- Can you 3D scan a camera? Today we’re scanning a camera body - this beautiful Sony RX10 IV - this is a super awesome camera capable of 1000fps and 600mm zoom and it’s treated us well over the past 2 and a half years. But why would you want a 3D scan of a camera? Accessories, accessories, accessories! There are unlimited possibilities with a 3D model of a camera and some good CAD software. Custom cages, rigs, mounts, special attachments, handles, you name it! You can create things that aren’t currently made, or maybe you want to make it yourself for cheaper. Maybe you’ve got a RED DSCM2 body, or an ARRI Alexa, and you want to make accessories - or attach it to a drone, or integrate a gopro, or custom housing rig - there’s a lot of options, and custom rigs happen a lot in high-budget productions.

The HX is a highly capable laser scanner, about $2000 more than the Pro HD -- but the Pro HD has an automated turntable. What's the trade-off? The HX can scan dark objects, without any modification -- whereas the Pro HD generally needs a disappearing scanning spray.

Technically you are not comparing apple to apple. Scan with the powder always gives some advantages. There are blue laser scanners that will deliver the same scan quality as the one you scanned with powder, or even better, and they are handheld.
how bout a video reverse engineering parts for the camera ? via fusion so
Weird question, but do you guys have a scan/3d model of the H/HX available? I just bought one from you guys and wanted to 3D print a holder for the unit to adapt the HX for a tripod much like the Pro HD. What do you think the results would be with a spray and structured light turntable scan with just the HX? I know the turntable would have to be manual, but just curious on using just exclusively the HX? Thanks for the video!
I just purchased a Einscan Pro HD and I made a manual turn table and it works great I just turn it and hit go. Hopefully it will work the same for yours.
Good Idea! New video: "Scanning a 3D Scanner with a 3D Scanner" -- Hah! That would be funny, and good, just to provide the STL -- maybe I'll scan the HX with the H, to show why the H really isn't good for normal scanning (just humans), and then scan the H with the HX to show how much better it is.
For the turntable, it's a different ballgame on the HD because it uses the coded targets to get even better accuracy, and is automated -- it would still be good on the HX, but it's just not the same :) For overall versatility, though, the HX wins in our book.
@@VisionMiner you should do that video, i've seen a lot of used H on ebay, which seemed weird meaning they probably suck at normal scanning
Ive used 3d scanners (metro scanner the 30k setup) before you need to reinforce the connection port otherwise after all the use it gets (constant use so about 4-6 months) eventually the ports will begin to fail and you will need to get it fixed. The connection ports these scanners generally use are not designed to hold the weight of the cord.
Sounds like you had a bad experience with that brand -- like many other electronics, we know what you mean -- the EinScans have ridiculously beefy cables, though, being designed specifically for handheld scanning, so we haven't seen any wear on the cables yet :)
@@VisionMiner beefy or not the connection point isnt designed to hold weight. The cords on the metra scanner were super beefy but for taller parts that had to be scanned the weight of the cord would damage the connection point over time. We eventually wrapped the connecting bodies to the scanner to support the weight of the cord to prevent that wear from occurring.
Fixed scan mode on the Einscan pro scanners I think is their strongest weapon (particularly the pro 2x as it has a higher resolution than the HD). The data quality produced in this mode can better laser scanners costing a lot more - you just wont have the accuracy. I don't think this was a very fair test, the HX would do a much better job if you sprayed the part.
Good point! I should do a part 2 -- scanning the sprayed version with the HX. Might even whip that out tonight! Thank you for the comment & suggestion! Perhaps even a comparison of handheld vs. handheld....
@@VisionMiner Yeah I would also like to see if the HX is capable of the same resolution with a sprayed part. I'd like to be able to scan large car-scale parts for reference points so we're leaning towards the HX, but It'd be nice to know if its capable of the incredible detail that the pro HD picks up for small objects. How does the HX compare to the pro HD in non-laser mode with spray?
