@@harvey1954 first time I heard it was probably 77 on the sire new wave sampler. Fantastic album with ramones talking heads damned etc. But this was the standout track
What really stands out is the phenomenal bass guitar from George. Just great! There is so much talent in this band. Great songwriting, presentation.... Hi from an old fan.
the 1976 lp has some of the greatest tunes ever !! "you tore me down" / "teenage confidential" & of course this masterpiece..."shake some action". it can bring tears to a 70"s teenage eyes !!!
This song.... the plimsouls , million miles away. and the long riders gunslinger man are absolutely my top 3 songs from this era . If your not familiar please give em a listen. Thank me later.
In my Top 10 of all times! I had the honour to work with Chris Wilson when The Brracudas where on my label, Flicknife Records, and he joined the band. A true talent!
An awesome record. I first heard this on a compilation I bought in 1978 called "New Wave" and liked it instantly. Fast forward forty years and hearing it again makes me realise it is one of the finest power pop records of all time. Simply magic
One of the Top !0 rock songs as far as I am concerned. I own many versions and all of them cook. I made my kids listen to this growing up and they still rock out when it comes on. An influential song for many rockers. The Groovies have got to be one of the best garage/crunch bands, along with the MC5, Plimsouls and Smithereens. Great drumming in this video.
Oh yes!! They were a REAL band, they were, hugely underrated. Love this powerful version of one of the greatest rock'n'roll songs ever... I'm a middle-aged head now, but I still need to shake some action, it's not lost any of its meaning..
Jack Johnson Is a G-R-E-A-T guitarist. In the 80's when not playing with The Groovies he was living In Boston & playing with Unattached. They where Boston's hardest drinking band with an endless supply of good looking, good time women around them @ all times. Unattached wrote 'Trash', the title track for Alice Coopers most successful album & Jack Is featured on that recording along with some of the guy's from Aerosmith. Jack was a brilliant musician, one of the very best on the scene back then.
I heard the song back when it came out, didn't know who did it and only heard it on the radio three other times until listening to Little Steveys Underground Music and found out the name of the band. It's one of my top three favorite songs the other two are My Baby Blue- BAD Finger, Crimson and Clover
Yes it was the 1970's and they were the band that made rock music interesting for me again. I love the album "Shake Some Action" what an incredible execise in style!
Love the original but this is the ultimate version. Just an incredible song from start to finish. This song makes me feel so good every time I hear it. In my top 10 of all time.
If you like 80s vocal, guitar and drum sounds you might prefer this version, but for me it's got to be the original released in 76. A transcendent masterpiece that deserves to be as well known as Bohemian Rhapsody or Sweet Child o' Mine.
This song wows me every time I hear it. I know it is not politically correct but this version is better than the original. The original was great but this version is just so awesome. The vocals, the drums, the guitar solos. Love it. Just saw that they are playing in Jersey City in a few months. Will try to go.
Cyril Jordan knew what rock and roll was. The first 20 seconds of this song is a classic !!!! At that time the Groovies were pure pop rock and deserve a thanks for keeping it real :)
Arguably the greatest rock song of all time. This 1980s version doesn't really do it full justice. Shame the original recording has not been posted. Chris Wilson is now living in North London and still playing this song at his live gigs. His UA-cam videos may not have the best sound quality but are closer in spirit to the track laid down by the Groovies with producer Dave Edmunds in 1976
I would not have discovered this band had I not watched Private Lessons over the weekend...starring Sylvia Kristel...who was in a French flick...and these guys were on the soundtrack.
Back in the summer of 1976 the campus radio station I worked in received some new releasaes from GRT Reords on the Sire label. One was the Flamin' Groovies "Shake Some Action" lp; the other was the first Ramones lp. Took me a little while to get into the Ramones - thought all their songs sounded the same - but the Groovies quickly became one of my favourite bands. Saw them years later at the El Mocambo in Toronto - my all time best concert ever! Met them after the show as well!
The Flaming Groovies got well known during the early 70's but most people don't know that they started in 1965. They came out of San Francisco the same time bands like Jefferson Airplane, The Grateful Dead and Quicksilver Messenger Service were getting noticed. The Flaming Groovies were totally different than the other bands at the time. They kept their hair short for a long time and they didn't play psychedelic music. They fit more with the punk and power pop bands.
Well we can be comforted. We are listening to power pop at its finest. There may only be a modest list of power pop songs this potent. I'm workin on the list for the starry eyes of the girl of my dreams.
...I'd have to go with nagaflas , here. This must be the Jack Johnson/Paul Zahl (SVT , Roky's great "Don't Slander Me" Lp , too. )lineup , which actually did some decent stuff. This version is'nt blowing my mind or anything , but , it's cool. Thank you for posting it.

@pernicketty That's right (duh!). SVT was Jack Casady's "new wave" band (good for him!). Like the Loney era Groovies as well, especially Supersnazz lp.
