R2-D2 is one of the essential heroes of Star Wars. But on the other end of the spectrum is an unsung hero: R5-D4. Some droids are naturally programmed to be brave, and others have to earn it through facing the uncertain and stepping up in the biggest moments. This is the story of R5-D4.

I've recently been wondering if R2D2 deliberately did something to sabotage R5D4's motivator.

It would make sense, he knew he wouldn’t be able to accomplish his mission if he got stuck with the Jawas so he had to make sure Luke purchased him. Good theory!

I heard in a non-canon source that the Force itself blew out R5's motivator because R2 needed to go to the Lars farm.

​@@theCinemaHaus"In Skippy - the Jedi droid" R5 is, well, Skippy, a force sensitive driod who learns about R2's mission and uses the force to deliberatly blow itself up. Back then, every grain of sand on Tatooine had an epic backstory. There even was a story in which some dude used Greedo's corpse to create a special cocktail for Jabba.
