@@PodcastageThanks for video, i remember use your video about obs before to set my audio setting, but i can't find it on your channel maybe i forget the title, this new video really help when i forget the settings, now i can find it just by search on your channel by typing obs
You have been helping us with various problems for so many years and I would like to say thank you for that. Keep going while you still can and have fun with it. You are my number 1 source when it comes to audio and especially microphones. ❤👍😉
I have literally been try to fix this for a week. I bought another set of Astros, as I thought it was a mic issue. It was only malfunctioning with my Astros. My cheaper mic would work fine, but I don't like it. Now this has my Astros sounding perfect on the OBS recordings. Thank you!!
I'VE NEVER KNOWN THAT YOU CAN RIGHT CLICK THE VOLUME SLIDER TO CHANGE IT TO DECIBELS! My jaw dropped that for many years that I've been breathing, I just knew about that fact. I know. But setting that sucker to 0db, and then setting my mic just from the mic's gain dial really changed the game for me. You did it again, Bandrew, and thank you so much for making this video. This really helps me. I'm still using my Fifine K688 and after setting it correctly, noise is very low, and I tested my audios from whispering to screaming, no clipping anymore!
Thank you! 🙏 I appreciate it, my razer seiren x mic kept clipping and you helped me fix it! Used step 1.2 for anyone looking to fix this and it worked!
WOW... WOW... SUPER WOW!!! BANDREW TO THE RESCUE!!! This was amazingly useful information. I've been chasing my tail for 3 months, TRYING & FAILING to figure out how to do this. I was determined to get it right and refused to give up. THEN, I FOUND THIS VIDEO! I want you to know how much I appreciate you taking the time to share how to set the mic level. I've had brief moments where I liked the outcome I achieved. Then, I was unable to consistently produce/reproduce them. There were small places where the audio sounded harsh, surrounded by a nice sounding voice. I now know it's the clipping. Most importantly, I now have the solution to correct it because you shared it.
I've been dealing with mic issues for a long time and this was SUPER helpful! I appreciate the simple explanations. This helped me understand what I was doing wrong, instead of just copying settings and not having things work.
I have always watched your and Curtis Judd's videos for guidance and information. BUT THIS VIDEO REALLY ANSWERED MY LONG STANDING QUERY - "What does Level =100% mean on Windows?". In the last years, I have spent endless hours searching for the 0.0dB level - but never found out. My assumption, all through, was that 100% = 0.0dB point - and, so, my settings have been off the mark - by a whopping, un-necessary, gain of +30dB. And, today I came to know that there indeed is an official 0.0dB, close to the 50%! My pre-amp is now set optimally - with a consequent reduction in noise too - thanks!
I've been using in every audio workflow I do as an editor ever since I saw your original video on the second channel. Absolutely brilliant solution that's so obvious it's almost painful I never thought to do it. The education you provide for free is astounding.
I've watched 10+ videos over the span of days and this is the only one that helped. I have a gain knob on my yeti and I had my mic volume up in the volume mixer. Finally fixed my issue. Thank you so much!! ❤
The lifechanger we didn't know existed. Just one right click and you can see gain in Db... For years I thought that 0 Db is around 50% in Windows, and 0% is something like -20 Db thus I never used it... Now it turns out that 0% is 0 Db with my mic. And now it doesn't clip. I went to hell and back only to find out that I couldn't fix this issue and the mic was cheap. Now the problem is solved after all these years. I can't believe it was this simple
Heyyyyyyyyy - I learned something new! Right Click and change to decibels instead of percentage. How on earth did you figure that one out? Been using Windows / audio for 25 years and never knew that one! Haha! You rock, Bandrew :)
I dont know how i stumbled upon this after DAYS of searching. I was legit gon return my Razer Seiren Mini after being so disappointed. But then this literally saved it, I am a sports broadcaster/commentator and do high octane commentary so I am generally very loud. I thought the seiren mini could not handle it and was this close to emptying my wallet on a sennheiser or an audio technica but THIS ❤. Now it works like a charm. Bless you brother bless you
omg you are a life saver!!! i I never knew I could see my windows microphone boost in dB!!!! and now i sound great in my videos without any filters thank you
Dude ty so much for this. I thought I was going insane, I invested in a Shure SM7B and for so long I could not figure out why it was sounding so bad whenever I streamed. It sounds so much better now.
I knew at first glance he knew what he was talking about (all them damn mics in the background) but I didn't think this video would completely solve my problem. I finally found a video with someone who's using the same mic as me so I can just COPY THE SETTINGS
Dude thank you!!! I had no idea you could add digital gain with an OBS plug in, or add a limiter like that. For years I've been frustrated because my audio was too quiet, but if I turned it up I would get clipping. I just threw in the towel and was accepting some clipping. This seems to finally be my solution for louder audio with no clipping. Thank you, my youtube videos and streams should be much improved now.
I’ve been experimenting for years now, this absolutely sums up what I’ve been not only experiencing but what I’ve had to work around using a Behringer usb to a blue yeti to eventually buying an MV7+ thinking it would solve all my issues. The detail and explain actions given are phenomenal and pretty much gives me a better understanding on what the hell is going on. Like clipping before hitting red because the microphone isn’t staged properly. It seems like very few people ever suggest -12 to -20 peaks, I’m not sure if that’s common within music equipment or anything but it seems to be a solid technique. I know this upload is about a month old already but I hope you get to see this just to see I greatly appreciate this and you’ve taught me something I’ve been cracking at for years.
So, I have been streaming on Twitch for about three years and I installed the reaper VST plugins and have a noise gate, compressor, EQ, spectral denoise from them as well as the gain and noise suppression filters native to OBS. The Reaper plugins are awesome. Highly recommend!
Thank you so much for this. I was so confused as to why my HyperX Quadcast S sounded distorted when I raised my voice even after setting up OBS and having the gain on the microphone turned down to various levels. Windows had the mic boosted by 5 extra dbs. No wonder I couldn't fix it with all my filters and various hours of testing / troubleshooting in OBS, lol 😂
Awesome settings! Initially my hyperx solocast mic was extremely muffled and sounded nothing like your review video on OBS. These settings were great and got me pretty close
We appreciate you buddy. Your expertise and ability to break this complex topic into understandable terms is so valuable to a lot of people. Keep it up!
Very nice and helpful vid. Now I'd really appreciate a vid showing how to do live compressor/limiting on the computer, so you can sound well both in OBS and f.e. Discord.
This is great, I need to compare this to my current setting, I am hearing impaired, so it's challenging to know how my voice is when most people tell me, "it's fine." Not only am I using OBS Studio, but I'm using Elgato Wave Link. So there is another layer there.
Bandrew. Thank you for this straightrforward tutorial and the poor victims that I play video games with because I yell/scream at the slightest moment of pressure I'm in. They can now put my volume above 60% in Discord. I extrapolated this tutorial with Voicemeeter Banana.

There are many guides like this, but I have only seen one before (that wasn't even a guide) that changes the Windows Sound Settings to dB instead of percentage... That trick alone makes this the absolute best guide to start with, that I have seen yet. If 0 dB is not 100%, everyone makes this mistake.
Hi, thank you for what you do. What do you think about adding Noise Suppression, 3-Band EQ, and Expander within OBS? I've seen some tutorials suggesting that. I've seen this order of operations for the Audio Filters: Gain Noise Suppression 3-Band EQ Expander Compressor Limiter
Thanks for the video. It was really informative. I've tried adjusting the gain in Windows settings like you suggested and noticed the slider only goes between +16Db and +31Db. Do you know what would be the right setting there? Using a Blue Yeti like the one you used in the video. No other mics on my system are doing it, just the Yeti.
If you're using OBS to check your gain, make sure you check before downmixing to mono as you lose 6 dB in the downmixing process and you'll wind up setting your mic louder than you should.
Does the order of the filters in OBS have any effect on the final output? Also, would you recommend to do this or something similar to other audio sources (like programs on the computer or gaming consoles through a capturer card?
Darn it, I’ve missed a massive opportunity here. I should have added synth wave background music, recorded the entire thing to VHS and sold it for 3 easy payments of $19.99 on a late night infomercial.
Gonna have to go through this video in a bit again. I have been video pofcasting with Rodecasters for years with OBS. Been super easy and great, last week the audio became super sensitive and the quality went down , I've reinstalled OBS and stuff and it's crazy sensitive now. Not sure what changed but argh.
I have a USB mic with a gain dial - you say to go to "audio midi setup" on Mac but then proceed to talk about PC and don't touch on what to do with a Mac setup. Any help is appreciated
sad thing is I have mine set up so I am howering about -20dB and I can still clip it easily. Might need to look at 32bit floating point interfaces or hardware limiter 😕
thanks so much for all the help bandrew! Quick question since google is failing me :( I have an id4 interface and I've previously been using the mic 1 channel meter to gainstage per your last video. But once the 2 channel interface is mixed to mono in OBS the gain is not even close to -20 / -12db peaks. Do you recommend I continue to use the ID4 software to gainstage and massively gain in post, or should I use OBS as my meter like you did in this video? Thanks again!
I believe what you’re encountering is when downmixing your interface to mono, OBS attenuates the signal by 6dB. My understanding is that this is to account for Pan Law. You will likely need to add +6dB to compensate for this.
@@Podcastage really appreciate your help, that makes sense and I'm glad I was playing it safe going by the id4 levels. I wonder if all the people we see thinking they need cloudlifters for dynamics is simply because many of them are streamers / youtubers mixing down to mono in their DAW - that would explain a lot haha. Either way, cheers again.
So I have set up OBS the gain and compressor as well as limiter the same way you have it set, I’m still getting clipping and not sure what else I can Change, currently the mic gain is set to 2 which they keep the same settings . What else can I try ?
Hi! I was wondering if you'd be able to make content/tips on how to make the Razer Seiren Mini sound good using the EQ of SteelSeries Sonar app, since the mic will be routed through the app to OBS.
What is your recommendation for applications like discord and Zoom? Some of these hide things like Db levels and gain. Should i just set up in something like audacity then apply krisp?
Yes you can: that's my setup at work, so my voice is consistent across all communication apps (Teams, Zoom...). The only drawback is EqAPO does not display the visual feedback of filters/VSTs, so you have to tune your setup "by ear". This mean record yourself and listen back, or enable the monitoring ("listen to this device" option in windows). Tips: you can run an external VST host that displays the visual feedback to tune your filters and find the good spot. Do not forget to first disable EqAPO processing on your mic while doing this or you will process the audio twice :)
Thanks a lot, you're a genius! Could you do a follow up, if possible, for settings like these (USB, interface XLR, etc) that are "dynamic" or what to change to sound good all around. This is specifically for OBS and recording/streaming but what about getting into Discord for a call or using the mic inside a video game? Sounding distorted is a problem or too low/too high as well. And changing every single volume source is always so annoying haha.
What I find is if your mic performs well in OBS and recording/streaming, then it sure will perform well in Discord and video games. The only difference is instead of doing it in OBS, you do it in an EQ app (e.g. Equalizer APO for Windows, Easy Effects for Linux, not sure what macOS uses).
Noise gates can't help you with that, they are for eliminating noise, not room reflections. Move the mic closer to your mouth, the closer it gets, the less room you'll hear.
THANK you! The clipping has stopped for my SM7B now that I've applied the settings you prescribed. My big issue now is that the volume for my voice is still much too quiet while singing, even with the MP3 turned town. My audio interface volume is maxed, the OBS mic volume is et at -13 Db. I tried pumping up the Output Gain in the Compressor to 3.00 dB from 0 but it's still just too quiet. At 6dB, it started sounding granular at my higher singing notes but it was better in volume. 12.5db, most of it is distorted. If I use my blue cloud box at 0dB, it's all distortion.
Before adding any digital effects, the first thing you need to do is see what you''re hitting on your digital meters. If you're peaking around -18dBFS, then when you add your gain plugin you will add maybe +10 to +12dB of gain. Then this gain filter is followed by the compressor and lastly the Limiter. The limiter is ESSENTIAL because it will stop any kind of digital clipping. If you're still getting distortion perhaps the gain on your preamp is still too high. Shut all the digital filters off and sing a high note and make sure you're not hitting 0dBFS. PS: If this is for recording, you should likely not do this, and instead should be recording in a DAW and then adding processing in post.
I am so glad that I found your account through Reddit. This is literally life changing. But, it seems like in Windows 11, you can't change it into dB in the Mic Properties setting. Just a question tho, do I have to do this even when I am not streaming and just having a normal gaming session in a game like Valorant?
@NuclearStrike I actually found it after fiddling with the sound settings a couple of days ago. Just wondering, do you found any changes to your sound using the mic after that change?
@@samueljustine8244 Actually, no. I have a Rode NT-1 connected via a Rode AI-1 audio interface. And fortunately I have 0dB at 100%, which surprised me a lot. 😅
@@NuclearStrike ah I see. I guess I'll just have to check what's the 0dB on my AKG Ara when it comes later on. You don't happen to use Voicemeeter as well do you?
@@samueljustine8244 I don't use Voicemeter anymore, now I process my audio in albeton live ( and I'm testing Waves StudioRack / StudioVerse Audio Effect which allows me to host VST 3 pluins directly in OBS ) and for other audio I use SteelSeries Sonar which I find much more intuitive.
this video came at the perfect time i kind of did something like this already with obs but i guess i didn't do it correctly. but yeah i want to do a joke in a video but it requires me to scream or at least get pretty loud and i was distorting in my video editing software but i thought if i did it in obs it would be good but it turns out i was still distorting so hopefully by following this i won't come across that problem anymore lol.
Basically, at every point of audio interconnect upstream, it should NEVER clip or be captured too quietly. That's also why noise floor and noise amplification per gain setting is really important.
I didn't realise Windows set the 0dB point at 50%... EDIT: That has made a _huge_ difference to the background noise of my mic by turning up the AI's two gain dials (both don't have zero markers boo) and turning Windows down to 50% or 0dB... The more you know, thanks! EDIT2: 50% might be a coincidence on this mic, as 53% is -0.2dB and the closest I can get)
these OBS videos on UA-cam are great n stuff but it’s ultra frustrating when I’m trying to dial in OBS with a dual pc setup… I don’t know if I am to do this or that on the game or stream pc. I cast fullscreen to stream pc with Elgato HD60X. I assume videos like this are for single pc.
I never knew I could see my windows microphone boost in dB. It's a real gamechanger

Awesome guide! Do you think maybe a similar one for EqualizerAPO could be a consideration?
lol I got surrpised by the slaps at the end. Thanks for this very informative video.
3:51 can i set up my gain inside EqualizerAPO instead of obs? since i am using compressor, limiter, eq all in equalizerAPO
What program are you using to make the adjustments?
Huge thumbs up! Thank you!

I AM ALWAYS EXCITED AND YELLING!
In OBS is it bad to disable windows audio ducking in the advanced audio settings?
Equalizer APO for Windows, Easy Effects for Linux, not sure what macOS uses).
my audio slide in Sound properties goes all the way to the left 0.0db and cuts out the mic. what do I do then?
Could you do a Noise Gate guide video for people who do not have good sound treated rooms? Thanks!
Noise gates can't help you with that, they are for eliminating noise, not room reflections. Move the mic closer to your mouth, the closer it gets, the less room you'll hear.
@@nickglover I mean, eliminating noise.
PS: If this is for recording, you should likely not do this, and instead should be recording in a DAW and then adding processing in post.
u saved my microphone
I am so glad that I found your account through Reddit. This is literally life changing. But, it seems like in Windows 11, you can't change it into dB in the Mic Properties setting. Just a question tho, do I have to do this even when I am not streaming and just having a normal gaming session in a game like Valorant?
Yes you can, just go to - system > sounds > additional sound settings > recording > find your microphone.
@@samueljustine8244 I don't use Voicemeter anymore, now I process my audio in albeton live ( and I'm testing Waves StudioRack / StudioVerse Audio Effect which allows me to host VST 3 pluins directly in OBS ) and for other audio I use SteelSeries Sonar which I find much more intuitive.
what about getting pitch down in live ?
Any advice for when you have to have the mic off camera (Rode PodMic and 212 in my case)?
this video came at the perfect time i kind of did something like this already with obs but i guess i didn't do it correctly. but yeah i want to do a joke in a video but it requires me to scream or at least get pretty loud and i was distorting in my video editing software but i thought if i did it in obs it would be good but it turns out i was still distorting so hopefully by following this i won't come across that problem anymore lol.
Would theese compressor settings be optimal for the rodecaster duo?
These are just settings I like. If you’re happy with what you’re getting on the RCP2, no need to change it.
I'm confused as to where I need to go in the settings for USB Mic
Basically, at every point of audio interconnect upstream, it should NEVER clip or be captured too quietly. That's also why noise floor and noise amplification per gain setting is really important.
he might be the goat
I didn't realise Windows set the 0dB point at 50%...
EDIT: That has made a _huge_ difference to the background noise of my mic by turning up the AI's two gain dials (both don't have zero markers boo) and turning Windows down to 50% or 0dB... The more you know, thanks!
EDIT2: 50% might be a coincidence on this mic, as 53% is -0.2dB and the closest I can get)
I AM ALWAYS EXCITED
these OBS videos on UA-cam are great n stuff but it’s ultra frustrating when I’m trying to dial in OBS with a dual pc setup… I don’t know if I am to do this or that on the game or stream pc. I cast fullscreen to stream pc with Elgato HD60X. I assume videos like this are for single pc.
