    Many truck drivers frequently get split weights on tandem axles on a regular CAT scale.
    You have to let the scale operator know that you are going to need multiple readings, and you will be moving the rig between weights.
    Pull just the front tires onto the scale, stop, and tell the operator you are ready for your first weight.
    When they tell you they have it, pull forward until the front axle of your rear tandems is on the scale but the back axle is still on the concrete. Get another weight.
    When the operator confirms they have it, pull forward until all of the axles are on the scale and get the last weight.
    When you get your scale ticket, it will have three separate axle weights. With some basic addition and subtraction, you can figure out each axle weight.
    If you have 3 axles, it will take three weighings. For a 2-axle rig, it only takes 2.
    One problem that happens too often is that a new employee may not know how to do individual split pad weights, so you have to find someone who knows.
    If no one knows how to do it, you can still get the weights.
    First, put just the front axles on the scale. Get the weight, then drive completely off of the scale.
    Then drive around and pull back on the scale with the front axle and the front tandem axle on the scale. Get another weight.
    Drive completely off the scale again, then drive around and pull back on and weigh again with all the axles on. (You have to pull all the way off for the scale to "reset.")
    Again, basic math will give you all your individual axle weights. You will have to pay the "re-weigh" fee for the 2nd and 3rd weighs, but that is usually just a couple dollars each.
    I have done this process over a hundred times in 18-wheelers because I was "heavy haul" with 8 axles instead of the normal 5.
    It is very easy to do after you've done it a few times.

    Thank you, gents...thanks to your advice I bought my VIAIR compressor right after buying my rig and recently got the Snap-Ring covers which are great. I understand the reason for corner weights, but it's challenging to get those weights so I use the Truck Stop scales as the next best thing. Great video!

    Thank you for doing this. Downloaded and read it. Great job. My opinion is it’s better to weigh at a truck stop than nothing and get a ballpark weight, it’s so much easier. Then follow the inflation steps. I also try to get the pressure reading the day before a trip, it can take some time to get a tire filled and you might not have it the day of travel.

      @@RVgeeks Thanks for the reply guys! Yes, that was me. Bought it used with 15,000 miles and the tow plate already installed. It’s the Titanium version and we love it. It’s got all of the safety/tech that my wife’s BMW X5 has. Pulls well behind the MH (we have a 34 foot Tiffin Open Road Allegro gasser - doubt you would even feel it behind your big rig!). We have the RVi portable brake system and got the RVi Towed Battery Charger. From everything I read, that’s mandatory as the small battery in the Escape will die otherwise. With the battery charger, we’ve had no issues! The Hybrid MPG is 50+ w/o A/C, 40’s with A/C. Let me know if you have other questions. Have learned a lot watching and reading your content! Don

    What are your thoughts on Nitrogen v Air. I prefer nitrogen, but carry a compressor for back-up/emergencies. Great to see you back.

    • @RVgeeks
      @RVgeeks  2 роки тому

      Hi Don. Thanks! Great to be back! 😉 On the air -vs- nitrogen topic, we’re not sure that there’s enough (if any) advantage to using it for something like RV tires. There’s an article in Consumer Reports where they tested (www.consumerreports.org/tire-buying-maintenance/should-you-use-nitrogen-in-car-tires-a6260003694/) and found that both air and nitrogen leaked out of consumer tires inflated to 30psi and left outside, untouched, for a year. The nitrogen DID leak out less than the plain air (Nitrogen down 2.2 psi, air-filled down 3.5psi after a year), but it did still leak.
      One concern they mention in the article, which is a good one, is that filling with Nitrogen can lead people to think they don’t need to check their tire pressures as frequently… which could lead to a dangerous situation if they had a leak they didn’t catch.
      Using Nitrogen does have advantages for some very specific applications, though. Like the tires on landing gear for airliners. Or for race cars. In both situations, they want to reduce the presence of moisture and oxygen which, under the extreme conditions tires in these applications experience, is important for tire life and performance. Since the process of extracting Nitrogen eliminates both, it’s of benefit… and is the cheapest, most readily available inert gas to use.

    Did you ever post the documentary from the ballon festival last year? We was on the ride with you

    • @RVgeeks
      @RVgeeks  Рік тому

      Hi! That episode of The RVers did indeed air on Discovery, and should be available soon on Apple TV and Google Play, as well as PBS stations across the country. We shot so much footage that the entirety of the Season 4 final episode was devoted to the Balloon Fiesta. But there was SO much footage shot by the four of us that they couldn't come close to fitting it all into a 30-minutes episode, so our balloon ride mostly ended up on the cutting room floor. But we're hopeful that a segment interviewing two different balloon pilots (including the one on the flight we shared with you) will make it into an upcoming episode. Thanks so much for your interest, and hope you get to catch it on streaming services when it hits. More show info here: thervers.tv

    Stop complicating my tire life with expectations beyond the door panel of my Class C!!! LOL Also very upset I missed this video and missed out on the Viair Giveaway. Been thinking about it a lot recently, since putting a heavier duty compressor in my storage bay caused it to sag. I looked into the Viair before and felt I couldn't justify the expense. Lesson learned, I'll be setting aside some pennies to purchase one in the future. Because having the ability to inflate a tire, if it can be repaired with a plug, is a DEFINITE necessity!

    I have been super frustrated trying to find a place to property weigh my RV according to your instructions on getting position weights. The places I found that do this are few and far between, and are states away from where I live. I've called many RV sales and service places (who don't seem know what I'm talking about, even Camping World), and also called the organizer of the annual NC RV convention. No luck. What is the second best approach to ensuring proper inflation when it's just not possible to get each tire weighed? I love your blog - thank you!!

    • @RVgeeks
      @RVgeeks  Рік тому

      Hi Mary. Sorry we're just now seeing your question a few days later. The safest course of action when no weights are available is to inflate to the maximum sidewall pressure as listed on the tire. The ride will likely be a bit firmer than necessary, but it's the safest thing to do. Next try a shop that does motorhome alignments, because we're pretty sure they have to weight the corners prior to doing the alignment so they'll know the proper settings. Also, try the Escapees SmartWeigh program or check with the RV Safety & Education Foundation, who also does weighings. Links to both of them, and much more, are here in our blog post on the topic: www.thervgeeks.com/rv-tire-pressure/ Hope this helps!

No need to respond again. I appreciate your quick reply!

    Hi, how can I contact you about the product sponsorship?

  • @Powerstroke98
    @Powerstroke98 2 роки тому

    I was trying to download/save as .pdf which doesn't work, as often I'm in locations with no wifi or cell coverage, so obviously saving the link won't be of much help if on the road in some locations. As far as I've read so far, I haven't come to a point in the book where one can find the portable scales (can you rent them?) or if specific portable scales are more accurate than others? Same goes with the Michelin tire choices, as I believe my particular Michelin tires are not made any more, so getting close I suppose is the best I can do. Much has changed over the years, and even finding tires for Motorhomes can be a challenge, especially here in south-western Canada. Often other brands are available, being one of the only options. Onto the same initial subject, the availability on the road or in locations far from cities towns creates an issue on 'tire information' which is so very important as mentioned, so I'll just have to cross my fingers that the situation doesn't appear. Thanks for the video, and often I go by my TPMS as to what my tired pressure is...but did order the Accurate gauge you advised on the e-book! Upon edit- Having XZA3+ going by the manufacturers inflation chart, I'm 'over' on my PSI (front) by 5 lbs, so I'll change that, but I can only go by guessing to some extent, as our Tiffin Phaeton has only been weight, front to rear, and I have no clue as to where a portable scale might be. I looked up at 'buying one' and they must be expensive, as they won't even show the price!

    • @RVgeeks
      @RVgeeks  2 роки тому

      Portable scales are very expensive, and not the kind of thing that most RVers would ever consider owning. We did include links in the book to the Escapees SmartWeigh program, and the RVSEF, but not sure they have anything here in SW Canada.
