For anybody else who may be struggling to determine why their audio is not being recorded, go to System Preferences > Security & Privacy > Microphone and make sure that QuickTime player is checked (which means it will have access). I followed the instructions in the video but was still not hearing ANY audio (the internal audio AND my mic) on the recordings until I went into the Security settings and checked that box for QuckTime. Thank you for the great video! I need to record a demo of some features for work and this will help me a lot!
THANK YOU!!! I am a teacher trying to quickly train up so I can offer classes that can be accessed in person and online, and I cannot tell you how much I appreciate this quick and handy guide that saved me HOURS of work. This is exactly what I needed to be able to do, and this was clear and easy to follow. I appreciated the short explanation of how it works so that I could adapt the settings for what I need and create a couple different aggregates (like for audio only recordings of just system sound). Again, super helpful. I've used a few of your videos now and so am subscribing and a new fan.
Thank you! Thank you! Very well explained in detail. I took the steps one by one and it worked without hassle. I would like to point out that in a newer version of the MacBook, instead of Built-In Output you may see MacBook Speaker, which is basically the same thing. Plus there are three versions of the BlackHole: 2ch, 16ch and 64ch that you may use as you wish. Again, that was truly helpful and I am going to check on your channel more often from now on. 👌🙏☺

Thank you so much for such a clear and easy-to-follow video! I am preparing for a saxophone "repertoire" exam for which I need to video my playing over the top of MP3 backing tracks, and all pieces must be recorded back-to-back in one recording, i.e. editing is not allowed. I was tearing my hair out trying to get a reasonable quality recording of the sax over the top of the backing played through speakers. The sax completely over-powered the backing but if I turned up the volume of the backing, I couldn't easily hear what I was playing! After Googling potential solutions, I came across your video which solved my problem within minutes! I can now play the backing tracks from iRehearse, listen to the backing through headphones, play the sax over the top, and record both the backing and sax in realtime using QuickTime Player! Absolutely perfect outcome. You are a star!

Hey, thanks for this tutorial. It has helped to screen record stuff with Audio - but is there a way to screen record with audio whilst wearing wireless earphones? Unfortunately when I use earphones the audio isn’t picking up when I screen record.
I figured out a way to do it with my airpods and it should work w/ wireless earphones as well! While you are editing your aggregate device, select your headphones instead of selecting built-in output. You then should be able to hear the audio through your earphones while screen recording!
hey, when i select the option screen record w/ Audio under Sound>output i stop hearing the sound of the video and nothing gets recorded either . any insights on what could cause that
Ooo, I solved it after one hour 🙃, So un-check inside of Screen Record w/ Audio blackhole & your build-in audio. And then check it again in a way build in output is first and blackhole stays under it. These is how it works for me with these plugin. It is great recording.
Different solution for me but it worked! UPDATE: I found a solution to my problem XD Looks like I just needed to give quicktime permission to use my microphone on security haha + need to set INPUT in sound settings to QuickTime Player Input That INPUT in the audio took me forever to figure out because he only mentioned the OUTPUT settings XD
I think I have the same issue, sometime the recording audio is just glitchy or broken up and totally can't use. Is there any one knows how to fix this or salvage the recording that have problem like this?
Endless trying to mute my mike while recording with QuickTime. Using blackhole until I thought of a Black Hole in a different sense. Until I found your video. THANK YOU!
After three apps, and multiple plugins, I think I may have a solution. It only took me 2 weeks into my lectures. Thank you for sharing. I will post again if I run into any issues.
Everything works perfectly, the only issue I’m having is that when I’m recording the screen with something playing (like a UA-cam song as you did) if I speak over it, when I listen to the registration, the volume of my voice is super low and the volume of the song is covering it, is it possible to adjust the volumes?
as soon as I change my audio output it stops and no video can play and as soon as I switch my output back to my headphones I can play and watch videos again.. Im trying to record audio coming from my headphones and also record my screen.. help

OH MY GOSH!!!!!! THANK YOU SO MUCH!!!!! I HAVE BEEN SEARCHING ON HOW TO DO THIS FOR MONTHS AND THANKS TO YOU I CAN FINALLY SCREEN RECORD WITH AUDIO!!! THANK YOU THANK YOU THANK YOU!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
Idid everything step by step but when i change output to screen record w/audio in Sound settings all of my yt and other videos that i would like to recort stop working. Any ideas?
Hi Tario - It’s me again, I just noticed that when I changed the Sound Output to “Screen Record w Audio - Aggregate Device” - It won’t let me play my video that I want to record. 🥺
Yeah I have this same issue. It's probably an intentional system to prevent people from illegally recording other peoples works. If you set your output to your mac's default output it should work again, but it's a shame that it does that because I would like to watch UA-cam while I have BlackHole enabled. It is sometimes a pain to switch between the two settings before and after recordings.
This video was GREAT! I watched another video before this one, and they had the Blackhole and Mac speakers "reversed" (Mac speakers were first in the output) which didn't work on my M2 MAX. This video fixed my issues, and now I can skip my Zoom meeting tomorrow and just record it. LUL
THANKS!!!! IMPORTANT FOR Big Sur USERS: Download Blackhole 2ch! And if you have an APOLLO TWIN controller and you want to use the headphones, select "universal Audio thunderbolt" under the "screen recording w/ audio" (only there! not under "quick time input")
This is such a lifesaver and thank you so much! Just want to let you know that it still works today (as long as the BlackHole option is not on top of the checked boxes in MIDI for both the output and input) and is such a relief after searching for a solution for over 3 hours!
I am just setting this up and the video is helping understand what is going on. However, I am also working with the Wiki link for BlackHole in their existential audio page for downloading and set up. They do recommend making sure the Built-in Output is on top of the list (Selected as the Master Device) and Drift Correction checked.
You're supposed to listen to the audio on your computer whiling recording. That's why in Audio Midi Setup, when you create Multi-Output Device, you want to make sure the 'Build-in Output' option is checked so you can listen to it on your headphone or built-in speaker.
If you've done exactly what he's done but you can't hear the audio, make sure that "Blackhole" isn't the first selected in both 'Quicktime player input' AND 'Screen recording with audio' Make sure that at the top of both checked, it is Built in mic / Built in output! (If it still is NOT working, make sure "Quicktime player input" has 'Drift connection' checked FOR BOTH Blackhole and you mic!
Noticed that the Master Device option changed for 'Screen Record w/ Audio' from 'BlackHole 16ch' (5:00) to 'Built-In Output' (5:03) - seems to have fixed my issues! Cheers mate!
When I add blackhole as my aggregated input none of the inputs are green. I think this might be the reason why there's no sound when recording internal audio on QT. How do I fix that?
I followed this tutorial, but when I pull up the Aggregate Input, all of the channels are red, and the Blackhole 16ch is red. I get no sound to record. What is the issue?
Thank you a whole lot man, I been trying to figure out why when I record the screen the audio wasn't there, and I have been watching other videos but wasn't able to get it done still, but I watched your video step by step and now I have both the video and the sound together. Thanks a whole lot man, may the GOOD LORD bless you in all your endeavors.
I tried doing this but It didn't work, when I selected the "Screen Recording w/ Audio the audio on my computer didn't work even though I selected built in output. Sorry for the "negative" comment.
Dre AKBAD Thornton ye, I tried everything, you g it just works for some and not for others, so I downloaded this app called capto and that isn’t even working, I guess I am just cursed when it comes to recording a screen 😕
It should definitely work, just needs more tinkering. Remember to do 3 things when you record internal audio using Quicktime screen recording in order: (1.) Go to Sound Preferences > Ensure that Input = Input Aggregator, and Ensure that Output = Output Aggregator (i.e. the aggregators that you made which includes the Blackhole 16ch ticked). (2.) In Quicktime settings, make sure that your Microphone = Input Aggregator. Begin screen record. Screen recording with internal audio should be working now with UA-cam videos, or stuff on your local computer But if you want this to work in a video conferencing call, you have to go to the Video Conferencing's (e.g. Skype or Zoom's) audio/video settings and change the Speaker to your Output Aggregator (your microphone should still be your regular one, not the input aggregator one). (3.) After you have finished recording, make sure to go back to Sound Preferences > and put the settings back into your non-Aggregator input and non-aggregator output and you should be able to hear sound again. Let me know if this doesn't help though. But yeah, the 3 steps above in the order that it's written in should work with just about anything you're trying to screen record w/audio on your computer. Good luck!
MAGLAYA thank you so much for the advice, sadly I did try that and did some tinkering around and still nothing seemed to work, even though I selected multiple outputs when I made the custom thing for the output, my computer sound still never worked...
I struggled, because it just wouldn't work. But then I went back to security settings and found out that Quicktime didn't have access to microphone. That solved the whole problem. So maybe useful for someone else. System Preferences > Security & Privacy > Privacy > Microphone (left menu) > tik the Quicktime box.
Pause the video in the places where he mentions a new task...especially if he has some subtitles...and then take a screenshot at each one. then all you have to do is slowly go thru all your screenshots and you wont miss any steps...
Brilliant! It worked for me second round using your video instructions. It was easy to follow! Thank you and keep more tips/videos coming! From Los Angeles

Hi, and thank you. At 4:15 you mention that I should select Built in Audio as my output...but if I'm using an interface shouldn't I use that instead, like on my Clarett (headphones or speaker option)? Thanks again
Yes, if you have audio interface, just choose your interface instead. I also made a video that includes using audio interface, give it a try: ua-cam.com/video/50BOaOmmOLY/v-deo.html
I appreciate your help. That pretty much solved everything. I could only organise the recording levels via Audio-MIDI-Setup > Built-in Output.. Not sure why but it made the audio levels of both internal audio and microphone more even. I sent a test email of the test mov and it worked. SO i am very thankful for your help!!
Great video - here's a couple things from some common comments below as well as some of my findings (with a question should you get to it) There is no need to open system pref..... just click the speaker symbol in the menu bar (top right) of your Mac and you can easily change sound outputs. If you dont see one, go to System Pref ---> Sound ----> and tick "show volume in menu bar. That will save the hassle of needing to switch the output when recording and not recording.
Not sure where the other half of my message went, but in terms of set up, why do we need to create a Multi-Device output? 2 things; 1. While screen recording and the System Sound set to the Multi-Device output, you can no longer control the sound with the Mac keys. 2. If I leave my "headphones" or Internal Speakers selected, I am still able to hear everything from the recording AND turn down the audio with the Mac Keys if needed. Of course, this turns down the audio being recorded as well. Anyone else notice this?
I've listened and tried to follow other UA-cams explaining this and there is always a problem - but I have a very new MBP and this great much appreciated

You're very welcome!
holy moly this actually worked, i've been trying to find a solution to this problem for years, thanks so much :)
You are welcome!
hey, when i select the option screen record w/ Audio under Sound>output i stop hearing the sound of the video and nothing gets recorded either . any insights on what could cause that
had the same experience.
same
Same in my studio...did you Karan, Hemp & Ren solved these already?
Ooo, I solved it after one hour 🙃, So un-check inside of Screen Record w/ Audio blackhole & your build-in audio. And then check it again in a way build in output is first and blackhole stays under it. These is how it works for me with these plugin. It is great recording.
Different solution for me but it worked!
UPDATE: I found a solution to my problem XD Looks like I just needed to give quicktime permission to use my microphone on security haha + need to set INPUT in sound settings to QuickTime Player Input
That INPUT in the audio took me forever to figure out because he only mentioned the OUTPUT settings XD
When I use it, why does my audio makes a glitchy noise, like my audio is making a wierd noice when you talk.
I think I have the same issue, sometime the recording audio is just glitchy or broken up and totally can't use. Is there any one knows how to fix this or salvage the recording that have problem like this?
not really a fix but you could use audacity to record your audio separately and then sync it up in imovie
@@TopBeatsEDM try changing the sample rate in midi settings for blackhole- I did that and it fixed it
to expand on this- make sure both sample rates of the new midi audios match :)

Also want to know this!

It worked! (fyi, I have the newer macOS Big Sur v11.1)
I'm able to screen record with only internal audio now since I didn't want any ambient room noise.
Love your super thorough description section of the video with links to your other best videos, love how you put the timestamps in multiple places, loved how you did troubleshooting, loved how you gave background technical info on many steps, love how you made an updated version of the video since last time. Love how you chose some quality open source software. Reallly appreciate that. Subscribed! Best of luck!
You made my day! :)

Any ideas?
yeah the same happens to me, would love to know how to change that:)
I just made a video on how to get the same result with OBS, give this a shot: ua-cam.com/video/50BOaOmmOLY/v-deo.html
It is sometimes a pain to switch between the two settings before and after recordings.
give this a shot: ua-cam.com/video/50BOaOmmOLY/v-deo.html
This video was GREAT! I watched another video before this one, and they had the Blackhole and Mac speakers "reversed" (Mac speakers were first in the output) which didn't work on my M2 MAX. This video fixed my issues, and now I can skip my Zoom meeting tomorrow and just record it. LUL
Good thing I was able to come across this video. Great tutorial from start to finish of the process.
Enjoy!
Thank you so much for doing this tutorial! You explained the whole thing so well, and everything is working! ☺️ 🙌🏻🤘🏻
You're very welcome!
Works with Big Sur. Only change is that Built in Output was updated to External Headphones
Awesome! Thanks for the note!

THANKS!!!! IMPORTANT FOR Big Sur USERS: Download Blackhole 2ch!
And if you have an APOLLO TWIN controller and you want to use the headphones, select "universal Audio thunderbolt" under the "screen recording w/ audio" (only there! not under "quick time input")
Thanks for the tip Ariel!
I have some trouble. After I create multi-output devices I don’t have the option “built in output” do you know what can i do

@@Sweetie0325canflyy im so happy for you! it was hell for me!

Thank you so much! I had to download a video for a project quickly and could not figure it out. You're a lifesaver!
This is such a lifesaver and thank you so much! Just want to let you know that it still works today (as long as the BlackHole option is not on top of the checked boxes in MIDI for both the output and input) and is such a relief after searching for a solution for over 3 hours!
Glad it helped!
I am just setting this up and the video is helping understand what is going on. However, I am also working with the Wiki link for BlackHole in their existential audio page for downloading and set up. They do recommend making sure the Built-in Output is on top of the list (Selected as the Master Device) and Drift Correction checked.
When I went into the setting to select the Built-In-Audio I don't have It.
I don't have it either but when I selected "Mac Book Pro Speakers" and "External Headphones" in addition to "Black Hole" it works. Hope that helps.
@@surfacing373 Thanks
@@surfacing373 i dont see 'external headphones' in the speakers
Ellie Shada same as here.
Also is there a way where I can still listen to the audio on my computer whilst quicktime is recording?
You're supposed to listen to the audio on your computer whiling recording. That's why in Audio Midi Setup, when you create Multi-Output Device, you want to make sure the 'Build-in Output' option is checked so you can listen to it on your headphone or built-in speaker.
Tario Productions kaaaæ
Tario Productions I have done this but am still unable to get sound on my Mac book. How do I fix it please?
If you've done exactly what he's done but you can't hear the audio, make sure that "Blackhole" isn't the first selected in both 'Quicktime player input' AND 'Screen recording with audio' Make sure that at the top of both checked, it is Built in mic / Built in output! (If it still is NOT working, make sure "Quicktime player input" has 'Drift connection' checked FOR BOTH Blackhole and you mic!
Thank you for the tip Savannah!
Thanks so much, I was going nuts and your comment finally got it to work.
I'm shocked how easy the process was, it works perfectly!
Thank you!
Noticed that the Master Device option changed for 'Screen Record w/ Audio' from 'BlackHole 16ch' (5:00) to 'Built-In Output' (5:03) - seems to have fixed my issues!

It work for Me I dont know what u did Wrong
This was the one step I was missing! Thank you for posting this!

Hi, and thank you.
At 4:15 you mention that I should select Built in Audio as my output...but if I'm using an interface shouldn't I use that instead, like on my Clarett (headphones or speaker option)?

Yes, if you have audio interface, just choose your interface instead. I also made a video that includes using audio interface, give it a try: ua-cam.com/video/50BOaOmmOLY/v-deo.html
I appreciate your help. That pretty much solved everything. I could only organise the recording levels via Audio-MIDI-Setup > Built-in Output.. Great video and solved my problem. Thank you and happy holidays from Arctic Circle!
Happy holidays!
After so many failed attempts and crappy tutorials I finally got to one that actually WORKS 😭 👍 Thank you very much bro. I appreciate it!
Great to hear!
Great video - here's a couple things from some common comments below as well as some of my findings (with a question should you get to it)
There is no need to open system pref..... just click the speaker symbol in the menu bar (top right) of your Mac and you can easily change sound outputs. If you dont see one, go to System Pref ---> Sound ----> and tick "show volume in menu bar. That will save the hassle of needing to switch the output when recording and not recording.
Not sure where the other half of my message went, but in terms of set up, why do we need to create a Multi-Device output? 2 things;
Thank you for explaining how it works/what each step does for the whole process!!!
