Arcade Rampart (1989), complete game (5cc) on Easy

- I think this is the first complete playthrough of arcade Rampart, from Atari Games, on UA-cam.
Even though this game uses four continues and is on Easy settings, arcade Rampart, at least with the trackball version which makes piece placement harder, is difficult. Final score was slightly more than 50,000. (I've never had a game of arcade Rampart with a score of over 60,000.)
There's some mistakes in this playthrough, it's hard to avoid making any. For more about Rampart, see upcoming issues of my fanzine, EXTENDED PLAY, at sites.google.c..., which will examine this brilliant and deceptively deep game in detail!
This was recorded using OBS, reencoded in Handbrake, and originally played using the trackball version (via mouse) on MAME v.123 (the last version of MAME that Rampart plays properly on, due to an obscure bug in later versions. The bug has been reported here: mametesters.or....

Dear god this game was almost impossible with a controller pad. I can't imagine even trying with a trackball.
It's not as bad as you think? With a pad-stick rebuilding is easier but combat is harder, and vice-versa. Even so, the one-player mode of arcade Rampart is really hard no matter what you play it with.
Official home emulations of arcade Rampart, annoyingly, present the trackball version, which is really hard to control even with an analog stick. There was a joystick version which had really nice control during the rebuilding phases. That's the best way to play in MAME these days, I think.
This game is so nostalgic, man.
@@floraarc9518 It came at the end of a time of great originality at Atari Games. It was the last work for Atari of designers Salwitz and Rolston, who made Paperboy, 720 and Cyberball.

@@rodneylives Omg, I just realized, I could be asking YOU all of these questions I'm having about emulation.
So I'm trying to run Rampart on MAME, and I know MAME had this one issue where it couldn't run Rampart because of some Atari emulation hullabaloo. I heard that THEY FIXED THIS, however, when I try to run this random Rampart ROM from the internet on the latest MAME, it does show an error.
Messageboards are saying "Oh, you need to get a version of Rampart that runs for your version of MAME" which seems dumb because wasn't the issue that MAME had an update that broke games like Rampart, and THAT was the issue, not the version of the ROM?
Now, I ask all this because I am able to run, as you said, Rampart on MAME v.123. However, I want to mess with the settings, because this is VERY hard with my mouse--and the newer MAME versions allow you to mess with the settings much more in-depth, whereas v.123 is very hard. So I'm stuck. Do you have any advice?
I mostly want to know 1) Is it possible to run Rampart on a newer MAME now? 2) Do I need to get my ROM from somewhere specific so it works? 3) What settings to use so that using a modern mouse is not HORRIBLE when trying to play this game? Because the responsiveness is simply INFURIATING!
@@rodneylives Wait holy crap I found semi-decent website, idk what version this is, but I think it's the DOS version. Well I probably can't link it, but DOSBOX seems to have a lot of what I want--sensitivity manipulation, choice between keyboard and mouse.
One thing that having access to actual good controls is... damn this game is actually just genuinely hard xD. Like even when I CAN control it the way I want, it's... actually VERY random and luck-based. Damn.
