  • We finally got some Vivobarefoot minimalist trail running shoes to try out. Brian reviews the Primus Trail Knit FG after testing it out on the varied and rugged trails in Colorado. He'd been wanting to try these custom-like shoes for years, see the result. Apologies for some wind noise, a hazard of reviewing in the field instead of some office space. At least you know we used them!

I tried the Xero Scrambler Low and it was a bit too narrow for me around the metatarsal heads / 'feet knuckles' and didn't allow my toes to splay as much as I'd like. From your review, the toe box seems wider so that's good, but do you think the midfoot area around the metatarsal heads is also wider?
Also, what did you think about the Knits compared to other Vivo trailrunners? I've heard some people say the Knits feel slightly wider than the other Primus Trail versions (which might just be a result of a stretchier upper).

I think the shoes have a similar width around the base of the toes. Holding up the two shoes, they are nearly a match. The Vivobarefoot has more room at the front of the toes.
Altra has the roomiest shoes I've tried if you've never tried those.
