I was really impressed with all the jigs you’ve created to make this comb. Especially those sanding guides! And then to top it off, using a vacuum process to finish the wood? Genius! Good job.
Jake Horton thank you! I’ve been accused of making tools to make fixtures to make jigs to make things... it’s a curse and fun stuff. Be well! 🤙
Hey Mike, glad to see you back. Can’t wait to hear how it sounds. Oh wait... wrong video.
TheBookerstein thank you! He’s been playing with the guitar for a bit now and it does sound great. I’m waiting to see if he posts something and I’ll for sure share. Thanks for checking this out!
I found you on Etsy first and I am amazed! I really loved that I could watch how you make your products with these videos because I can apreciate your hard work even more. Thank you for sharing your talent with us. I will be purchasing from your Etsy store.
Thank you so much for taking the time to watch the video and for your purchase! It means a heap!!!
Excellent Video, beautiful work and thank you very much for sharing the details, very kind of you!
Wood is so awesome! So are your skills Mike! Welcome back!! Cool beard!👍🏻😁
Simplesmente perfeito
I loved the video! The comb like beautiful, but I was wondering if you could elaborate more (or point me in a direction to learn more) on that finishing process in the end. I've only ever seen vacuum pumps used for resin, but it didn't look like you were using resin on the comb. Would you mind explaining?
Thank you for the kind words! I used the same type of pump and chamber one would use with resin but I use mineral oil. I made the chamber out of PVC pipe and fittings from a home center and the pump is repurposed from a breathing treatment machine. I’ve used pumps off of mini fridges as well. I hope this helps. Hit me up with any other questions.
👍🏻👍🏻
Thanks for creating such tutorials. May I know what is the purpose of pump when use you the mineral oil as the protection layer? What is the principle behind? Would you mind elaborate a bit? If I don't have such tools, is there any other alternative way to top up the oil? Many thanks!
Thank you for the kind words. I use the vacuum to pull out the air in the wood and replace it with oil. The hope is that the finish lasts longer. You don’t need to to do it this way, soaking or wiping on will work well. I also wipe on a beeswax paste after the oil. You could use beeswax as the only finish as well. I hope this helps and thank you for stopping by!!!
I need one for my beard
Right on. I’ve got a couple in my Etsy site and can make more! There’s a link in the description. Thanks for the comment! Be well.
what type of wood you used?
i liked your making & your video is so good
all the best for your channel
Chaitu's world thank you for the kind words! The wood used is cherry from a tree that I used to climb as a child. Fun stuff! Thanks again.
Great video! What was the process you used at the end with the vacuum ? Was that just for finishing the wood ? I've never seen this technique.
Hello and thank you for checking the video out! I use a shop built vacuum chamber to pull the oil deep into the wood. Under vacuum all the air is pulled out of the wood while submerged in mineral oil. When the vacuum is turned off I allow them to soak for at least two hours allowing the wood to pull oil back in where there once was air. I hope this makes sense. It creates an oils finish that lasted much longer compared to soaking or wiping on alone.
Would you recommend using tung oil as a covering along with a bee's wax finish?
Tung oil could work but I prefer food safe finishes since it comes in contact with the body and could transfer to your hair. There are butcher block finishes that I have used in the past with success that are a combination of wax and oils.
@@MustCreateThings thanks!
I was told that tung oil is one of the best but I've been apprehensive concerning is usage.
Did you make the jigs and molds? I have some wood from a really old tree. I would like to try to make one
Any insight on how to make your sanding fixtures?
The dark black bits are drawn up in CAD (Fusion360) and 3D printed (Makerbot Rep2). The rest are plywood scraps that create a reference surface on the sander. The black printed parts have an arc on them to create the curve. There are two because the blank starts out with two flat sides. I use the first fixture to hold and reference a flat side and the second fixture references and holds the recently sanded (curved) surface in order to make it symmetrical. I hope this makes sense. Thank you for stopping by and for taking the time to comment!
Thanks for sharing, how long does it take to make a comb?
It takes about an hour. This includes the time to mill and glue up blanks. Hope all is well.
Amazing work, congrats! What oil do you use?
Thank you! I use food grade mineral oil. Often I get it from the pharmacy section of most corner stores.
How long does it usually take to manufacture?
I can make one in a day, but I typically span it over a week. I hope this helps. Thank you for reaching out!
What oil did you use? Awesome job.
Thank you! I use mineral oil. The kind you get near the pharmacy, without fragrance. I hope this helps you make some for your own! Be well.
Brilliant! Hey I just want to know, wooden comb is considered eco friendly product, but there is a lot of waste too, like what do you do of that wood powder? And the small pieces of wood?
I keep it all, well not the dust, and make smaller things out of it. I can’t toss out scrap. I hope all is well with you. Thanks for stopping by!
Shalom love and I’m new here. And I have a question is this comb good for all hair types especially for people with kinky curly hair or people with thin fine kinky curly hair @MustCreateThings
Thank you for the note. I would recommend a wide tooth comb for that type of hair. This video covers my fine tooth combs and I do offer wide combs at my Etsy shop. They are easier to make if you’d like to give it a go. Follow the same approach but use a wider table saw blade. Hope all is well with you🤙🤙🤙
good afternoon. what do you impregnate combs with?
I use food grade mineral oil. Then a couple coats of beeswax/oil mixture.
Супер!
Would grapeseed oil or tea tree oil work with beeswax? Thank you for the tutorial!
Also, is there anyway I can soak the wood in the oil without using the vacuum process and have similar results?
Any oil should work under beeswax or similar wax. Yes you can soak it in oil and it will work well. I just found that it would dry out faster without. But you can reapply the wax instead. Hope all is well. Good luck!
What is the best wood to make comb
There are so many great choices. I prefer dense woods with tight grain. And make sure the grain is in the direction of the teeth of the comb. If not they are prone to break. Good luck!
which wood can be used?
Really any wood can be used if you laminate it. I choose to laminate to increase the strength of the teeth of the comb. If you choose a single piece of wood, have the grain run in the direction of comb's teeth. This will reduce the chance of the teeth breaking at the grain lines. I hope this helps, good luck!
छान बनवलीय पण बरमा टिक वापरा जास्त छान होईल ।या कर्त्याचं ऊत्तर चेरी वूड आहे।त्यांनी भारतीय म्हणून दिलं नाही तुम्हाला !!
oh ya. so you need 10k dollars table saw to make 50 cents of wooden comb. thanx for the video.
How to make a wooden comb with every expensive tools there is
I have ordered 2 wood combs, both were coated with varnish 😒.
I need a wood comb that 100% natural and chemical free.
If it needs to be sealed some thing I would prefer something natural like beeswax.
I can’t use some thing on my beard that contains unnatural chemical varnish
Hello, if you ordered a comb from me it was only treated with food grade mineral oil and rubbed with beeswax just before shipping. I agree a wood comb should be 100% natural. I still have some available for sale at my Etsy shop. Hope all is well and that you find what you are looking for!!!
How much the cost i will buy wooden comb
HJose Rizal thank for the view. I have a few of them on my Etsy site for sale. Link in the video description.
Makes me appreciate my wood comb much more now. Thanks for the talent.
Thank you for you kind words 🤙🤙🤙
