See, the thing about any kind of doom metal is that it cant be commercial EVER unless you remove all the sorrowful guitar riffs and vocals and write something about pink ponies thus making it something else entirely. Just to make you know, the singer already told that they made the album a little bit more catchy than the others ones. He also wanted to make the album slower and more melodic. I forgot where I got the interview :(, but it fits with what you said, Bacchante :)
i think early katatonia and draconian are in a very different league of their own..the former being the more dark, bleak, cold doom beauty while the latter is more subtle, dark but warmer in melody structures...both have their own atmospheres...
Oh just stop with the Draconian "is seling out" comments. That's bullshit. Draconian is one of those rare bands that has managed to change their sound and still be true to their original sound. Just think about some abominations like Anathema.
Listen to The Gothic Embrace: "Jesus Christ walks the Earth, a pitiful shade of God." or "I scream with hate at the tyrant above" or from It Grieves My Heart: "Kill the bitch on the cross". Theres a lot of anti-religious statements in Draconian's music.
It's still nice and it's still certainly Draconian...just not as...arm..."leaning towards art" as the other.But that's just an opinion. I'm sure they'll come back to the pure style that consacrated them...yet I can't be care-free as I've seen the begining of the end of so many of my previouselly favorite bands starting with a "slightly different" single...I hope this is not the case! Hi paxas, my Metal Brother, nice to see you! Agreed. Draconian is one of my fav bands but are becoming more comercial and I realy dont like that. I loved Turning Season Within anyway, but this song realy lacks atmosphere and deepness. As paxas sayd, it lacks soul. But arent singles supposed to be like that, comercial stuff required by their contract? I hope that the next album doesnt suffer from this comercial syndrom.
