporated stranded Imperial Guardsmen, and somehow even a few Orks as well
"There's not a lot of space for variation" in the army who's fluff is absolutely loaded with stories of constant new prototypes weapons, tanks, suits, and numerous alien subspecies inducted into the empire? Or the Farsight Enclaves who said "screw the ethereals" and went even further? You really didn't look into them very well before all this. Spend an hour or so browsing Advanced Tau Tactica's modeling forums and you'll see what I mean
in the impossible future of the emperor returning, and freeing the tau from the eternals, siding with them for a true greater good, a galaxy reigned not by mystic but by science and logic
Its a great start. Headcanon: The Tau started experimenting with Space Marine armor designs a few centuries ago. It seems to work much better for close in combat, but Tau inexperience with melee combat has them still hanging back as much as possible. But these new suits , and time and training, the Tau are much less vulnerable if the enemy manages to get too close. They are much better able to fight back in close and even hand-to-hand combat. The Tau do find the the Imperium gets really aggravated to see what appear to be space marines fighting for the Tau. Through some clever use of information control, the Imperium was ultimately convinced that the suits only looks like Astartes Power Armor but were neither Space Marines or similarly augmented Tau. This grand show of Tau technological prowess and ability to advance and grow still worries many in the IoM.
my theory has always been when they were designing the Tau the suits were meant to be weathered to hell, dirty, beaten, but the chap doing the painting was tired of the grimdark and took inspiration from the tau propaganda posters instead of the design doc headcannon baybeee good kitbash btw
So I had some plans to make salamander drake riders, I got the drakes fine, but when I got the primaris marines I was going to use, realized their poses were all wrong, and their size was too big. I didn’t know what to do with them, then I remembered this video, so instead I decided to make them Tau. It’s gone well, I gave them drone parts for their back packs, one has got a shield drone lower half as it’s backpack, one has a drone missile launcher on his back, and one has a marker light turret I have set up like a predator shoulder cannon. I gave them some crisis suit shoulder pads, because my crisis suits poses made it too hard to put them on, and some left over crisis suit and path finder weapons.
Well if it's any consolation at this point I would say T'au is far more fitting for the universe then any of the Primaris, both model and fluff-wise. But awesome conversion non the less!
I know this video is about 11mouths old but just wanted to say this and some others tau marine conversion videos inspired to try do 31 battle suit/mech design all taking some inspiration from aspects of the tau empire
maybe the helmets found on the space marine pilots would be a good fit ? they've always had quite a different look whilst being unmistakably Astartes, and they're not seen much due to the confinement within the cockpit

I feel the primaries infiltrators would be better, they have the same torso arm and leg design and have a pretty angular and tau looking helmet in my opinion
Id like to think these are either some prototype Battlesuits made using marine armor, or space marines who joined the Tau empire because they see it as the best choice of humanity if it wants to survive (because be honest with me, the imperium kind of fucking sucks)

The point of the tau IS that they aren’t gothic. They are outsiders who represent a naive optimism, un burdened by a bloody past. They fit the setting BECAUSE they don’t fit.
Oh yes. Also there are aspects that make the Tau fit in the 40k universe believe it or not non Tau fans. The Tau may seem like some cool ass alternative to the other races in the galaxy but they are bassically a failed alternative that while may be better then the Imperium in some aspects is still fairly cruel and more desolate in others then most factions in others. They may seem at first glance that they don't fit within the 40k universe at first and aren't as gothic or grim dark but once you get into the lore you'll start to say otherwise. But even as a Tau fan the Tau do generally feel out of place in the 40l universe compared the others so I can understand guys. Also fuck the dark Elder.
Dude that primer you are using is garbege. It looks like your models are made of sand papir. Get a primer thats intented for minitures you pretty much destroyed the model with that primer.. Other then that great conversion.

Check out El_Mutanto on Thingiverse or Cults 3D, they made 3D Models based on the same artwork and would be a hell of a lot cheaper to make as a large scale army.

the gyrostabalizers in Tau guns actually make this possible for regular people, so a space marine could probably use a pulse rifle like a big iron

Gothic look my come out of the space marines/Chao marines being the major plays in lore and games and also most of the armies are from the imperium

As a suggestion for an alternate head though, the primaris inflitrators if flattened out would look very close to the original, at least I find, still your conversions came out great and I'm looking orward to seeing more!

I would love to see more Tau Converted Ops that are known to happen with-in the lore. This project would probably look amazing with some 3D printed Heads though.

I do have to say, I fell in love with Tau because they are completely out of bounds in warhammer. It sets them apart for me in such a cool way. A naive faction that will soon see what the universe has to offer.
Besides the lore aspect of the tau, they have great kitbashing potential, all these auxiliaries and whatnot.
Finally I've found this video again! Ever since I first saw this I wanted to thank you for bringing light to the concept, one of my first heavily customised mini's is in fact a T'au aligned Marine and I couldn't be more proud of it. Sure he's a more bulky Primaris unit but I was able to make it work. Again thank you so much

I made something like this when I was a kid and people at the local hobby shop hated it and made fun of me so its cool to see someone so much more skilled making what I tried to as a kid
I have a idea somehow similar: knowing some imperium worlds pass to the "tau faction", I was thinking about retrofitting a leman russ with some tau weapons and colors scheme...
That's similar to an idea that I've been working on (well, thinking about). Where I'd build an army with the concept if it being "lost" Tau soldiers trying to find their way home in a hostile galaxy, and over time have incorporated stranded Imperial Guardsmen, and somehow even a few Orks as well
i actually like the tau. the idea of a relatively "pure" and "nice" faction in such a dark universe is kinda depressing in its own way.

You really didn't look into them very well before all this. Spend an hour or so browsing Advanced Tau Tactica's modeling forums and you'll see what I mean

Ive always been wondering and dreaming of this concept, and im so glad youve materialized it
Its a great start.
Headcanon: The Tau started experimenting with Space Marine armor designs a few centuries ago. It seems to work much better for close in combat, but Tau inexperience with melee combat has them still hanging back as much as possible. But these new suits , and time and training, the Tau are much less vulnerable if the enemy manages to get too close. They are much better able to fight back in close and even hand-to-hand combat.
The Tau do find the the Imperium gets really aggravated to see what appear to be space marines fighting for the Tau. Through some clever use of information control, the Imperium was ultimately convinced that the suits only looks like Astartes Power Armor but were neither Space Marines or similarly augmented Tau. This grand show of Tau technological prowess and ability to advance and grow still worries many in the IoM.

my theory has always been when they were designing the Tau the suits were meant to be weathered to hell, dirty, beaten, but the chap doing the painting was tired of the grimdark and took inspiration from the tau propaganda posters instead of the design doc

So I had some plans to make salamander drake riders, I got the drakes fine, but when I got the primaris marines I was going to use, realized their poses were all wrong, and their size was too big. I didn’t know what to do with them, then I remembered this video, so instead I decided to make them Tau. It’s gone well, I gave them drone parts for their back packs, one has got a shield drone lower half as it’s backpack, one has a drone missile launcher on his back, and one has a marker light turret I have set up like a predator shoulder cannon. I gave them some crisis suit shoulder pads, because my crisis suits poses made it too hard to put them on, and some left over crisis suit and path finder weapons.

Well if it's any consolation at this point I would say T'au is far more fitting for the universe then any of the Primaris, both model and fluff-wise. But awesome conversion non the less!

When I first started to get into 40K, I out a marine head on an eldar body.
I know this video is about 11mouths old but just wanted to say this and some others tau marine conversion videos inspired to try do 31 battle suit/mech design all taking some inspiration from aspects of the tau empire
maybe the helmets found on the space marine pilots would be a good fit ? they've always had quite a different look whilst being unmistakably Astartes, and they're not seen much due to the confinement within the cockpit

I feel the primaries infiltrators would be better, they have the same torso arm and leg design and have a pretty angular and tau looking helmet in my opinion
Ik I’m being picky but just some knowledge a squad is 8-13 soldiers a fire team 3-5 that is a fire team not a squad
Id like to think these are either some prototype Battlesuits made using marine armor, or space marines who joined the Tau empire because they see it as the best choice of humanity if it wants to survive (because be honest with me, the imperium kind of fucking sucks)

I actually don't play, so I'm not sure? While I was making them I was thinking of them as being able to cloak, so stealth suits might also work.
The point of the tau IS that they aren’t gothic. They are outsiders who represent a naive optimism, un burdened by a bloody past. They fit the setting BECAUSE they don’t fit.

Oh yes. Also there are aspects that make the Tau fit in the 40k universe believe it or not non Tau fans. The Tau may seem like some cool ass alternative to the other races in the galaxy but they are bassically a failed alternative that while may be better then the Imperium in some aspects is still fairly cruel and more desolate in others then most factions in others. They may seem at first glance that they don't fit within the 40k universe at first and aren't as gothic or grim dark but once you get into the lore you'll start to say otherwise. But even as a Tau fan the Tau do generally feel out of place in the 40l universe compared the others so I can understand guys. Also fuck the dark Elder.

Dude that primer you are using is garbege. It looks like your models are made of sand papir. Get a primer thats intented for minitures you pretty much destroyed the model with that primer.. Other then that great conversion.
Okay but only some parts of the imperium and sometimes chaos are gothic. None of the other Xenos are gothic like at all so saying they’re bad for not being gothic is just complete bs

Check out El_Mutanto on Thingiverse or Cults 3D, they made 3D Models based on the same artwork and would be a hell of a lot cheaper to make as a large scale army.
