  • From its beginning in 1999, Salt Lake City's light rail and BRT networks have grown to over 78 stations, spanning 135 miles (217 kilometers). This animated video takes you through the timeline of when new stations were opened, forming the TRAX light rail network that we know today.

As a local, I am glad to see you get to my home city!
    A few things you've missed...
A Station in Vineyard (in between American Fork and Orem) is expected to begin construction any day now.
The frontrunner is also going to be extended to Brigham City in the north and Payson in the south.
The blue line will be extended south to Lehi either by the right of way the old D&RGW right of way UTA has owned for years or through West Draper pending development when the state prison closes.(or a BRT since that seems to be UTA's way of cheaping out of their promises lately.)
A new station at the airport as part of the new terminal construction.
The UVX has essentially been open since August 2018.
there are also plans by UTA to open a new line to Tooele and also a BRT running along State street in Utah County.
A BRT running from SLC to the Woods Cross Frontrunner station.
A BRT running along 5600 South in west SL County from the Airport to Daybreak Parkway station.
An extension of the S-line to Highland Drive.

    • @utahrailfan1946

Thanks for these! My criteria for inclusion is that a construction tender has to have been awarded, so that’s why most of these weren’t included. I realized that I missed the new TRAX station at 650 South though, which is opening this year.

Right, which is kind of disappointing since UTA has promised light rail towards lehi and eventually Orem for years. Only to have them go cheap in it instead. It is hard to see public distrust Of UTA often because people think that their tax money only raises executive’s salaries.

It's a shame UTA doesn't have any major plans to extend their light rail. I've ridden on all the lines before and I can tell you that it's an amazing and safe transit system (unlike most in America). Salt Lake County has notoriously bad traffic so a lot of times after work I'd just hop on UTA to get from 1300 South to Sandy.

@@VanishingUnderground yeah considering that our L was originally owned by 3 separate companies. The Red Purple And Brown Lines were owned by The Northwestern Elevated Railroad. The Green Line was owned by two companies depending on what part of the line you're on. If you're on The Lake Street Part it was owned by The Lake Street Elevated Railroad which is the second oldest L Line in Chicago and Chicago and South Side Rapid Transit Railroad which The Green Line runs south of downtown is the oldest part. And the Blue and Pink Lines run on tracks that were part of The
Metropolitan West Side Elevated Railroad which fun fact was the first L Line to be operated via electricity. I know all of this because I live in the Chicago Area and I have a love for trains.

And from how the commuter line has multiple interchanges with the light rail, it's actually set up like this! That's cool to see in such a small network when even big networks don't implement it

But legitimate question: given the potential for SLC to host the Winter Olympics once again next decade, on top of there being only so much highway capacity to/from Park City & Heber City…
Has some notable BRT or LRT service ever been proposed for that particular direction? Most likely paralleling I-80 & US 189?
    >If not directly branching off of the Red Line first thing east of Utah University, utilizing Foothill Drive between there & I-80, as well as potentially originating in downtown if it’s LRT?
    >As well as potential for a Provo-to Park City BRT line between either Provo’s downtown or their Frontrunner station?
And has there been any notable discussion of adding either a light rail or commuter rail line back & forth from SLC to Tooele? Scratching the surface, that might be the less desirable area of the entire Wasatch sprawl, to which could likely translate to affordable housing stock once the rest of the valley REALLY starts filling up, to which could eventually mean a legitimate boom within that immediate area in the coming decades, to which would effectively warrant significant transit investment/scoping within that entire little valley as a whole.

Someone should produce videos that expose for all to see the financials for both capital costs to construct and yearly operating expenses as a comparison of fare revenue.

Too bad the light rail caters more to rich areas like Daybreak and Sugar house. It goes like 20 feet into West Valley which isn't much help and people that really need it in Kearns are left out. BRT is just a waste of time.

We now have another BRT route in Ogden, (Ogden Express), serving the Ogden Central station, Weber State University, and McKay Dee Hospital. Double tracking the FrontRunner is about to begin construction, as well as an extension to Payson. Other BRT routes are pending funding, and TRAX is about to get a new line, as well as a few new proposed alignments through downtown. Proposals are also out there to bury the FrontRunner and freight tracks, and reactivate the old Rio Grande depot, known as the Rio Grande plan.
