No let’s talk about it. I’m obsessed with this performance. She navigates so many vocal textures. And really astounding performance given that she’s performed it literal thousands of times and yet this is the performance of it I keep coming back to 20+ years in
Brandi is the best singer songwriter of this generation. Her story is so inspiring. And she is an amazing person
She didn’t write this song, however….
Brandi’s voice just gets better every year! I’ve been a fan for about 18 years. I miss the old days of seeing her perform at small intimate venues, but am thrilled for her success! She’s worked hard for a VERY long time. She’s such a gem inside and out!
Brandi is for me, one of the greatest voices of the world!

I discovered her because she opened for My Morning Jacket at Red Rocks (and played a few songs with them). It was...transcendent is an understatement...I've discovered so many great bands as an opener - Lord Huron, Lake Street Dive, Dr. Dog, Walk the Moon, Sylvan Esso....it goes on and on. Very grateful 🥰

You have GOT to react to Brandi singing The Joke at the Grammys - which she took home at least one of her 10. It’s been told that she was so nervous, being the first time performing there, so she fixed her eyes on one smiling, standing person-Janelle Monet. And just sang her heart out. It’s one of the best Grammy performances ever (imho). Rumor is that the whole room was buzzing with her performance. Great reaction and analysis!💜

Wonderful analysis (as always!) Jenn! When you talked about her *performance* of "smile that's on my mouth, hiding the words that won't come out" (about 11:40) it suddenly made it clear to me...she isn't just singing a song, or even just singing her song. She's performing her story. It's the difference between a merely sad song, and a singer that makes you cry. Brandi is a singer that makes me cry. Both this song and The Joke have that effect on me, and thanks to you, I know why. [ps. I'd love to see your analysis of The Joke (Live at the 61st Grammys is probably the best)].

I am a huge Brandi Carlile fan and really enjoyed your comments. I met you at a UVIP session with Home Free while you were in the US and made you take a photo with me. I encourage you to review Brandi's 2019 performance of The Joke. It was one of the best grammy performances of all time. Her live concerts are just that great. More Brandi, please!

They're more vocal analysis rather than a mere reaction which is more along the lines "ooh", "wah" and "wow".
Take a look at the Brandi Carlile pin drop tour documentary (available on UA-cam). It's about eight years ago, and demonstrates exactly how good Brandi and the Hanseroths are as vocalists.

Liked watching your analysis. After adoring her for 16 years I promise you she is absolutely intentional with her vocal choices, is not at all straining her voice here and her vocal range is insane. Her and the twins story telling is pretty phenomenal. Couldn’t love them more.
The song was actually written by the Hanseroth twins (guitar and bass players in the band)
