"Toaru" just stands for "A Certain" and the names are different because they all focus on the different characters. "Magical Index" is basically the "main" story line and focuses on the dude with black hair and the girl with white Hair (her name is literally Index). "Scientific Railgun" is about the coin tossing girl (she is the railgun with her ability). (nickname Railgun) "Scientific Accelerator" is the about the White haired guy (nickname Accelerator) It all plays in the same world/universe and they are connected
The Toaru series began in 2004 with A Certain Magical Index. The author, Kamachi Kazuma, is a legend who's never had writers block and turns up a light novel every three months for twenty years, while doing other series on the side. Although Index is the main story, there are numerous side stories which also became serialized in manga or LN and expand on characters and lore. Most notable are Railgun and Accelerator (both anime adapted) but others include Dark Matter, Item, Mental Out, and Astral Buddy. Most of the plot happens within Academy City, a -mad- scientist haven boasting 30-40 years of technological advance and has developed esper powers. 80% of the city's population are students, ranked according to their esper ability from Level 0 (ability is virtually nonexistent) to Level 5 (ability has the strategic value of a nuke). Academy City itself provides plenty of drama, with countless tragedies from child experiments to human cloning and underage kids murdering each other happening within eye distance of comedic school life. Moreover, AC as a quasi-independent city-state is the leader of the Science Side in a global struggle against the Magic Side, made up of the major religions, various sects and magic cabals. MC Kamijou Touma is a Level 0, whose right hand nonetheless contains a special power. Imagine Breaker, which cancels out supernatural powers, esper or magic, and _many other things._ Moreover his personality drags him into trying to save everyone no matter the odds. So it is only natural that he should try and save the poor nun who unexpectedly landed on his balcony... Virtually the entire timeline happens in six months, so there are multiple arcs running in parallel. The true joy of being a Toaru fan is to see how every event connects to the others accross medium, like some small detail in the main story actually has a fascinating explanation in the concurrent side story, or how an obsure, minor character ends up in the spotlight. Some characters make multiple appearances and you get to see new aspects of their personality. Toaru's strongest point is its world building as explained. A weak point is that the early arcs have not aged well. It is an old series after all, some of the tropes that were fresh in early 2000s are generic by now. Touma unfortunately comes off as bland in the anime because his character development (11/10 btw) only happens later in the light novel. But if you dive in deep enough, it all retrospectively fixes itself. _"This is the story of a conflict that spreads far and wide around someone who does not know why they have the power they do."_ - A Certain Magical Index, New Testament Vol. 6
Ah toaru, the series that got me into anime in the first place. Toaru is less a story about a specific character, but rather the story of "academy city" a city roughly 20-30 years more advanced than the rest of the world. The main thing that they study however is psychic powers. So that majority of the characters that live in academy city that have psychic powers are called espers. For this side of the story, it's all about rouge mad scientists trying to use the characters for their own goals, some science experiment gone wrong, or just two espers fighting each other for one reason or another. However outside this city of science is the rest of the world, ruled by religion and magic. Numerous magical cabals fight each other for control over magic, and several of which are trying to destroy academy city for their own reasons. One of the most important magic characters is actually taking refuge in academy city (the white "priestess girl" as you call her) which brings the main cast into conflict with the magic side as well. All the different arcs with different characters are typically all happening at the same time, so you constantly see other characters in the background doing their own story arc that you saw in another season. Or occasionally the story arcs cross over so you see the same events from different perspectives. I would say to watch the Anime, but it does suffer from quite a few pacing problems. The index magic side is usually too rushed, and skips over too many important details, while the railgun science side, has a lot of filler and is generally a bit too slow. So I highly recommend just reading the source material, it's really really good. Execpt for accelerator(the spinoff focusing on the white hair guy), that one the source material is kinda bad, but the Anime version of it fucking slaps. Also the movie is great too. And PS, you missed both op1 and op2 of railgun S, the second season of toaru railgun. As well as the OP for the railgun ova.
Railgun and Index are 2 separate-ish series that play in the same universe. There are some overlaps but index focuses on the magical side of things and railgun on the science part
Toaru is such a big serie, there is various protagonists some who even having their own spinoff series but they are all conon they take place in the same world and time but on that characters perspective, we even got to see the same events happening but in other characters point of view
there is 3 main characters in index. the actual main character is the guy with spiky black hair, the GOAT with white hair more towards and in season 2 and then the 3rd guy in season 3 but it all still mainly focuses on touma the black haired guy. and then the coin flipping girl is a main heroine in index as well as main character of railgun because she uses those coins with her ability to make a railgun. this anime has 2 whole power systems and the world is fleshed out and as im sure you could tell, there is a LOT of characters so i'd suggest giving it a try at some point
Considering that the last two openings are just promotional material for the mobile game, the comment about it all happening in VR was actually somewhat fitting in a sort of roundabout way.
Nicely done. Beside the one outlandish guess, you got so much closely figured about the series, which I don’t think I’ve seen a reacter do for this series. It is a wonderful anime, and I believe you’d get damn into it.
This series is about science vs magic. The Japanese text at the beginning of the first opening means A Certain Magical Index. Toaru Majutsu no Index to be exact. The nun/priestess girl is named Index. And that's exactly what she is. An index- The one of the white-haired guy is from his spin-off manga. It's very very good. He is incredibly OP. He can easily throw skyscrapers at people. His ability is reflection. What you will love about the main guy is that his fists are rated E for everyone. Man, woman, don't matter. You're getting punched.
Misaka thinks anime reaction guy should react to all overlord openings and endings next, Misaka says with excitement. (Misaka is a toaru meme reference in the show)
The watch order: Index I > Railgun > Index II > > Index Movie > Railgun S > Index III > Accelerator > Railgun T You will know by the end of Index Season 1 if you wan to continue. And this was before the VR craze, so not that type of anime.
I'd actually watch Accelerator right after episode 20 of Index I, that's essentially where it picks up from. I'd also watch T right after the Tree Diagram Remnant Arc From Index II, and chronologically I believe Railgun actually starts first. In fact I'd just skip the sisters arc entirely from Index I because it's just way better done in Railgun S, so it would look like Railgun > Index I until the sisters arc > Railgun S > Finish Index I > Index II until the Daihasei Festival Arc > Railgun T > Finish Index II > Index Movie > Index III. That's a much more appropriate temporal sequence.
Easily my favourite anime series, though it's hard to get into, I dropped toaru majutso no index twice before I actually got into it. But after a while you realize 7 seasons is nowhere enough and it's a shame they didnt dedicate an entire studio just to churn out as much of this out as possible. There's a lot of index light novels unadapted still.
You missed Opening 7 (ua-cam.com/video/Oj5Z0AXmF6I/v-deo.html), Opening 8 (ua-cam.com/video/XX2L6RVWweE/v-deo.html), and OVA opening (ua-cam.com/video/_V1_SQmzANw/v-deo.html).
