- When you have an old dried up and crusted paint brush you can bring it back from the dead with a little extra work and give it another life if you have a little paint stripper handy.
In this video I'll show you have to do it and some bonus content on conditioning your paint brush to get it ready for action again!

I really like the video. No nonsense and straight to the point. Thank you very much
I almost threw out my wire brush and a paintbrush that is hard as a rock. I usually wrap them in saran wrap and store in the fridge when I'm taking a break but I got lazy and now I'm here. Thanks for the upload and bonus tip. Very cool!
Thank you so much. My brush occurs very harsh I will follow your steps; I am done buying brushes and throwing them away. Thank you for your vlog means a lot to me. I hope you have a blessed one
Great idea! I just tried with a bit of paint-strepper I had to clean a caked up paint brush, and it worked brilliantly. Thank you.
Thanks for sharing the video. My father told me about this way to clean hard brushes about 40 years ago but the final step to condition the brush is a great final step.
Thanks again for the additional information.
Great Video! I have a terrible habit of not cleaning my brushes right away. And thanks for the bonus tip, cant wait to try it 👍
Same
Same here 😅
I wish i had thought of doing this, i threw my favourite brush away because i forgot to clean it. most brushes i am not bothered about because they are cheap and not worth the effort. I like the soft brush trick.
Best thing I learned about paint brush maintenance was that fabric softener trick!
Very good info, thank you. absolutly love this
Love from Sweden
No.....way!!!
Going to try and restore a handful of brushes. Thanks for the video.
Good!...especially the softener trick. I have had a couple of high quality bushes for decades. There is no way I won't clean them, this time I have to use stripper because they were used for oil paint by a worker here in Mexico who didn't clean them well. Not throwing these good old friends in the trash.
Hate to lose a quality brush!
This what I needed. Everything on point. New sub here
I really needed this... thanks!
You just saved me about thirty bucks in brushes, and then an extra twenty because there's a wire brush around here somewhere. Thank you, and I hope you have a great birthday (I can't be wrong, because you'll have one within 364 days).
bin Zinsser shellac the red tin. Work the hard brush into some shellac poured into a tub. The shellac works itself into the brush and it becomes soft. Then clean thoroughly with Met Spirits. Put in a sealed bag and only use the brush for oil-based products. It will harden again very slightly but once the oil-based product works into the bristles its perfect.
Using a wire brush will destroy the bristles, use a brush comb instead.
They are synthetic bristles.. wire brush does not harm the bristles at all
Nice! Gonna try it
I really love Purdy brushes but I'm tired of no matter even after keeping them clean so many times since before I would forget to clean . not anymore there Is always that one time that one time and the fact that the furrel part gets gunked up with buildup ..they are not cheap they run about 30 dollars a brush and I love that you posted this so now I can clean them
Is this method for any base paint? Water, oil, etc.???
Why does this not have 100K views yet? Great info!
Thanks!

Awesome should I just get the strypeeze?
Thank you 🙏🏼
Wonderful, money saved to have to buy new ones
Yea I need mine cleaned now! quick...ain't got time to wait
Thanks ☺️
Great for home owners, but for business owners, it’s cheaper to buy a new brush. I could buy a box of brushes with the time spent cleaning an old brush.
But still a good tutorial on cleaning a stubborn brush.
I applaud this effort to revive a brush that can be repaired even if it takes time to do that. Yes, it may be more economical (at this point in time) to just buy a new one, but it is only more economical to throw away and buy new because damaging our environment is not added into the calculation. Right now it is a luxury to put the time into repairing items, one day it will again be considered frivolous behavior to throw away items that can be repaired.
How is using all those chemicals a better option than to buy a new brush? u moron.
@@gravediggy - You've got to work on your conversation skills.

I am a professional painting contractor and my go to paint brush and roller covers are from the dollar stores! Save tons of $$$ and after job is complete in the dumpster!
You are not a professional painter then LMAO no professional painter would ever use Dollar store brushes you are an absolute liar I've been a painter for 20 years a dollar store brushwood not even last a few hours on a professional paint job and you would be losing money buying a cheap set every job a $25 brush will last 5 years easily. In that time u bought 100 $1 brushes lmfao joke
Can I restore a roller with dry paint I used floor paint on my paint runner pro i washed it straight after use but some of the paint stuck and i couldn't get it off I'm not sure if based or not but I tried cleaning it with a little bit of paint stripper but putting on my gloves hands then scrubbing it into the roller and I tried olive oil as well do I maybe need to soak it? If so what would be a suitable container to sock it in?
Would this method help to remove a dried-paint-filled roller nap from the cage that it’s stuck to?
Fabric softener will prevent the bristles from soaking up paint.
Good to know, thank you
Brilliant. Can I do this with acetone after using acrylic paint in a steel kitchen sink?
This was awesome! I keep buying brushes, and they kept getting hard and dry on me. I was starting to get tired of buying
That's what she said
Then rub paste wax on the handle and into the base of the bristles. So much easier cleaning next time and takes the floof out of the bristles.
I use lacquer thinner! Will do the same thing and better in half or less the amount of time and not all that wire brushing
Me also, Lacquer thinner eats latex paint fast. Just have to be a little careful with it
Oohh, that cool. Thanks for the tip
As a new painter I’ve been pretty annoyed with paint getting packed into the bed of my brushes and no amount of paint thinner and brush comb can get it out. Never even thought to use real paint stripper. I was already using a wire brush also but that stripper goo is genius
You can wash out your bush during your painting before it gets packed into the bed. Just shake out the excess and start painting again.
Watch out for your drainpipes!! I’ve learned by experience cleaning hands,brushes-even with wiping off as much as possible. I got a clog which took a month (reluctant to call plumber) to get out ! Just sorta mounts up, especially latex.
P.s. also any type hair conditioner works well to make a clean brush softer, in case you don’t use Downey.leave hair conditioner in , just flick excess on your pants.
I used hair conditioner on my natural bristle art brushes and it splayed them out and ruined their shape. I will never do that again.
Just came across your channel. What a great channel. Any chance of you doing a ‘how to unclog a paint gun’. I’m desperate for a good information tutorial and you might be the guy as your videos are so easy to follow. I wonder if your day job is a teacher?
Great idea for a video! Not a teacher per se but my day job is teaching my crew how to restore windows and doors so I LOVE teaching!
@@TheCraftsmanBlog THANKS A MILLION FOR SHARING YOUR KNOWLEDGE WITH US/ME!!!
I just did this to 3 Wooster brushes I found in a bin.. nearly as hard a concrete.. now perfect alas a few hairs missing..
Awesome!
Just curious, what's the cost of cleaning products vs new brush! Just saying!
If u have a septic tank than this is a no go😮
Wish I knew I could save brushes. I have all of the products needed. Could have saved $13 for each one I have tossed!
How do I learn to wirebrush as fast ason the video?
What is that liquid 😀😀
by the time yourve spent all that money on the cleaners may as well just by a new brush be cheaper as well
True, but if you have the strippers laying around it’s cheaper.
Factor in the time, too. If your time is worth even something modest, say £10 an hour, then spending more than 30 minutes on this is just not worth it. Of course, what price can you put on the satisfaction of making something useful from something which was not useful.
@@andrewcorrie8936 If you have a Purdy they can go from $12-$25. and if you do a lot of painting it can get expensive fast replacing those all the time. Don't let it get this bad to begin with and it will be a lot less hassle to clean it and get the small pieces of dried paint off.
Is that latex or oil based paint?
Although that brush looks cleaner. It looks worthless to paint with because it looks frizzy. Will be very hard to make a sharp line with it. So it may be cleaner but I wouldn’t call it restored.
Can you rinse the brushes off in the sink with the paint thinner? I thought that could clog the pipes with paint build up?
Someone else said that happened to them so I wouldn't risk it.
Paint thinner should not go in the sink
At the end, hot tap water should restore the shape somewhat
I want to see the video of you cutting a line with that brush 😂
i mean it looks great, i guess if you have really expensive brushes, but i think i may just buy a new 15 dollar brush. its cheaper and safer than all the chemicals
true
Good brushes are double that if not more and when you paint everyday you don’t have the money to throw away brushes and keep buying more
That Strypeeze is not the biodegradable variety. I’m not sure it’s ok to go down the drain. The safety data sheet disposal considerations say not to contaminate lakes, streams, ponds, groundwater or soils. Maybe varies by municipality. Viewers might check with their local water authority first.
Always a good idea. That being said I did not dispose of the excess stripper down the drain only the small amount left on the brush after scrapping it off in the trash.
I’m calling it curtains and throwing my shit away lmao
Not everyone has money to burn I guess 🤷🏾♀️
@@YoungDymisty no we do not but you can only try so hard without overdoing yourself better off getting a new brush (for me)
@@MasSmokes lol I'll use my till they scream at me to throw them away 😉
@@YoungDymisty I see you gurllll, well anyway I hope everything turns out right in regards. Be ez

What was it that you first poured on the paint brush? It went by too fast I'm sorry but I couldn't catch it in time. Lol
You can get Jasco paint brush cleaner at Lowe’s. Works great on oil or latex. I have a septic system. I’d shoot anybody that cleaned brushes in my sink
Better use that as a dust cleaner
This is not a usable brush after cleaning. Maybe a duster.
Rofl
Still using it today and it works great!
@@multisynco25635 the bristles are going every which way..and these types of cleaners tend to ruin the original texture of the bristles so they’re not as tight as when first purchased at the store (think hair fried by a perm!) This would be heck at getting a sharp cut in where it counts. He also didn’t show the inside of the brush (if you “part” the bristles) ..that’s where the paint usually gets gummy and nothing gets in there to comb it out:(
Maybe an ok brush for furniture painting.. or something.. but I wouldn’t let that thing touch a wall.
@@In_time 2:14 the inside of the brush is super clean. as long as the bristles are soft, once they are soaked in paint the bristles would be fine
@@multisynco25635 learn what? English?
YIKES!! When I seen the wire brush come in to play. I know what's going to happen with the bristles in the long run, they're going to fray and become damaged. I don't need to see the outcome, but thanks anyway...
where can I buy this
Home depot, lowes, ace
Lacquer thinner will clean any dry brush
it cost more to strip brush then it was worth.my mother says ''walking over dollars to get to pennies''
Never use a steel brush on a paint brush. Instead a scratch pad or hair comb
Hair comb can get that hardened paint that’s stuck in it?
Remember, it's a Purdy brush, if it's a Chinese paintbrush and you do that, only the handle remains.
Very true!
Put the bristles in boiled water and you can reset them
No
Remember, time is money!
Are all old people tic then?
Not when you are worthless and pathetic. Sometimes, time can cost you money when you are as dumb as the guy in the video.
I’ll fucking try this
Did you pay a whole dollar for the brush?
I saved my lunch money for whole week to buy that brush!
Primeiramente o camarada que deixa isso acontecer com uma trincha purdy, wooster, corona etc não pode ser considerado pintor profissional !!!😢
the amount of products he used... i think one should buy new one... i would save time and effort
Title of the video is “How to” not “why to”
@@FJLC93 your reply is not justifiable... bcuz mostly people do not hv such products at home..or can afford all of them...so its not DIY...
It's cost is more then the price of new brush 🤣🤣🤣
Not expensive brushes
Sa sobrang hassle bili nlng ako bago
I see a mountain of fools missing the point of the video is a way to clean a brush. Would they watch a video on how to drive to a store and buy one? People all over the globe made due with what they have at their disposal, if your "just go to the store" were a 3 hour drive, or a day's hike, would you still make light of it? Not even product specific, heavy thinning agent, agitate, lean thinning agent, agitate, optional conditioner. If you paint all the time, and you throw away brushes after every job, this video is even more relevant, your cost base for the chemicals cycles much better. You muck up a resistant bin to whatever you're going to use with 50 brushes, dump the agent in, do something else for a couple days, have a beer while you clean them up, throw em in the next thinner for a couple days...if you only had to run this process once quarterly or semi annually, then you'd have the entire stockpile. What's your "time is money" argument when you didn't make unnecessary trips to the store because you have dozens of spares aside the fresh one you pick up with the paint for the trimming. It really is some fast food in a carton in a bag side of cheap break on use [should be illegal] plastic cutlery thinking; you plebs need to tighten up, just because you are accustomed to excess doesn't mean a perpetual infinite supply.
You don't need to buy a gallon or 2 chemicals to clean A brush, no. But you've been shown what to look for and what to use it on.
Lol those bristles are fubar
First of, dont get your brush to this condition. But if you did, instead of spending days restoring the brick, spend the 12 bucks and buy a new one
Simply buy a new one 40 rs only
Brush 100 ₹
Cleaning 500 ₹ 😂😂
acetone works better

If he wouldn't have cut the video I would of believed it.
And now you are going to use that brush for painting ? Not me
If your the type of person to let that happen to your brush highly don't think you will restore it.
Now don’t clean it after you use it and start again!
Using chemical & removing it not a big thing waste 5mints
Absolutely fucked that brush up..looks like a mop now
That was all a waste, it is still only good for a dust brush at that point
Works great for me cutting in or any other kind of painting I need.
@@TheCraftsmanBlog yeah I wouldn't use that thing for anything finish painting your cutting in like that maybe some oil prime or just a dust brush like I said, I'm a professional painter and have dozens of like new brushes to choose from tho
Just buy a new one it’s cheaper
Maybe but that’s not the point.
@@TheCraftsmanBlog the point is senseless
Apologies, next time I’ll post a video of me shopping for a new brush.

Labor and materials not worth the brush
Wow! A whole bunch of toxic chemicals into the environment to save a $5 brush! Genius!
Yeah. He spent like $20 to make that mess.
Time, effort, cost of materials, not worth it. Just buy a new brush
This is why I hate painting.
That brush is useless, bristles are wrecked and all that paint stripper down the drain can’t be good for the environment.
