Relatively early in her career, an interviewer asked Miss Streisand why, at the end of a song, she very often holds the final note for so long. She replied, “Because I can.”
I am an OLD fan of Barbra and it strikes me that your explanation of the not-breathing moments is REALLY IMPORTANT. I now think what you are pointing out is close to the essence of what makes Barbra totally unique and totally original as a singer. I doubt that anyone else could sing the way she did in these numbers. And now I know just how critical is breath control and specifically NOT breathing at certain transitions. Thank you, Seth! This is brilliant.
Love your vids Seth!!! They seriously make my day :-) btw in before the parade passes by, Barbra holds the last note for about 13 seconds there too!! awesome
If she wasn't so astonishingly fabulous, I'd make Patti stand in holy water and sing that. It's unnatural that she is AS GOOD AS EVER. Ladies and gentlemen - God given fabulousness.
Amazing, all of them!! I have to add one that takes MY breath away every time...Liza at the very end of 'Maybe this Time'/Cabaret. She doesn't take a breath in between the big finish before "win". Nobody does it like her!!!
Stephanie Kane Evidently takes after her mother in that respect. The "show-stopper" segment at the end of Judy's show in the 60's always ended with a phenomenal note. Have you seen Judy sing "Hey Look Me Over" - She just doesn't breathe during the chorus.
Can we just talk about Eden in this weird little production of Joseph? 2:22, she just holds the C and keeps going, never breathes and goes for the G. How!? Perfection. Eden Espinosa - A Pharaoh Story
Seth, please deconstruct Babs in Yentl. It's one of my most favorite scores and it's sung by the greatest singer ever. I want you to obsess over it like I do. =)
No one, but no one, has ever sung With One Look like Patti Lupone. It's as if the song was written for her. When he first wrote it, ALW said it needs a combination of Liza Minnelli, Kiri TeKanewa and Sarah Brightman = Patti.
Totally agree! Rebecca Luker is flawless in that song, and the rest of the show too for that matter. For example the song 'How Could I Know'?? Ahmaazing!! Gets me every single time. Extremely underrated score as far as I'm concerned. Both Rebecca Luker and Mandy Patinkin are superb.
Lupone - that’s a song she owns … but I still feel Barbra “stole it “ and just made it magical , especially on the end You should compare the 2 versions Just saying Great video You and your partner are terrific on the video collaboratives
I know you've only deconstructed one pop song. But you should deconstruct sia's live performance of chandelier on Ellen the belted Es and Fs along with the gorgeous cracks you should check it out!
Patti’s last note of ME suffers from not breathing. Both in the recording and the live version. Don’t hate me, I saw her do sunset on the west end during the whole drama about Glenn close doing it on broadway and Barbra singing The songs from sunset first
Relatively early in her career, an interviewer asked Miss Streisand why, at the end of a song, she very often holds the final note for so long. She replied, “Because I can.”
Please do more of these! I miss them and love them!
Bernadette is so amazing. I was so lucky to see her (2ND ROW, IN FRONT OF HER!!!) in February. I couldn't stop smiling. Ugh, best concert ever.
YAY! I miss these deconstructions, these ladies are some of my faves :)
I recently discovered your channel.
You're so good in what you do.
Great job. Love it.

Omg! You always kill me. You’re so funny and amazing at one time.....with no breath. ☺️
Glad you're back with the deconstructions. I used to watch them religiously and was bummed when you stopped. So happy now!!!!!
I've missed the deconstructions! You have me creased!
I missed these so much!
i love the Funny Lady soundtrack and of couse Barbra's great voice.
I love your vids Seth!! Btw I think in before the parade passes by, Barbra holds the last note for about 13 seconds there too!! awesome

Seth, love your show. keep up the great work

The title of this literally made me squeal like a lady on the train in Japan! I cannot... more more more you beautiful man!!!
She sounds better twenty years later, live, than she did in the studio. Stronger.
I just discovered you. I love you. I could talk about these things forever.
I really enjoy your deconstructing... have u ever done whitney?
Amazing, all of them!! I have to add one that takes MY breath away every time...Liza at the very end of 'Maybe this Time'/Cabaret. She doesn't take a breath in between the big finish before "win". Nobody does it like her!!!

Lewis Fellows no i haven't...i'll check it out!
I’d like to hear more Mack and Mabel. I recently discovered it after hearing about it for years, and now I listen to the OBC “obsessively”!
Breath Control:....KAREN CARPENTER!!! Anything she does! ex: Goodbye To Love!
Really? I never noticed that.
I was going to say the same exact thing!! She was Incredible!!
Ave Maria is another unbelievable example of her breath control.
Seth, do you know how many of your viewers are die hard fans of Barbra who will tune in to anything you deconstruct of Barbra!
Can we just talk about Eden in this weird little production of Joseph? 2:22, she just holds the C and keeps going, never breathes and goes for the G. How!? Perfection. Eden Espinosa - A Pharaoh Story

Keaton Delmar Johns "piece of sky" yes!
I was just thinking that “A Piece of Sky” is a great example of breath control.
I'm not sure how I got here but you made my day
Barbra..in her Prime...threw these other ladies in the shade. And Everyone, if they're Honest, knows.💯
You are the best!

She brings so much vulnerability to that role. I prefer her Norma over all others.
The fact that Julia Murney is in here makes me so happy
Amazing!!!
How could you leave out Rebecca Luker in Secret Garden - "Come to My Garden"?? Please! Breath control that makes you CRY!
I luh ya, Seth!
Have you presented a deconstruction of Madeline Kahn?
Christopher Pekarik This absolutely needs to happen 🙌
Who was singing people in this video?
God, I love Seth.
yayy deconstructions are back!
You don’t do enough Barbra, Seth!!!
Barbra is heads, mountains, tidal waves over the two other vocalists.. thanks, Seth..!!❤
as a non-native speaker, most of the english words i know, i learned from musical theatre
Lupone - that’s a song she owns … but I still feel Barbra “stole it “ and just made it magical , especially on the end
You should compare the 2 versions
Just saying
Great video
You and your partner are terrific on the video collaboratives

Barbra Streisand labels herself , as an actress who happen to be able to sing, I think. She is an actress first. what do you think ?
Love having the deconstructions back :)
Deconstruct Liza Minnelli and Chita Rivera
