The comment on 1 through 10 and why that number. Great idea. For me, being in Japan, I have to inquire more carefully and I'm not proficient on current topic. I'm ib certified and worked as an ib teacher PYP. That was a great way to give a student some agency.
Amazing episode! A fantastic initiative, Cindy! I absolutely agree Cindy, there were so many gold nuggets to take away from this session. Thank you so much Trevor for providing us with student centred assessment activities that will improve learner engagement in their learning journey. I really like the idea of having a SLC in the beginning of an academic year to hear from the learner on how they learn best. I have a wondering. At our IB school in Sweden, we use a continuum to show how a learner is progressing. Instead of giving the learner a grade / percentage, we place them on an evaluation criteria that is build around an achievement continuum - beginning, developing, consolidating and extending. Each evaluation criteria has an in-depth description of where the learner is. Furthermore, combined with the achievement continuum is the effort continuum - improving, satisfactory, very good and outstanding. The effort continuum is a way of giving feed-forwarding ideas and which steps students can take to progress to the next level of the continuum. Please could both of you let me know what you think of this format, as a means of moving away from numbers and percentages.
I think this model makes a lot of sense. I wonder about even removing the label (beginning, developing, etc.) and just selecting the descriptor? I absolutely love that you document both achievement and effort!
Really enjoyed the session on the importance of this ‘Us” job - thank you. Totally agree that feedback drives the learning - numbers can scare and put students off. I’ve always told my teachers to know their children and trust their judgements. We need to ‘measure the data we value - and value the data we measure’! 😊
This was another great interview! I loved this video. I want to go to BC and check out how they do reporting the way they do and formative assessments. I really appreciated this empathetic approach. He has a real respect for his students and teachers and administrators. I love the value-based approach. Gosh, I took a bunch of notes. Share this with my admin because we are focusing on assessment and how to do this with equity. Thanks for this!
This is completely in alignment with my beliefs as an inquiry educator. I wonder if training the business side of a school (in many for profit schools) in qualitative assessment would also help facilitate a shift to student centred learning?
I absolutely agree that this type of change requires everyone to be on board. Sales and marketing material should all be in alignment to attract and educate families.

What of criterion based assement and numbers(rubrics etc)?
I think it depends, but rubrics are especially helpful if codesigned with students 😊
