My home town, and pretty much my entire life is in virgie. You can tell these folks aren’t from here though. The new school is not a far bus ride. Maybe 10 minutes from there. Also most of the teachers from there simply went to the new school when virgie closed. Some of my best memories involved roaming those halls. Also my junior high years in the “temporary” buildings that stood and were in use forever out by the pool on the other side of the gym. I would love to see the old school repurposed. Perhaps into a community center. Have free movies or shows in the auditorium. Or maybe affordable or even free housing for those that need it. Nearly 80 years of history in that school before the doors closed. I am one person. I have so many priceless memories there. Now imagine the thousands upon thousands of kids that came before me. Their memories. Many of those people no longer with us and their amazing memories of the school lost in the sands of time.
So nice to be able to see the town in the song! I’m not a Kentuckian but IMHO Tyler Childers should be made a Kentucky Colonel, and so should his incredible fiddle player, Jesse Wells.
I went to Virgie Jr High which was temporary buildings out behind the pool. I swam in that pool every summer of my life and that church is the church I grew up in.
My daughter discovered Tyler Childers some years ago when most folks hadn't heard of him. I'm kinda proud of her now for her ability to recognize talent early on. Thanks so much for this video!
Born in Virgie (well Pikevile) but raised off and on our whole lives in Virgie. Mom and Dad's family was from down there. Mommy is buried up Long Fork. I wish you all would of went up that way. I would of loved to see some of the old homesteads. Not to mention, my mom is buried at Amil Little's Cemetery up Long Fork. I miss it down there.
I remember hearing of Virgie when i was a kid in Big Rock, Va. Since it's only 35 miles from Big Rock, am sure i've been there. Daddy worked all around there in the coal mines. I also like the song . Thanks.
I had a couple of co-workers were from Virgie and I’ve been through there several times. The song reminds me of every kindly grandma I’ve ever known. One of the most powerful songs I’ve heard. Chokes me up every time. Look up the live version of Sleeping in my Dress Blues, same powerful meaning.
all my family hails for Virgie Kentucky, I've been there and didn't want to leave. We used to hold our family reunions in this school building when I was a kid...
My grandfather was an old regular Baptist preacher and started the little church as well as riding mule over the mountain to greasey creek and established the church there his picture still hangs there. His name was Adolph Blackburn but he was known as Doll Blackburn.
I went to virgie middle school some of my best memories are at that school. The principal was Philip Johnson the Joe Moore. Thank you for sharing this video. Its great to go down memory lane.
I love your videos. Maybe you could drive a bit slower so us old folks could look around a bit. I really enjoy your history lessons on each town as well. Good job.
I grew up in Virgie and went to school in that same high school...Some local people bought it and all the building including the pool and it has diminished since. They could have done so much with that building. I graduated from there in 1989. Virgie is so small if you blink while driving thru youll miss it lol
Thank you so much for following this visit, Venita Johnson was my closet friend and she passed with cancer I love her dearly she is buried up on Longfork of Virgie rte 1469 behind her home, her son was killed in a coal truck accident and she lost her husband to cancer also sweet lady she had a beauty shop in Virgie when she got sick she went to live with her remaking family member her daughter Brenda she loved her grandsons and all their friends, the old Virgie High School is where we all went but it was sold to the Wrights it was Virgie high school until 1990 they can’t tear it down because of Asbestos, the pool over behind the church the old buildings out back were called temporary but they was permanently LOL yes the gym was built new it was only about 20 yrs old in 1990 hope this helps you with knowledge of my hometown
@@realappalachia by the way that Childers lane you turned in is not related to Tyler his connection is with venita Johnson the granny of his friends it’s all on track 1469 you guys didn’t go to the right at the funeral home
At 9:09 mark in this video is a building on the left where Venita Johnson used to have a Beauty shop back when I was a teenager (late 90’s). She is the lady the song is about. She was a hoot!! Very loving, kind and fun lady. My son went to grade school with her grandsons, Cody and Brent before they moved to Lawrence County, which is where they met Tyler. Venita loved those boys so much.
@@DanaTackett-Gesser Dana you are Mules daughter you had one son David right where is your sister at now how is your dad Venita was at Johnson County in Paintsville where Brenda lived when she passed I went and visited her while she was there I loved her dearly she use to come in Docs Diner we owned your son went to school with my son Brandon or it might have been you he is 50 we live in Sevierville TN for last 22 years how is your dad
My Momma and her 11 siblings went there, mom said it’s full of a bestows, that’s why they will tear it down! My mother taught in a one room school house on her first teaching job! Typo on IPhone, Asbestus*
It’s the old Virgie High School, my 82 year other mom went there, as with the rest of my family, my mother’s first teaching job, was in a one room school house up in Sookeys Creek, the gym is newer
Love your videos. What is the name of the documenty of the coal miner's strike. Iam in California but love your videos. Love it when you give information on the coal miner's and country. May God bless you.
Don't know where he and she are from, but I love her voice - just some trace of what sounds like our Virgie/Shelby Valley accent, seems to me - I went to the old Virgie Grade School (which the tornado destroyed by blowing off the roof years ago, where the 'new gym' was located) from 1956-1961 and Virgie High School from 1964-graduating in 1968.
Sorry but I was class of 1969 and we had Mr Fred Cox as principal he was great we use to run a restaurant above the church my home church is Alliance church
I have lived in virgie all my life and still do. The outside of the gym was redone, and at once not long ago was being used. (Whithin the past 2yrs) but i dont think it is being used now. I wish you could have turned right at the stop sign and went and shown where the local grocery store, and gas station that is also located in virgie. Like you stated in the video Virgie has a very small population and everybody knows everyone. Since the coal industry has went down the town is pretty dead
I watched a vid on China where out in the middle of nowhere, an abandoned school was taken over by a guy who transformed it into a community center. Too bad they can't do this in these places.
@@realappalachia That's good news. Maybe the work from home craze will subside and the flight from cities along with it. North Georgia and Western NC have been hammered by moveins.
They go tithe new Shelby Valley High School and Shelby Valley Elementary on the 4 lane highway on the road 23 they combined Virgie and Dorton kids back in 1990-91 school year, my son was the last Homecoming King at Virgie High School

Thank you so much, no we aren't related just from the same area

Did this area get flooded ?
This is a possible retirement area for me, but I'm afraid it will grow.
I honestly don’t see that happening in that area any time soon. It’s pretty rural

I'm not sure it's about his grandmother, I got more a feeling it was his music teacher. and when she died the boys from her class went to her funeral.
It's about the funeral home at Virgie.
Where do kids who live there now go to school?
Shelby Valley is where the school was consolidated. It is a decently long drive but getting to be more and more common unfortunately

Shelby valley highschool
