Having worked in broadcast television for eight years and many non-profit organizations who run video production, I can say that I've never used a piece of BM equipment that wasn't half-baked in some way. We frequently had three hyperdecks recording simultaneously and all of them failed (often with no indication they stopped running) even had one spontaneously combust in our control room in the middle of a broadcast. We had a BM SDI card that failed. Even their video matrix was a bit goofy, though it worked. Don't get me started on their cameras (let the hate mail fly). That said, DEFINITELY THE ROLAND! I'm not as afraid of it breaking and it also works more like real broadcast switchers.
BM ATEM Mini is Bugged.. USB Feeds to Skype etc are not stable. . I also agree BM Stuff is nice looking but seems buggy. But you do get what you pay for.,. Thanks for you input!.
I actually owned both devices so I can honestly say I really enjoyed the Roland, which was my first switcher. I have been using it for nearly two years in my church but I soon discovered that I was lacking inputs and I recently bought the ATEM Television Studio HD and I really enjoy the flexibility. For me the blackmagic wins when it comes to effects, keying lyrics, integration with the Stream Deck. It's really versatile. I really enjoyed the time I was using my Rol however it wasn't very long when I discovered all of its limits. Now with the ATEM I am good to go for a long time!
Great review. I owned a V1 HD for a couple of years. Used it to live stream events in both small (25 to 100 person) and large (500 to 3500 person) venues. I found it easy to set up and use, enjoyed the fact that I could do everything I needed from the console even though there is software available. Configured as a 3-camera 1 pc set-up for lower thirds and other graphics. Camera set-up was literally plug and play, preview screen is awesome, split the output with one signal going to a Black Magic Video Assist for recording and output to my streaming platform (Boxcast), and the other to a reference for me and my clients. My only regret was not getting the V1 SDI so I could use better cameras at greater distances from the console. Not a fan of software based switching -- can't imagine what it might be like if a system needed rebooting in the middle of a performance. Had to get out of the live streaming business due to health reasons.
I am just getting into this job for live and recorded “interview sessions” where I have to film an interview with two cameras, switching back and forth while recording it live. Ur comment is right down my alley! I need assistance on the equipment to buy. Any way I can reach out for a couple of minutes for a question or two and show you my set up ?
I use all Blackmagic cameras, I love my ATEM, but I agree with the idea that the buttons on it in the front are not comfortable. I need at least 6 inputs and prefer it over the Roland.
Having used ATEM mixers for several years now, making sure all the video inputs are matching in format has become a fact of life. (I hold out hope that one day they will put in frame sync, but I fear that may jack the prices up significantly.) I would still prefer the ATEM over the Roland for flexibility. More inputs. More variety in inputs. Sans the control panel, the ATEM has several other options for control and is network enabled. Most of my setups usually include a wifi access point so direct wireless control is easy. I have worked with almost every version of the ATEM except the TVS HD. Its very likely if I had one I would rarely if ever use the control panel on it. Mounted in a road case, it doesn't look very comfortable to operate. I'd probably stick with what I know. I like the variety in control methods that I can use depending on the environment. Whether it be a touchscreen computer or laptop in a control booth, or a tablet running an ATEM control app while standing in tight quarters. Even setting for two operating points. Should I have to step away for the controls for a second, a remote camera man can take over switching control from his position. You didn't mention the standard XLR audio inputs on the ATEM. They can be a thing when plugging directly into a mixing board without needing adapters. Good comparison video over all!
@DMM Tech Same here, I've been using the 2 m/e Atem system in a flypack for a while now and it can get overwhelming when all of a sudden one of your cameras won't connect because it got set to a different setting when it was turned off. However Blackmagic does offer so much more that I'm definitely willing to cough up the extra cash to buy converters. The biggest selling point for me was being able to use Blackmagic Ursa's with SDI in and out to have full control of each camera through the Color Control Panel.
@@richardwilliamson1533 That is something I hope to be able to experience one day. Total camera control from the mixer/app. None of my cameras are Blackmagic. (Panasonics personally and at work. Canons and a Sony at my Church.) I have wondered what it must be like to have virrual CCU access to a camera remotely. Not to mention the built in audio comms to communicate with camera operators. Perhaps one day. Right now at least I have remote lens control (With the Cameras on a PT head) via Sony LANC and Panasonic's version of LANC. My primary switcher right now has been an ATEM 1 m/e 4k in roadcases personal work and a setup at work. At the Church its the original 1 m/e (HD).
Thanks for the video, very interesting! I've got myself the ATEM and it's very cool. Main issue with it is the strict input setup and you can't merge different sources.
I've used and have all three, and I agree with your conclusions, I personally use the BlackMagic because I know what I'm doing and want that rack mount. We also have the V1HD and V1SDI that are in fixed locations that might be used by people that aren't well versed in what's going on with all the buttons :P
Wish the Roland offered expandability for more than 4 sources. I like the control surface better but the ATEM seems to be the smarter purchase. I’d be using it for a podcast... with occasional streaming (using BMD WebPresenter). We need 4 cam angles but also want to display a laptop screen on occasion.
I have worked with both the Roland V1-HD and a number of Blackmagic switchers, and I have to say I much prefer the Blackmagic TVS. As someone who learned on a professional switcher, the Roland had some weird quirks, one, for example, is how the preview and program buses switch back and forth when you use the T-bar. I think the Roland is a great device for the not so technical person and if you just want something that works without spending a lot of time with it. The Blackmagic has so many more features and capabilities, keying is a big one for me, the Roland luma key only worked half the time, so I just couldn't use it. If you're okay spending a little more time getting your cameras/ sources to work with the Blackmagic and a little networking, it's so worth it. Plus not to mention the Blackmagic has a great variety of inputs and outputs, including an AUX output, which you can send any signal to.
I chose the ATEM, but I really wanted the Roland V1-SDI.... but it was twice the price at the time. I use PiP a lot, and get annoyed that I have to use a PC interface with the ATEM, and not used more that 3 video inputs as often as I expected. If Blackmagic brought out a new version of the ATEM Television Studio Pro with some HDMI's and built in Scaler, that would be PERFECT (built in SD recorder would be icing on the cake)
If you are trying to send the program feed to a non-sdi monitor from the BMD Atem, you are out of luck unless you buy the Hyperdeck Studio Mini. That being said, I will still be going with the BDM Atem. Adorama has the bundle right now for $1,649.95 USD: Atem, Hyperdeck and rack mount frame. And don't forget to buy power cables.
One concern I have relating to the video is that the Roland DOES NOT have a scaler of any kind. You set the selection switch on the back and all input sources had better match that or it will not work. Also that’s the output you’ll get as well. This unit is in our rental stock and throws off novice users all the time because they want to mix the resolution of their inputs.
Thanks for clearing that up, Rick. I missed the mark on that one. The Roland was much more forgiving for me connecting sources so I misunderstood what was happening - I suspect that the auto switching from 1080i to 1080p should have been my winning factor for the Roland, at least it does that much.
Hi John. I attached it in a steel platform with 6” slider. Then make a steel belt-like with heat shrink cable tube to avoid scratch in the unit. You can check it in my video recently uploaded. Actually you’re video helps me a lot before building it. Thanks
In Indonesia they both sells at the same price except for the v1 sdi, it is more expensive. For ease of use v1 hd/sdi wins, but for i/o option bmd atem win
I've used both, and each have a couple of deal breakers depending on your use case: The BlackMagic ATEM Television Studio HD requires that all input sources be set to the same resolution/frame rate exactly. Have some cameras spitting out 29.97fps and a GoPro at 30fps? That won't work, you'll need a Decimator or something similar to adjust frame-rates to use them with the ATEM TVS HD. The Roland is more forgiving, but you do need to get your cameras close. There are 3 main settings on the Roland 720p, 1080i and 1080p. The Roland V-1HD's Chroma and Luma Key settings leave much to be desired. The clip and feather settings are fairly coarse, you just can't dial them in to the level of precision as with the ATEM line, plus with the ATEM we could use an Alpha key. Additionally, the controls of how you turn on the DSK on the Roland are a little wonky depending on if the t-bar is up or down. After initially buying the Roland V-1HD (after watching this video) we needed cleaner lower thirds, so we switched to the ATEM TVS HD plus Stream Deck with Companion and a Decimator. If anyone wants to buy a lightly used Roland V-1HD let me know ;-)

No. The Hypereck Studio is way overpriced for the convenience, plus the playback on it is not very versatile either. I use laptops with VLC for playback and a BMD video assist to record.
Do any of these options have a way to control a PTZ camera? Like for example VMIX has the ability to manage a ptz camera right from the software. Just wondering if this is possible with any of these two options.
Hi John, can you recommend a good capture card to use with the Roland? I've been using a BMD Mini Recorder for a few years but it never works for 1080p. Any tips?
I also use the Mini Recorder so I can’t say for sure what one you should get. But do check out the AJA utap, and the magewell devices. I think they have a few!
Quick question please...If i get the Roland, do I necessarily need an external recorder to be able to record or is there a way to get the video to my laptop and record directly to my system without having to spend extra cash on an external recorder.
You would need to get an external device to record the video or get a device to go from the Roland to your computer (hdmi capture card of some sort) so either way you would need a device.
@@heretorecord Thank you. How about the ATEM Mini. The usb out doesnt need a capture card as it can connect directly to the system usb port. I however want to find out if that video is a compressed video or if it is usuable without having to really buy an external recorder.

Do any of these options have a way to control a PTZ camera?
Like for example VMIX has the ability to manage a ptz camera right from the software. Just wondering if this is possible with any of these two options.
Ricardo Gamero neither control ptz. On the Roland side, there is the xs-62 that can do this.
Used the Magewell USB capture device with it.
How do you do your video cross fade into the atem ? For this the t-bar is quite the best on the v1.. thanks
You have to do it in software or with the “auto” button
Which one is more noisy? :)
I can’t recall but I don’t think the Roland even has a fan - easy winner!
@@heretorecord Must be an improved version from the one I got when it first came out a couple of years ago :)
Maybe I am mistaken then!
@@heretorecord As I recall it was so bad, I couldn't have it beside me on the desk for live mixing my podcasts :)
I just work with Roland it does have fan, you can hear it in a quiet room
Great video as always. How do the two compare when it comes to macros?
I don’t think macros are even a thing on the Roland so it’s BMD that wins by default ;)
