I see a fat bird with a worm in its beak! I love the difference between the heartwood and the sapwood. The wood type is lovely, and it’s different to your usual work but just as beautiful. A master at whatever form you choose. Take care of yourself and stay warm in that weather.
Love this bowl. Making the bowl smaller on the bottom wastes the same amount of wood, just more on the outside and less on the inside 😂 how ever there is less space on the inside.😮 I say you made the best choice. I love it.
Wonderful Phil. You inspired me to take up woodturning when we were locked up during the covid nonsense. It is wonderful to see that you are still creating masterpieces. Because that is what they are, with a little help from nature.........
Phil beautiful bowl and beautiful colors I still like the bigger diameter bottom bowls that you usually do but good for you for trying something new thanks for another AWSOME video Terry
Bradford pears are beautiful trees but have a relatively short lifespan. They grow amazingly fast and become quite brittle as a result. As such, in windstorms they often feed on mirrors of trucks parked within reach of their falling limbs. Unfortunately, I used to feed mine regularly until I got smart and cut it down. I miss the beautiful white flowers each spring, though, and had no idea how pretty the wood would be. You did a wonderful job of coaxing a lovely bowl from the blank. Thanks, Phil!
That’s a beauty, Phil! I really like the shape, though I understand your discomfort about wasting wood. The colors and bark are great too! One of my favorites of yours. 😊
An awesome piece. I see the ant eater. And If you look at it the other side I see a bear or other animal the bark inclusion is the SMILE . Keep up the amazing work. 👽
Good Afternoon, I do like those colors so does my wife, your lucky to get some. I had to sneak out that one ...lol got plenty still. But that is spalting the tree was sick perhaps from me moving it at about a year old in 1976. I showed a piece of it to someone in the know and they said " that tree had some real issues " still a great bowl. Stay safe and be well. Dennis 8:518:51
It's never a 'waste of time' watching you turn any old piece of wood into a thing of beauty Phil. It is a delightful, yes a stunning bowl. I totally understand you not wanting to 'waste ' wood when you turn but, as I have said many times before that it is good to work outside of ones 'comfort zone' occasionally, & believe me, you have turned a beautiful bowl Phil. The colours are stunning right from the bark to the heartwood & I love what appears to be the 'outlining of the colour changes. Keep safe, healthy & warm during your Winter. Cheers, Don from South Aust.
The colors remind me of the Grand Canyon. One way I see a bird with a seed in its mouth, turn it upside down I see a bear where you see a fat ant eater. In the sap wood I imagine etchings by the natives who lived there years ago. I love finding pictures in wood. Call me crazy but I think I’m in good company.😊
Cool job Phil.... gorgeous colours, inside is an early Jim Henson Sock Puppet... Toad and a fly....perfect balance of warmth and skill. There is no wasted wood here just a decision whether the volume is visualised on the inside or the outside . The spalting clouds are really interesting, as is the spalting line between hart and soft ....really makes this piece super distinctive. SUPER JOB AND AS USUAL THANKS SO MUCH FOR SHARING.
Such a beautiful piece Phil. As always you get to make an example of how to get the piece of wood that you're working with right. Happy turning my friend 😊
I loved the wood before you turned it. Wow the result is uniquely stunning! The color and bark are so beautiful and it has a lovely shape. You out did yourself with this bowl.
Phil I think the shape you gave it show off all the features the piece has to offer. Especially the line created by the heart wood and the sap wood. And the dark line between is topping on the cake. So I like it a lot! Keep up the great work my friend, Gary
Hi Phil, love this piece, it looks so smooth, and shiney, and the color variation is like a 2 tone paint job. I though the little dark crack in the inside, looked like some kind of arcade game dragon. Thanks for showing us!
What a delightful little gem of a bowl. For what it is worth, I think this illustrates the value of listening to your own woodturning instincts, and expressing your own style. I like the bowl now, but I think that I liked it just a smidgen more when it had those straighter, taller sides. The contrast between the heartwood and the sapwood gave it a sort of 'pinto pony' appearance, which I found most charming. Many thanks to you, and to Dennis. (No offense to Dave, whose own sense of woodturning style in impeccable, I'm sure.)
It's probably good for us to get out of our comfort zone now and again. I don't think you could turn a bad piece if you tried. Great job that brought this best the wood had to offer. Thanks for sharing.
Just amazing how nature works, the colours and lines and of course the bark is really cool, I like how you tapered it up. Nice job Phil. All the best to you. Regards Jim
Woo hoo! What a cool bowl. And an inspiration. I got my hands on a small stack of Bradford pear a while back and its been drying out. Can't wait to lay a gouge against it. Thanks Phil!
Beautiful colors that contrast nicely with each other and the bark. I have turned pear; it's wonderful. It is also very hard. One of my more useful pieces is a mallet I made a few years ago. It's perfect for hammering a spur center into end grain. Pear also makes great tool handles since it's very strong. None of mine has flashy grain like cherry but it still makes a very handsome turning.
Nothing plain about this bowl, gorgeous colors, grain and bark! I agree about turning away the extra wood at the base, it is a shame but it is beautiful anyway. 💖👌 Can’t say that I see a chubby anteater but I do see the side view of a bird head with beak and its upper body. Turned upside down it looks like the back of a cat’s head with a few tufts of hair between two ears. Maybe too many tostitos and spicy salsa con queso for supper affecting my imagination! 😆 Lovely piece but from now on, you do what you prefer, friends will understand! 💕
That is hilarious, I've never been accused of having an imagination, but that's the first thing I thought I f when you asked what we may have seen in there.
BEAUTIFUL.
Thank you, Shirley! 😄
This is the prettiest you've done that I've seen 👏
It's a special piece of wood for sure, Bobbie, thank you! 😀
Very pretty bowl. I love the dark bark and the dark line between the sapwood and the heartwood. I also see a smiling dolphin.
Thanks, I see him too! 😀 He's upside down from my anteater.
I see a fat bird with a worm in its beak! I love the difference between the heartwood and the sapwood. The wood type is lovely, and it’s different to your usual work but just as beautiful. A master at whatever form you choose. Take care of yourself and stay warm in that weather.
Thank you, Karen! 😀 I see the bird and worm! It's getting colder, now. 38° when I woke up this morning. Bummer! LOL!
Lovely 🎉
Thank you! Glad you like it! 😀
Another Beautiful bowl, thanks for revealing the inner beauty of the wood and letting God's handy work show.
Thank you, Bob! 😀
That's lovely wonderful finish reminds me of Australia and two holidays I had 10 years ago
😀
I think we have very similar tastes. I turn a lot of natural / live edge and always enjoy watching yours.
It's fun to see what others are turning! 👍
The shape of the bowl is classic. Sap wood contrast is beautiful. I see the Continent of Antarctica. Perfection in turning. 🌍
Thanks! I like the shape and the wood color contrast. 😀
Love this bowl. Making the bowl smaller on the bottom wastes the same amount of wood, just more on the outside and less on the inside 😂 how ever there is less space on the inside.😮 I say you made the best choice. I love it.
Thanks, Arland! 😀
Wonderful Phil. You inspired me to take up woodturning when we were locked up during the covid nonsense. It is wonderful to see that you are still creating masterpieces. Because that is what they are, with a little help from nature.........
Thank you so much, Barry! Enjoy your new hobby! 😀
What a stunning piece of wood Phil. Really lovely colours. You did a beautiful job on it. Looking like a big fat dolphin to me. 👍🏴
The dolphin is upside down from my anteater! 😀
Another work of art, Phil. You really are a Master at Wood Turning..
Am I the only one that sees a Dolphins Head on the inside?
A couple other mentions of dolphins, Cliff! 😀
I thought I saw a dolphin, especially with the mouth. Beautiful Phil!
For me, the dolphin is upside down from my anteater. I should have mentioned him cause he sure is there! Thank you! 😀
Great piece of wood. As usual a great tuned and finishing process
Thanks for the kind words! 😀
Definitely not a waste of anything. You have revealed the beauty within. 😍 I can see Flipper, heading for another adventure 😂
Thanks! I'm glad you like the way it turned out! 😀
That’s beautiful Phil ❤️

Thank you, Terry! 😀
Wow Phil, this one is exceptionally beautiful.
Thanks, I really like the way it turned out! 😀

That’s a beauty, Phil! I really like the shape, though I understand your discomfort about wasting wood. The colors and bark are great too! One of my favorites of yours. 😊
I'm glad you like it, thank you, Marcia! 😀
The head of a bird. Super. Cool
Thank you! 😀
An awesome piece. I see the ant eater. And If you look at it the other side I see a bear or other animal the bark inclusion is the SMILE . Keep up the amazing work. 👽
Thanks! 😀
Lovely contrasting colours, Phil. Thanks for stepping outside your comfort zone, as you say, “ for all to see.”
It’s nice to get out of my rut, isn’t it? 😀
its more than beautiful but you know that you cant please everyone so you got to please yourself which i think you did thank you
Yes, I'm pretty happy with it, Debra! 😀
I like it!
😀
That is one beautiful looking bowl Phil. U always do such a wonderful job. Thx and take care.
I appreciate that, thanks! 😀

Thanks for sneaking it out for me, Dennis, I'm so grateful and amazed by the color! 😀

Very well done Phil 👍. Beautiful looking little bowl. Love the contrast between the heart and sap wood. Thanks for sharing and take care.
Thank you, Scott! 😀

I'm glad you're seeing the beauty in wood, Betsy! 😀

I like this a lot Phil.
Maybe not how you would normally turn it but as I said I like it a lot.
Take care my friend.
Cheers, Huw
Thank you, Huw! Hard to go wrong with a piece like this! 😀
That line between heart and sap wood is striking! Really nice bowl.
Agree! 😀
The bowl is beautiful. I don't see the need for a narrow bottom --- guess that's personal preference. Have a great weekend. 😊
Thank you, Mary, you too! 😀
another fine job, you do what you want , let your son do what he wants to do.
😀
Such a beautiful piece Phil. As always you get to make an example of how to get the piece of wood that you're working with right. Happy turning my friend 😊
Thank you, Edward! 😀
Looks great to me! I've never turned any Bradford pear, but it looks like it's a good wood to turn. THNX
Thanks, glad you like it! 😀
Love the different colors and the shape. I’d be happy to display any of these little bowls. ❤
Thanks, Vickie! 😀
The taper is quite dramatic given where it started, but definitely not a mistake! Excellent as usual.
It was a challenge, but I'm happy with the result! 😀
Great looking bowl. Love the different color changes. I thought I heard rain drops a few minutes ago. Lol. Stay dry and warm and enjoy your weekend
😀
Phil I absolutely love that live edge bowl and the colours are amazing , I particularly love the sap wood, not often you get it that thick. Great job.
Glad you like it 😀
The shading of colors are beautiful. I saw a face on the one side. Another beautiful piece, Phil. ❤
Thanks, Jane! 😀
Awesome bowl, Phil! Love the contrast in the grain!
Thanks, Billy! 😀
That wood looks very smooth after turning. Beautiful colors. 😊
You're right! It's a special piece for sure. 😀
Those colours are beautiful, Phil, and you really show them off with this shape. Toni and I love this one.
Yay, thanks! 😀
I loved the wood before you turned it. Wow the result is uniquely stunning! The color and bark are so beautiful and it has a lovely shape. You out did yourself with this bowl.

😀
Wow.. that’s a real beauty. Magnificent colors and the normal Phil stamp on it
Thanks, Erik! 😀
Phil I think the shape you gave it show off all the features the piece has to offer. Especially the line created by the heart wood and the sap wood. And the dark line between is topping on the cake.
So I like it a lot!

Absolutely gorgeous, Uncle Phil ❣️

Hi Phil, love this piece, it looks so smooth, and shiney, and the color variation is like a 2 tone paint job. I though the little dark crack in the inside, looked like some kind of arcade game dragon. Thanks for showing us!
Haha, you've got dragons on your mind! 😀
Just beautiful❤️👍
Thank you, Addie! 😀
I see a map inside and it’s beautiful
The Ponderosa, Sheila! 😀

Enjoy, Steve! 😀
I love turning Bradford. Always has interesting grain and color. Next time I take one down Ill try and send you a crotch section.
😀
Thumbs up on the recess bottom. You made the bottom perfect. I have Bradford pear from my neighbors tree and it's one of my favorite woods to turn.
Thanks, Dennis! 😀
