Potting Up Peppers Pro Tips & Getting Them Ready for Transplanting

  • We're with Jeff today to talk PEPPERS, especially potting them up and getting them ready for life outside.
    1:07 Potting Up vs Transplanting
    It's still fairly early in the year here, so nighttime temps are still chilly here in San Diego. Later in the year, we can skip this step, but we want to pot these up rather than put them in the ground now.
    Shop all pepper seeds: sandiegoseedcompany.com/produ...
    Even at this size, though, we're seeing early signs of the plant getting root bound. By potting up, we're buying time. A couple notes on potting up:
    -You can bury some of the stem - like tomatoes - which will then send out roots.
    -Peppers don't like their roots disturbed so don't mess with them too much unless if it's really root bound.
    -Water your plants in! You don't want to overdo it, especially with peppers.
    -You don't need to fill your entire container with soil; it can be close, but leave some room for water.
    -At this stage of the plant, you can remove flowers because the plant isn't large enough to grow those as well as the root system & foliage.

    I'm growing bell peppers, jalapeño and poblano. I don't like growing indoors so I don't use grow lights or heating mats. For my bell peppers to sprout I move them from one area to another in my kitchen where it is warm...top of coffee pot first thing in the morning, then they move to the top of the toaster oven, then to the stove top😂 it works every year. Once sprouted I leave them outside. Our overnight Temps rarely get too cold.

    I have a pepper ally on the side of my house. I love the challenge of getting them from seed to transplant. I have some that are 3-4 years old. I’m lucky that I can overwinter them outside in Tucson.

    Yes. I started way more and I have tons to give away lol. I even put one extra seed in each cell just to make sure I germ enough. I’ll snip the worse of the two. I do this with almost all my plants. Don’t want to lose out on the time.

    Also, on watering, if you go to point of drooping leaves with the pepper plants, you stress them to point of distress, calling pests over, and you push plants into survival mode rather then focus on growth and pepper production. They flower too early.
    I’ve see from moist soil like tomato plants pushes huge growth to plants and production.

    From what I heard, pinching will make the plant redirect its energy to the side shoots making it bushier, but will set it back growth to a couple of weeks.

    I'm growing Hatch, Sweet Carmen, Big Jim, Habanada, Jimmy Nardello, Ajvarski, Nadapeno, Patchwork, Shishito, Fresno Flaming Flare, and new for this year is Pueblo Colorado Green Chilies. Zone 10b, started from seed Jan 15th under lights and potted up into 3" pots that fit 18 in a 10x20. They are almost 2' tall and begging to go into the ground but the beets aren't ready yet. I started them in EB Stone's recipe 420 soil and feed them a weak dose of EB Stone kelp and fish fertilizer.

    I’m growing about 20+ pepper varieties.. from reapers to Bells, they are my hobby, I’m in the north we don’t have a long growing season.. so I start my super hots in January and a heat mat is a must for super hots.
    As Far as pinching the tops off I only do that if they are particularly leggy it seems to help strengthen the main stems. But it will slow progress so caution if you’re like me and have have a short season.
    Peppers roots are quite resilient so if the root ball is very tight don’t be afraid to give them a gentle massage before up potting.
    Peppers enjoy a lot of daylight so inside have light on 16 hours on and 8 hours off.

    Video on cross pollination please! Not sure if I should grow just one type to avoid this?

    • @SanDiegoSeedCompany
      @SanDiegoSeedCompany  Рік тому +3

      Cross pollination does not affect that year's crop, only the genetics of the mother plant create the pepper (no the polen) BUT, if you save those seeds and plant them next year, then you're dealing with a mixture of both mom and dad genes, so you could get a variation on next year's crop.

    I always start mine in the wet paper towel and baggie in a warm place. If they germinate, then they get a pot of soil.
    I don't like wasting soil and I don't like thinning (killing) my seedlings.
    This year I'm doing California Wonder, Lilac Bell and Jigsaw (hot) peppers.
    Good video. Could you do one that explains cross-pollination? Specifically, how much distance is needed to keep the seed true.

    Jeff, from personal research and knowledge, burying pepper plants like you would tomato, would damage or kill the pepper plants. Reason, there are not lots of hair fibers to pepper plants like tomato. You actually weaken the pepper stem burning past initial ground level.

    • @yvonneellefson
      @yvonneellefson Рік тому +4

      One good reason is what Jeff was talking about at 6:29 with the soil getting water logged. When the seedlings are very small I've noticed it's more likely they aren't using that water and it's not evaporating fast enough so there is a greater risk of damping off, etc. You might wonder then about seedlings out in nature but in that case there is a ton of exposed surface area above and soil below to help wick away water to drier areas unlike pots.
