    Fun project, but there are parts that gave me a headache. That euro power extension with UK converters, all jammed inside the case... Get an IEC C13 ("kettle lead") PDU, it's a quarter of the size for the number of outlets. Not even the rackmount kind, just a plastic block. They even have mounting holes. Then for your 5V, 9V or 12V devices, get one power adapter that can provide a few amps at whatever voltage you need. The power adapter can have an inlet for C13 or C7 ("figure 8") connectors - make a short power cable that converts to C14 (male kettle lead connector) for your PDU. Then use some terminal block to split your low voltage supply / supplies and distribute around your rack. Perfectly safe if you do it well, and much more compact.
    And then those cable ties holding your D-series connectors onto your 1U termination panel. Good grief, man! Get some M3 nuts and bolts, preferably with shake-proof washers! :)

    Hello,
    i'm wondering why you didn't put the connectors on the rear side, while working with it you will have lots of cabling on the desk.
    Simply mountig the ATEM pointing with the connectors to the outside will do the job as well and prevents the heat coming from the heatsink to stuck inside the Rack.
    Using the pactchbay and patchconnectors wil aslo give you more signal loss wich reduces the possible lenght of SDI cables.

      Well this certainly was a long time ago that I made those choices haha. At the time I did some tests and found this to be the most trustworthy way. After all I want to trust the gear when I am at a gig! But I’m sure I would have done it differently now

      In this case I found a method that worked and stuck with it. The reason I chose this side is that in my early days of testing the ATEM I lay it flat on the table and those where the times issues occurred more frequently, so my theory was that keeping that side of the case cool would help. With all of that said it likely would have been good either way. I don’t even use this anymore so I’ll likely never know :)

    I think your rig is only the 2nd one I've seen that actually used a custom patch panel for the connections, everyone seems to just run the wires right out the back... mine is set up like that now while I'm building and it drives me crazy! The panel makes everything so much cleaner.
    How do you like the BM Smartview duo? Do you ever find you're wishing you had larger screens? I'm on the fence about buying one of those, or buying something like a pair of cheap 10" field monitors. I'm using a pair of 7" monitors I borrowed from my cameras and they really seem to be pushing the limits of usability, but at the same time two larger monitors means another case to carry and more desk space needed to set up with.

    • @heretorecord
      @heretorecord  7 років тому

      +9thstreet agreed about the panel. I used this setup for months without it and now that I have it it just makes perfect sense. Set up is easier which is always great!
      As for the monitors, I am perfectly happy with their size - I sit pretty damn close to them in most of my jobs so they work well for me. It's probably the resolution that I'm most disappointed about (it's hard to check focus) - so now I'm thinking about carrying one extra monitor if I can get a light and portable one. I just don't have the space to bring two big monitors (as much as I'd like to).
      So I would say if you can find the space, go for the two large ones, however if you are like me and a bit tight for room (and are already carrying around too much equipment as it is) stick with the SmartView for a while and see how it does you!

    LOVE it! I actually did mount my ATEM 1M/E facing outward because I figured there would be better airflow through the vents by doing it that way.
    I'm curious about the tiny PC you put inside the box.. what's it used for and how does it work?
    Also, my experience is that there's a 66ms delay between video and audio using the ATEM; as I record dance shows, this is really noticable sometimes (dancers can be quite picky!). I've solved this by delaying the audio going into the ATEM by 66ms using two Behringer SHARKs... how are you dealing with audio delay?
    On my flight case I added a shelf for the sharks. Would love to hear what you're doing.
    :-)

    • @heretorecord
      @heretorecord  7 років тому

      +Candlelight Productions hey! Thanks for the comment and really glad you enjoyed the setup!
      The tiny PC is a LattePanda which is basically a single board windows 10 pc. I use it to run a "break screen" for intervals during a live stream. I run chrome in full screen and navigate to a simple website I made that shows "stay tuned... the next talk starts in 20 minutes" and a schedule of upcoming talks.
      I figured it was the easiest way to do it, rather than creating images and loading them into the ATEM in the media pool. I'll make a video some day about it!
      It could also be used for media playback which is nice.
      As for audio delay, I use the XLR connections on one of my cameras and bring the audio in through HDMI so I've not found there to be any sync issues as the video and audio appears to reach the ATEM at the same time. That said, the conferences I shoot might not be as picky about sync as your dancing clients so perhaps that is something I will need to address one day 🙂
      Would love to see some videos of your setup, if you have any!
      Cheers,
      John

      +Sammamish Q ease of transport and fitting are the key reasons. If I was to flip it the other way it would take up more room in the box as I'd have to have it mounted deeper inside. This method is the best of both worlds!

    How about the audio setup for better quality for that box? For example I wanted to do live stream for band shows with multiple mic inputs, guitars, etc.?

    • @heretorecord
      @heretorecord  7 років тому

      +Alibata Pilipinas you might want to check out some audio mixers that come in a rack configuration. There are a bunch of options out there!

    • @alibatapilipinas2611
      @alibatapilipinas2611 7 років тому

      I was pertaining to the audio feed going to the encoder, before broadcasting it live. To make sure the audio quality is neat... How did you setup that?

    • @heretorecord
      @heretorecord  7 років тому

      +Alibata Pilipinas ahhh I see! I would usually go from the master out of a mixer and into one of my camera via XLR. Then this will go through the HDMI out of the camera into the mixer. This'll show up in the encoder and will be excellent quality.
      Alternatively you can run the audio right into the ATEM video switcher however his can cause slight delay between audio and video.
      Sending the audio in through a camera will sound great and will minimise audio delay.

    • @alibatapilipinas2611
      @alibatapilipinas2611 7 років тому

      Thanks for the quick response. But my goal is for the live band show in the stage with multiple mic inputs. I understand that all of those input will be hook up directly to the sound board or mixer, but still confuse how to hook the mixer going to the encoder. Do I need some sort of compressor like the behringer ultra-curve before it goes to the encoder?
      I will disregard the audio in the ATEM, since you've mentioned that this will cause delay.

    • @heretorecord
      @heretorecord  7 років тому

      +Alibata Pilipinas well let's say for example that you wanted to use the onboard audio from on of your cameras (bad ideas but just for example). Then this audio would be passed via the HDMI cable along with the video from that camera. It would then be routed into the ATEM and out of the ATEM again as it goes to your live streaming encoder.
      With the ATEM software on the computer, there is a audio section where you decide which camera sources audio to use.
      If you use different audio on the camera mentioned then that'll find it's way to your encoder through the same route.

    Hi John,
    I'm looking for a multi-cam (iso?) recording solution with my ATEM Television Studio HD - not just recording the PGM, but recording all four SDI-inputs all at the same time.
    My initial thought was to buy four BMD Hyperdeck Studio Mini and put them in between my cameras and the ATEM as an input/record(/scaler?) device - connecting my cameras to HyperDeck SDI-IN, and then connecting the HyperDeck SDI-OUT to the ATEM SDI-IN. Can you think of a better/cheaper solution?
    Cheers,

    • @heretorecord
      @heretorecord  6 років тому

      That’s a tough one. I’ve been thinking it might make sense to use a BMD MultiView 4 and then record the output of that to one HyperDeck Mini. You’ll record a full 4K image with all ISOs on it. I’d personally look into that as it’ll possibly save some money (but make a big old file with the iso recording). Definitely something to think about!

      +Sammamish Q along HDMI cables aren't recommended for live video production as they don't play well with hardware switchers. Nothing longer than 3 meters usually. They often just don't work when there longer (although they can work in some cases).
      If costing is a consideration, you can also look into HDMI to Cat6 extenders as Cat6 cabling is very inexpensive.

      Also the fan units are great for general air flow on and out of the case, but we wanted air to be directly focused on my ATEM, then we can be confident that it would break down on during a show.
      Desktop fans work perfectly for us, and we are looking into a slightly different way of mounting some to the case, however they will always be pointed right at the ATEM for maximum stability!

      Copy/Pasting a little here from the above comment...
      Thanks for the connect, Tedz

      Here to Record That's really cool, do you just have it set up as a keyer then? In your event streaming video it seems like the background is translucent and that seems pretty cool. Thanks!

      +Techkid6 Gaming Hey - I've made a full video about how I use the latte panda and how I've created that translucent effect: ua-cam.com/video/_SvWFKcXraQ/v-deo.html Hopefully it's clear! Feel free to comment on it with and questions!
