  • A Young Man after 6 years of Training, Permitted for the First Time to make a Precious Boxwood Comb
Hideaki Mori, the young Tsuge comb craftsman preserving traditional Japanese culture. At the Tsuge comb shop “Kushidome” in Nagoya, Aichi prefecture, Hideaki, who joined after he graduated college, studying under his father Shingo Mori. Found this familiar work more difficult than he imagined for the first year and a half or so.
After 6 years of working with his master and father Shingo, Hideaki has been entrusted with a big job, An order from a Tokoyama in Kyoto: a 6-sun or 18 cm unraveling comb. Before that, he’s only been allowed to work on 4-sun, or 12cm combs. The comb which will fulfill that goal is the first he’s ever made.
The boxwood trees are used as materials for making Tsuge combs. To make a 6-sun comb, a precious plank sourced from a tree 18cm in diameter, over 100 years old, is necessary. There is a method of straightening the planks, passed down for generations. The planks that have warped after a year of shade drying are bundled together, inserted into the barrel, and smoked. Doing this straightens them out, and removes the last of the moisture from the boxwood. They are smoked for 3 months, then shade dried another 3 months, and so on and so on for 5 years until at last planks suitable for combs are produced. Some of these planks need to repeat the process for as much as 10 years to straighten.

Does the horsetail adhere to the file without adhesive? Do either father or son listen to some sort of music to help maintain the cadence of their file strokes? Thank you for this presentation.

Yes, horsetail after being soaked and scraped out, just leaving the husk. Once dried, it will stick very firmly on the file without any adhesive. both as I know are wanting to be quiet while working

@@WoodworkingEnthusiasts Speaking as a full time woodworker of 45 years experience, I'm interested in experimenting with such traditional techniques. Another is burnishing with oil and chain mail and I've obtained a bit of that. The horsetail, fortunately, seems to grow in all the mid-latitudes including here in Wyoming.

Maybe not. Get it up to the point where the traditional methods matter. These comb guys act like they never heard of 600 grit sandpaper. And a polishing wheel with medium compound might be good.

I agree. This whole 6-7 years training to make a comb is lame. It's like a being fancy scam. And they have to be smoked... for what.
