I don't think I'll ever meet a Billy Joel song I don't like, so this list could go on for ever. He definitely hasn't lived the most "pure" life, but all those crazy situations of his life are what lead to his absolute genius song writing. Still I wish more of his more thoughtful and deep songs made it on the Top 10. Goodnight Saigon is probably his most gut-wrenchingly emotional song ever. Coming out of a time when the music industry was focused on the anti-war effort, but often joined in on the distrust of the soldiers who fought in it this song really found a way to touch upon the experience of that terrible war through the eyes of a soldier. It wasn't accusatory in any way, rather realize the humanity of those men who served. The chorus "and We Will All Go Down Together" can be quite a tear-jerker. And So It Goes was described by Joel as his favorite song that "never took off," Its far slower and less energetic than some of his songs, but intensely heartfelt and nostalgic and that is often when he was at his best. I think the entire Storm Front album is incredible underrated. And I really can't believe Miami 2017 (Lights Go Out On Broadway) didn't make it on. Its fascinatingly insightful and terrible ominous at the same time. I think it has always provided the perfect opposite to pair with New York State of Mind.

Ya I agree with you, I mean I can understand why it is underrated and honestly I kind of underrated it at times. I think what really started making me appreciate it was when I started playing his songs on piano and trying to sing with them and had a lot of trouble. That happens to me a lot where the people who you think of as amazing vocalists I actually have no trouble singing their songs and then someone like billy you realize is actually kind of tough he has a lot more range than you think
And So it Goes? Of all the Billy Joel wonderful songs, this is the one that will still be played 500 years from now. How did you not mention THIS ONE??

Been a UK fan since the mid '70's. As a non musician I would say he has a fantastic ability to meld the music with the vocals as they are the product of one mind. I love all his obscure stuff.
Damn, I love Billy Joel. I'm a bit younger than most of his fans, having first really gotten into his stuff when I was in high school in the early 2000s after my then-girlfriend randomly burned me a mix CD that was entirely comprised of his music. Not only did it have most, if not all, of these amazing tracks, but it caused me to fall in love with songs like "Downeaster Alexa", "Blonde Over Blue", and my all-time favorite Billy Joel song (and song that I think perfectly expressed what I want in a relationship), "All About Soul".
Innocent Man? Goodnight Saigon? Longest Time? This Night? Leningrad? Tell Her About It? Movin Out(Anthony's song)? My Life? Second Wind? All For Leyna? She's Got A Way?

Finally! I have been searching through the comments to find someone who truly appreciates The Ballad of Billy the Kid. One of my favorite songs of all time.
James. I’ve never seen him perform it - saw him about 25 times. Also never heard it mentioned on any list. The piano and xylophone is so haunting. It’s my favorite.
The Stranger, the song gives me a old west vibe with the soft, whistling opening and closes out with the same sounds. Truly one of his best albums and one of my favorite tracks
I think even a list of Top 20 Billy Joel songs would leave out a ton of good ones. I have almost 20 Billy Joel albums on my iTunes, which equals almost 200 songs. Once you remove the repeats that come on live albums and "Greatest Hits" albums, you still have a ton left over. Not to mention, I think every single song is good. Granted, I probably haven't listened to all of them, but I haven't heard a bad one yet.
I think The Stranger is a HUGELY underrated song. Billy's whistling skills are phenomenal.
When he demo'd that song to his manager, the whistling was intended to be a stand-in for a yet undetermined instrument. His manager told him to keep the whistling as is, claiming that the whistler was indeed "the stranger". It worked brilliantly, of course. :)

No Piano Man or Scenes from an Italian Restaurant makes my eyes hurt.
Good list. I would have given Downeaster Alexa an honorable mention, but honestly, Billy has so many priceless songs it's hard to list them all.
so many good songs not even mentioned. I think this will have to be one of those "we'll do another later" top tens.
Uptown Girl, Good. Honesty, Good. You May Be Right, Epic. It's Still Rock and Roll To Me, Awesome. We Didn't Start The Fire, Deserved to be a little later on the list. New York State of Mind, Incredible. Just The Way You Are, Classic. Scenes From an Italian Restaurant, Iconic. Only The Good Die Young, Righteous. Piano Man, Can't beat it. Captain Jack..... Vienna... The River of Dreams .... Big Shot .... She's Always a Woman... All Excellent Honorable Mentions. As a lifelong Billy Joel fan I can say you guys killed this one. Should have made it a Top 15 list though and integrated all the HMs.
No Ballad of Billy the Kid?
Ian R. There better be ballad of billy the kid
I know right, that’s my favorite song by him. Wait before I finish the video tell me, did they include Scenes from an Italian Restaurant or Prelude/Angry Young Man.
Wasn’t quick enough. I am now finding out that scenes from an Italian Restaurant is number 3. I doubt angry young man will be on here
Goodnight Saigon?
I agree
It may not be as popular but the raw emotion in Tomorrow Is Today is still my favorite Billy Joel performance.
love Billy Joel, he actually preformed at my moms college graduation. surprised uptown girl was so low. Cant believe river of dreams didn't make it! I'm glad we didn't start the fire is on here but i doesn't get the recognition it deserves its a lyrical masterpiece.
It’s not secret that he’s an amazing musician but I’ve always felt that his singing voice was severely underrated.
Just saw him live in Madison Square Garden! It was my favorite concert, he blew me away!!
I liked when she said "This is a pop song, written by a master."
And So it Goes? Of all the Billy Joel wonderful songs, this is the one that will still be played 500 years from now. How did you not mention THIS ONE??
How come..?
Where is Tell Her About It??? :(
This list is getting me in such a Billy Joel mood again :) LOVE him. Scenes From an Italian Restaurant is especially one of my all time favorites! But sooo many of his songs are just such classics and amazing. Billy Joel and Elton John, man... amazing music to have grown up on, for sure!

Yeah! They got it right except for that!
Yeah, where the heck is the longest time.... Woah oh oh, for the longest time. Sorry, had to get that out of my head...l wait...
IF YOU SAID GOODBYE TO ME TONIGHT.... Okay, I'm done.
Billie is honestly so talented. All for his songs should be on this list
Think I can honestly say that I don't hate any of his songs. There's just some that are better than others.
"A Matter of Trust" should have been at least an HM; it's probably the closest thing Billy Joel has done to a straight rocker...
also "No Man's Land"
Absolutely love A Matter of Trust
Miami 2017, Angry Young Man, Say Goodbye to Hollywood, Don't Ask Me Why, It's Just A Fantasy, Goodnight Saigon, She's Got a Way, Allentown, Pressure, Innocent Man, Time to Remember, Baby Grand, Downeaster Alexa, Shameless, And So it Goes, Lullabye, The list is endless! He's an American treasure!
Downeaster alexa, i go to extremes, allentown, the longest time, moving out and an innocent man should all have at least been honorable mentions
What a legend. Some of the greatest music in history came from Billy Joel
Vienna has always been my favourite Billy Joel song. :3
there's a lot of BJ singles and songs to mention. It's not a surprise if someone is disappointed. I like pretty much this list but not entirely. 10. I go to extremes 9. Uptown girl 8. Honesty 7. Piano man6. Scenes from an Italian restaurant 5. We didn't start the fire 4. It's still rock'n'roll to me 3. River of dreams 2. The Downeaster Alexa 1. Why should I worry? This songs represents the reason why I love Billy Joel: catchiness, passion, soul power, cleverness and sunny side up. Thanks Billy! ;)
If you haven't heard of Goodnight Saigon, it is an amazing blend of emotion and music.
Been a UK fan since the mid '70's. As a non musician I would say he has a fantastic ability to meld the music with the vocals as they are the product of one mind. I love all his obscure stuff.
Goodnight Saigon? Downeaster Alexa?
No.......
***** none of them made it.
I'd take Downeaster Alexa over most of these
Leningrad?
YOURE ONLY HUMAN AND VIENNA TOO
"Until the Night" (52nd Street) is #1 for me.
>>>>> Innocent man , Summer highland falls , this night , goodnight my angel , movin, out
i could go on and on and on.... x
genius
My Dad raised me on the Glass Houses album and I've been a diehard fan ever since
Thanks Dad
My Top 10:
10. Uptown Girl
9. River of Dreams
8. Piano Man
7. Storm Front
6. Zanzibar
5. Baby Grand
4. The Longest Time
3. Root Beer Rag
2. Streetlife Serenade
1. Ballad of Billy the Kid
Finally! I have been searching through the comments to find someone who truly appreciates The Ballad of Billy the Kid. One of my favorite songs of all time.
Tyler Jones I second that. Ballad of Billy The kid is under appreciated
Tyler Jones Billy the Kid is one of my favorites too.
Tyler Jones
Glad to see Zanzibar on there. It’s criminally underrated.
James. I’ve never seen him perform it - saw him about 25 times. Also never heard it mentioned on any list. The piano and xylophone is so haunting. It’s my favorite.
Billy joel is my idol. He's humble as hell.
Pressure, A Matter of Trust, Goodnight Saigon, Downeaster Alexa and Allentown need to be on this list.
I really think Moving Out (Anthony's Song) should've been here maybe in the 7-9th spot. I'm quite surprised it's not even on the honorable mentions.
I sarted listen to his music when I was like 10 and I love him since then. I wanted to speak english mainly to sing his songs, he is just amazing!
Goodnight Saigon was good too, I'm surprised it wasn't in the honorable mentions.
"Piano Man" is his signature song. Great list. Although I was hoping to see "Tell Her About It". Love that one.
A top ten list isn't big enough
Think about this kids. I stood, no seats, in the front row at my first Billy Joel concert in 1990, the storm front tour for only $20. Awesome concert.
The Stranger, the song gives me a old west vibe with the soft, whistling opening and closes out with the same sounds. Truly one of his best albums and one of my favorite tracks
He can’t leave us😔. Protect this man at all cost
So very true. Still, it was a good post. Sick and tired of Kanye anything!
I know the feeling.
One more list from # 11 to 20 would be cool :)
"Another Top 10 Billy Joel Songs." I can see it now.
Yesssss!
Billy Joel was 34 years old when Uptown Girl was released. Elle Macpherson, who was his ex in '83, was 19 years old. Hero.
Thanks watchmojo, I think I have a new found love for Billy Joel
Billy is a master of his art.
Boss singer, performer, pianist and song writer. I agree with this list but there is so much more hits from Billy.
