  • Hot sand wherever you turn your eyes to - the Namib is the oldest desert of the world, and one of the most hostile ones. But even here, in a valley named Hoanib, there is life! Some animals have developed unique ways to adapt to the harsh life in such a dry area. The biggest of them are Desert Elephants! To survive in Namibia´s desert they have to travel long distances, full of privations. Only alpha cow Clarissa knows where to find the rare water sources. Food is scarce and the heat unbearable, for young Maya the next water source could already come too late. Old bull One Tusk even awaits a harder fate: he is too old and weak to join his family´s migration. While even the tough jackals leave the Hoanib valley during the dry season to find food along the coast, One Tusk remains alone, hoping that soon rain will bring salvation.

Elephants are so cool.Even as a kid i couldn't believe people would buy ivory knowing the animal was poached just for it's tusks.

What a harsh yet beautiful place. I wouldn’t make a good documentary photographer, cause I would’ve been on top of that tree cutting branches for the old one tusk.

Wish the government would dam the rivers to capture some of that water going to the sea. That would aid the animals and the environment

    • @mandandi

Noble idea. How do you dam a river bed in the sand? The water will seep into the sand anyway in a relatively short time.

@@mandandi-- True. Never thought of that. However, some of that water could be channeled to the natural water holes , encouraging them to expand

@deidradahl2802 agree. Instead of going to the sea, diverting to a pan or something similar if one exists nearby could be beneficial in recharging underground aquifers. However, it might be way cheaper to harvest lots of water from the fog. Nets are way cheaper to buy and set up than earthworks.

🇳🇦 namibia is only itself to blame. It has one of the largest aquifer in the world! Yet it doesn't care about it dryness. Scientists say that, that aquifer water coul d be used by Namibia for 400 years! Why is the Namibia government not doing it?

Same thing I was thinking. Why not also dam some of the rivers that only flow once or twice a year, creating a lake, instead of all the water going to the sea?

    • @deidradahl2802

@@peteravery3738 '' Damaging the environment""" how? Right now the water just flows straight to the ocean, . I think it could be dammed for at least every other year. Around that dam there would be greenery. I would really like to see it tried. I donate to the conservation of animals in the wild, and the restoration of the habitat. Would really like to know your idea

@@peteravery3738 I should add, not a permanent dam, just a diversion long enough to create a small lake. Then close off the opening so the river can continue on it's normal course, refreshing the lake once in a while

Tell them about global warming, and so called carbon pollution rubbish. They can adapt, but humans with all the technology and sparkles and spangles don't want to adapt because they want to buy comfort and push a button for it. On the other hand I would love to help these animals, however this is the life of them, I can not expose my life on them
