I love to carve wood spirits! I've moved from Ohio to Michigan to live with my mom. She's 91 years old and legally deaf. She has a cochlear implant. I've left all my carving tools in Ohio. We plan on traveling down to Ohio, so I can pick up some of my plants and carving tools. I don't have much time to work on my hobbies, but I'm sure that I'll have time after I settle in. My mom's "cabin" has a lot of space. Before my dad passed away, he added a three car garage and above it he built a three bedroom and shower.
I watch other carvers, and they are talented, but I love the way you do your eyes the best, they are crisp, clean and look pretty simple to make. GREAT technique!!!!!
I really love your fun "out & about" videos. Your high speed adventure really go well with your calm no nonsense carving instructions. Thanks for doing such a good job!
I’ve been watching you for years now Doug. I actually used one of your videos (stopping, scrolling back, re starting) to carve my very first carving. I use the step by step process to making the face then just let the personality come out as I go. We appreciate the time and effort as well as your talent that you put into these videos.
My daughter joined her FFA club at school and brought home 2 chickens and I absolutely love watching them bopping around the backyard. I wish the video came out a few weeks ago I just got back from camping. Thanks
Wow, This has become some seriously highfalutin wood carving. I am very impressed. Knives and gouges and chisels. We grew up back in the 50s and 60s whittling sticks into spirits and gnomes with just a pocket knife. You fellows nowadays have taken it to a whole new level.
Thanks Doug. Iove the slow and steady carves. The eyes are a problem I have, so I will be playing your video over and over again so I can try step by step to fix my spirits eyes. Thanks again
This time I'm seeing good use for gourge and as you said before it's not just the tools but they adding speed I'm really enjoying these lessons and hopefully I'm going to apply your teaching to my pleasure pass time Thanks 👍
I just rewatched this and did my second carve!!! Loving it 😄 thanks Doug, you make it so much easier and faster having already worked it all out for us beginners. Cheers from Australia 🍻 🌏
Watching the beginning of this, I thought of Michelangelo's saying. The sculpture is already complete within the block of marble, I just had to chisel away the extra bits (a little bit of paraphrasing, I am sure). -- The Wood Spirit was already in the stick. You just had to remove the extra wood for everyone to see him.
Thanks for your pleasant videos, Doug. I live in Sweden, and I didn't know that I was capable of carving this kind of things until your videos inspired me to try! I have now carved a couple of wood spirits and a "little man". Started out just a week ago. And they look just awesome!! Thanks for the inspiration!!
You the man, Doug. I always look forward to your video's your such an inspiration to all who follow and watch you. Thank you so much for your inspirational video's.
Thank you Doug, for another great and very helpful vid. I love them all from beginning to end! Each of your carvings I've tried to imitate has turned out great, so you must be doing something right.
Wow! One of the best videos shown how to carve a wood spirit. Great techniques and skills! Can you show us in some future videos how to make a wood spirit with knife only? Thanks!
I love watching you carve, Doug. I wish I was half as good at it. I know it takes time to get this good. No one starts out with this much talent. I should start, now, at 50 and see if I can make it before I'm older and dead. Lol.
I've been a competitive wildfowl and Kentucky Rifle builder for years. Thank you. In an hour I learned much from your sculpturing technique that might have enhanced some of my finished pieces.
Hey Doug, loved the long drive out just to find a little stick. What a great, fun project. Think I’ll jump in the Land Rover and find me a stick or two.
Haha fantastic to see and hear you! Last year we went for a holiday to Sweden and made a walkingstick myself. I ended in a nearby hospital with a 2 inch cut in my thumb. It has to be stitched. 🤐. So we just picked up many blueberries.
That was a delight. Using a stick makes this feel like an accessible project. Thanks for taking the time to make the video after posting on your instagram.
I make walking sticks and have watched several wood spirit videos. I just saved your great video. You make it so easy to follow along, and relaxing to watch. Thanx for a really great video.
Unbelievable sculpting. Stumbled on to this. You can see the face most can't. I surely can't. Never drew to well either except for prints for construction. I commend you for your craft, excellent 👍
A lot of fun to see this. Back, in the late 80s, early 90s there was a guy who carved these with a Dremel and sold them in a Utah mall at Christmas time. That one in the background looks just like his.
Thank you Doug. Was waiting some carve from a cylinder piece and not from a squared one. Like always i love also everything in between. Your editing, nature. Everything. Thank you
Love carving found wood. I do keep a folding saw in my truck😂 I’m using gouges more and more and a good V tool is your friend. Sharp knives is a beautiful thing👍
" OK " very special toilet lid .You could carve something on the lid cover to make it really special but it is already. I'm just enjoying the results of my 2 little bears .Try to match your work did good but didn't get the eyes right but great for beginners. I'll try this after I finish the mouse Alex taught Stewart Little it half done and you're easier to follow as a teacher but something to learn and have fun from you both. I'm saying thank you for teaching me and great chicken door.
Hi Doug such a good carving I love it it's so beautiful that'd be nice walking stick you're doing such a awesome job keep going and carve something we never see before I know you can do that you're so talented take care of Doug.
You surely make it look a lot easier than it is. Definitely a soothing and satisfying hobby. I've got a ways to go before I'm close to this level. But I will enjoy the journey. Great video, cheers.
You’re like the Bob Ross of wood carving and it’s awesome

Thanks Doug. Iove the slow and steady carves. The eyes are a problem I have, so I will be playing your video over and over again so I can try step by step to fix my spirits eyes. Thanks again
