I had a 161 in an LC Torana back in the 80's, it was my first car and it would run without oil and it would run without coolant. When I ran it without coolant AND oil, it blew a rocker. Replaced the rocker and it ran fine...

I use cut the head bolt posts out the head in the 80's, and pin the rocker posts so they would not pull out at high revs, I would cut seats larger for bigger valves, and fit crane roller rockers simular to the ones on your engine, I fitted Rhodes anti pump up lifters, lightened flywheel, big rev master cam, high volume oil pump, baffled sump, and triple 45mm webber carbs, in my gtr torana, good fun.

I've always considered the 161 as Holden's Suffolk Punch. ( lawn mower from 1954 )

    G'day from West Australia😉
If you are lucky Peter, you could have a 149 small chamber cylinder head, along with those large intake ports and allen bolts in the bottom of intake ports.
Thus creating higher compression ratio 161.
Depending on how much has been removed from the head and the deck hight.
You could easily have a 10 or 11:1 compresion ratio.
If it still has a 161 crank that engine is going to rev to the moon practically.
A potential fun, fun, fun motor indeed.
By the way spark plugs are critical with that cylinder head port moding.
So is how carby is mounted on manifold.
I learned a lot of trick from a young age from my dad.
I followed his career path and did Automotive Engjneering.
Lmao dad did his via ship mail to England.
Kinda took him a while to complete his course.
I digress my trade lifee is 43yrs and counting🙂
Still love an old pushrod 6cylinder, coz everyone thinks there pilles of crap,
Untill they loose a sanctioned race with one.
Thanks for sharing your golden find, and enjoy buddy. Your on a winner there me thinketh.
    Thumbs up😉👍👍

Hi mate, from my research and castings etc it does seem like a 149 head with 179 crank as you state.
Definitely looking forward to its first drive that’s for sure.
      Great motors.
Thanks for your comments mate next video coming soon will show you how it sounds.
      Pretty aggressive cam.
Let me know your thought after hearing it run in the next video.
      Cheers mate enjoy.

      @@petersbackyardbuilds will do😉👍👍
Just as a suggestion, get a 2inch insulated block to put under the 2 barrel holley, so as to speed up the air flow through the venturies.
Better atomization of air and fuel is the bonus.
Put a mark on spark plugs hex nut lined up with earth electrode so you can see if they line up with intake valve.
If not get some washer off old spark plugs, and double them up try again.
The closer you can get it the better.
( it's called spark plug indexing).
Makes a difference for power and economy.
Waiting with baited breath for next one.
      Until then have fun🙂👍👍

@@steveveness3829 I would Piss that Holley off, they are a dinosaur carb compared to say a Weber. Even a Weber from an XF falcon 250c.i. will get that engine screaming along with better fuel economy than the Holley. If you want to race, then the triple weber set up is the best option.

Ahh the old red motor. Great fun with these in the 80's in an assortment of Toranas, EH's, a race car and older grey motor vehicles which we re-engined. They look like Yella Terra rockers. There was a guy in Auto Alley Parramatta whom did recessed bolt heads like this along with cam regrinding, solid lifters and the like. Can't remember his name sorry.
I think Yella Terra also did an alloy head?
The bees knees was a 186s block with crank from the same which was forged along with Commodore 4 cylinder Starfire rods. There was also a specific very strong 202 crank but that required a lot of grinding to fit the 186s block. You could really rev the right combination.

I've got no idea what those rockers are, but you're dead right, they're beefy! Someone has sunk some decisions and dollars into this motor in the past, that's for sure.
But yes, the rockers have rollers at their tips where they push down on the top of the valve stem.

    • @petersbackyardbuilds
      @petersbackyardbuilds  Рік тому +1

Hope your well mate, research suggests they are yellaterra roller rockers.
From what I read yellsterra back in the 80s used to work standard heads.
After contacting and speaking with yellaterra I was told it may have been one of their stage 5 upgrades. They used to stamp the head with a YT and the date. Hopefully I find this when cleaning it ready for pain.
Now they only do aluminium heads.
      Valves are also way oversized.
      Cheers mate.
      Enjoy.

removing post was a waste of time, with yella terra type tube post installed intake flows way over 300 hp, with post removed it can slow down flow, also you should not remove metal thinning flywheel from back, its dangerous as it can explode, flywheel should be lightened milled on the face outer only between clutch bolt holes, so its still strong
