In this video, I'm going to show you a massive paint store mistake that you need to avoid if you want your home to look its best.
I'm talking about the mistake of getting too cute with custom colors. A lot of people like to make subtle adjustments to paint color formulas thinking that they'll turn out perfectly. A lot of the time, it ends in disaster.

Have you tried dabbling with custom colors?

I did. That's why you can walk into my local paint shop and grab a gallon of Alicia's Bedroom. A deliciously dark green reminiscent of Antique Olive by Glidden but just a touch darker.

No, but I’ve thought about it- for instance, I’d like a mid tone blue with considerable gray. Do you have any idea what that color would look like? TIA

When trying to choose a paint for my main living area, I knew the “feel” I wanted (soft velvety mauve, like wrapping up in a mauve blanket), so I painted several 18x20” canvasses (a pack of five, from Michael’s), then hung them around the room on 3M Command hooks so I could see how each looked in different locations, at different times of day. I ended up with, as James’ sis calls it, “brink” (brown pink), Rose Dust 1010.

Thank you for sharing that Benjamin Moore stores are independently owned. I am a small business owner and I try to support stores and businesses that are too!

I bought Palladian blue from Benjamin Moore and tested it out on my bedroom walls. Beautiful color. But it really was a tad too dark. So I went back to the BM store and the dude behind the counter asked me how it went. Then HE was the one who told me he could mix one that was 25% lighter. So I took the paint sample home and it was perfect. Painted whole bedroom.
8 years later I wanted to sell the house and decided to repaint the room in the same color. New dude behind the counter. I told him I wanted a 75% Palladian blue and he looked at me like I had 2 heads.
“We don’t do that.” No amount of coaxing would convince him that they did indeed do that there.
And I guess the old dude hid the color card with my name and mix on it. (I watched him write one up so 🤷🏼‍♀️).
Anyway, it seems like it takes a long time to learn how to do it. I’m no designer but I know color.

Thank you James. What a topic!! Sometimes there are gradations already available on the colour swatches in store. And sometimes you just feel the need to go in between two shades? That might be better than saying 25% darker or lighter.

So true. The color adjusting can go horribly wrong for sure

I did a custom color for my exterior bc I was unhappy with the tone of a bm color and I am very very happy I did the custom color. I am also very happy I used a high quality paint like bm.

I didn't make custom color, but, I wanted a discontinued color Martha Stewart's sharkey gray. The color did not disappoint. We used sharkey gray in the main downtown stairs area. Thanks

Last year I was looking for a "perfect" cerulean blue. I thought I found the color I saw in AD, however, after testing that shade of blue on my walls I decided that I needed a more saturated blue, yet not too green or aqua. I went all out and tested over 8 samples of blues eventually finalizing on Toronto Blue, however, I felt that the color had too low LRV and may look too dark on the fall days. A person from the paint store was the one who recommended me to go 25% lighter, I took a chance and it worked. Love the color! However, in 95% of time I do not need to modify color unless really struggling to find the right one.

My mom wanted a very light gold for her sitting room. She found a shade of gold she loved, then kept having the painter add white. Again, and again, and again. Finally she got the right light gold, and had her whole room painted in that. She absolutely loved it.

Great video! my advice is to just got for it... if you like red then don´t be scared of painting the walls red... what´s the point otherwise? No color will be exactly like you see in a sample or your computer, so... enjoy the feeling of it, whether if it´s a shade lighter or darker.

For me I knew I wanted light blue almost white. But it was the undertones that gave me a hard time. I wanted zero gray and 3 yrs ago THAT was hard to find.

I could see exploring this approach to create contrast in space painted one color (ie walls baseboard and other trim are painted the same color) but in most cases, I must say, with the zillion colors now available, I think it is just the interior designer showing off

    • @thepaintpeople
      @thepaintpeople  11 місяців тому +1

Yeah... there are a number of ways you can create contrast without having to customize your own colors!

the only time I dabble with customizing paint is when I paint the 5th wall -ceiling. In example mascarpone AF-20, we cut it 50% to knock the yellow down for the ceiling. And honestly, I'm disappointed I thought this was going to be a live Q & A time, Oh well, short and sweet is nice too.

The line gets drawn at 25%-50% and never commit to colors in the store itself always look at them in the lighting they will be present in.

Why would you be making red paint in a Base 1? When you make paint in an ultradeep base you get the same color just with worse hide.
