- I took the San Siro Stadium Tour during a recent visit to Milan. It's an incredible stadium that's home to Inter Milan and AC Milan.
Despite being such a big, famous and atmospheric stadium, there's definitely some areas that need improvement!

I'd definitely recommend the San Siro for a match and stadium tour. HOWEVER, there are certainly parts of the stadium that require major renovations. Especially the toilets.

Hi Sam I'm Italian and an Interista as well. I used to follow Inter at San Siro for years. Think that I readed who SS Museum it's the first (or the 2nd...) most visited museum of the whole city. Learning a little of San Siro stadium history let you the skills to recognise and see even the original structures of 1927 and each other developments. This is very cool. San Siro is a "matrioska" stadium where every new develpment conteins the former structures.
Also the player who's the stadium is titled : Giuseppe Meazza is iconic. Meazza maybe the best Italian player of every time was the very first football star ever like the ones of today just on '30 of the last century
He was testimonial for advertising, he frequented beatiful women and drove expensive cars and by the way was a superbe striker as well...
Unfortunately The stadium is owned by the major of Milan and because of him we are struggling a lot , for example the renovation (not only the toilets) cost more than build a new stadium … and there are so many other issues … like the burocraty of Italy

Im Milan fan since 2012 and my dad is since 1980s. Even though we are from Poland we've manage to go on San Siro before and as you said it's not great.
The problem with the stadium is that nor Milan nor Inter are the owners of it. It belongs to the city and neither of clubs want to buy it or put money into renovation because it make more sense to buy land somewhere else and build modern stadium at this point.
Milan owners actually did make a move in the last weeks to buy new land close to San Siro called "La Maura" because there is already a track for horse races there and the land itself is marked as "sport/entertainment" so they could skip the paperworks and dealing with corruption in Italian courts etc and go on to build just like that.
This is also a problem in all of Italy tbf. Napoli, Roma, Fiorentina, Cagliari and other clubs wanted to build their OWN and new stadiums for years but they just ran into a bureaucracy wall. Only Juventus could afford a brand new stadium on their own, Atalanta made some improvments to their old one.
It's quite sad that those legendary stadiums will be demolish because of things not related to football.

I'm a Salvadoran who has had family members support Both AC & Inter Milan passionately since the 1980's, but it's tragic how for all the long in the club, only me and a few members actually care about the fate of the San Siro
Ahah it's not a matter of "corruption in italian courts", it's burocracy. You guys watched too many movies about mafia
I got to go to a game in October last year (Inter 2-0 Salernitana) and it was just unreal. Yes, the stadium looks a bit tired and 'dated' by modern standards compared to other teams, but the second you walk out of that stairwell and see the inside of the stadium it's just the most awe-inspiring sight. The atmosphere of a sold-out San Siro, combined with the amount of history that those stands have borne witness to, is unlike anything i've ever felt and definitely has me wanting to go back. Also, compared to the UK, buying matchday tickets is so easy and far cheaper in many cases. If you're ever in Milan when a match is on, I highly recommend a trip.
I've born in Milan, grow up here. Inter fan since my father was born. I always remember when I was a kid, the emotions I had when I was climbing the San Siro's stairs and I could admire 80 thousand people all together. Still now, I always like to get to San Siro when is already full crowded, just to feel that feeling...

Italy biggest issue is the strict bureaucracy, which doesn’t allow fast improvements such new facilities constructions. Indeed, AC Milan is considering other suburban area as Sesto San Giovanni, just outside the hinterland of the city, for the new potential stadium allocation. We’ll see how things are going to improve in the next… decade.
nonsense, reliable companies, with money, a credible project and certain properties have built their new stadium and even quickly a long time ago, in milan, rome and naples everything is collapsing and it's a shame
I think “La Maura” zone will be the better option. I am Milan fan, i love san siro for history, but our club must go to the future. We can’t afford nothing in modern football. We need a new stadium 🏟

The local councils own the grounds in Italy making almost impossible to do anything with the stadiums. Juventus an exception to the rule, managed to break away and build their own stadium

Milan proposed 3 different option to milan's municipality and today they are still making table of work with the citizen (basically another couple of year lost for nothing)
Only Juventus was able to build his stadium thanks the agnelli connection with politician. Atalanta rebuilt and bought their stadium from the city.
But yeah people prefer a s.siro (with the upper part inutilesed from years due to the poor stability of the structure) instead that a new proper stadium
@@rimasto3692 this is also not entirely true, the real problem that you call bureaucracy is made up of many factors, the municipality of milan has asked and demands from milan and inter ethically sustainable projects and their impact on the environment and on the citizens of the area, the biggest problem it is the certainty of not starting projects and leaving them unfinished because the properties of these 2 clubs are not solid and stable, the municipality wants to know, for example, from the Inter Chinese how many years the property will still have, these companies are also out of money and the 'inter won't finance it because they are already full of debts, how should the municipality of milan trust them? Always the usual nonsense about Juventus, but what political connections? 12 years ago the club presented a solid, eco-sustainable and avant-garde project for the times and a financing plan and cost repayment solvency, guaranteed a family property that would not have sold the club 2 years later to Chinese or similar funds with halfway through the project, this is the point, the land to buy is not all public administration, the inter is looking at a private one, last thing not only juve and atalanta have their own stadium, however we should be ashamed to ask for the allotment of the Europeans or whatever when the stadiums of the biggest cities are falling apart and without facilities
Me and my father (from the Netherlands) went to see Internazionale - Fiorentina last year and we had such a great experience. The people in Italy were very friendly and we had a great reception despite being 2 ‘outsiders’. One of the things that really stood out was the small amount of police officers. I am not even exaggerating when I say are 10 times more police officers in a Dutch football match than there were at San Siro. The stadium looked outdated yes but it has its charm. Amazing atmosphere, I’m glad me and my father could witness it as it was one of the last things we did together. If you get the chance, please go visit a match there! and do not buy a ticket via a booking site, we bought tickets via the site from Inter and saved about 320 euro because of it

I watched Spurs lose to AC there a few weeks ago. It was a bucket list stadium for me. I was with an Italian colleague & sat right next to the Curva sud. Those boys know how to create an atmosphere 👏👏. Any footie fan should try to make a visit if they can - iconic stadium even with the bits that need fixing 😉
Although it’s sad to see the deterioration or the San Siro, it’s easy to forget that it’s used a lot more than most stadiums. 2 teams, both playing in Europe every season too, it’s used multiple times every week unlike the average stadium which is used 40 times a season
It's a common problem in Italy, but the San Siro has actually been somewhat upgraded with new turnstiles etc I think. In Verona and Genoa they still had Italia 1990 stickers and signage on the seats and around the stadium a few years ago.

I just made the same point about Verona. In Genoa, the toilets didn't even have running water. Italian grounds are like an ageing film star - look great from a distance, but you can really see the cracks up close.
I hope Italian football makes a comeback. Even in the transfer market Italian football is clearly lacking, no money to spend.
Inter v United European Cup 1/4 final 1999. Never been to any other stadium that had that "presence" as you approached it. Just staggering. Magnificent atmosphere inside the ground And when Inter scored to make the aggregate 2-1 to United, it just notched itself up to 150%. The amount of crap hurled at us Reds in the lower tier from the tiers above was incredible. But when Scholes scored in front of us. 95% of the ground just went silent and stayed silent until the final whistle. Wonderful memories.
As someone who grew up with Football Italia I really hope they find a way to modernise and stay. This ground is iconic, home to the great Paolo Maldini and I’d hate to see it go. We’re losing iconic stadiums all over Europe and whole progress is progress, it’s nice when some things don’t change.

The stadium was like this 20 years ago, nothing has changed. They have to redevelop soon, but, the in game atmosphere is still something special
Great to see a club tour guide that really knows the club history. She was very friendly in answering your questions. Build regulations for stadium vary from country to country. If anything the ultras of both Milan clubs probably love the San Siro stadium in their own way just for the character. We'll done for putting the video up.

We definitively need a new stadium. Not only for comfort but also economically, its not possible to stay competitive and still be self sustainable without it

It is really strange that clubs like Roma and Lazio, Sampdoria and Genoa or Milan and Inter share a stadium between them. Imagine if Arsenal and Tottenham or Celtic and Rangers played at the same stadium. That would not work out well.
I remember when Liverpool and Everton had a joint stadium project. The fans of both clubs did not like the idea at all and so it was quite quickly rejected, even though the rivalry between these two clubs is nothing compared to the rivalry between Milan and Inter.

The rivalry between Milan and Inter is not hatred at all as both teams are like cousins, even the fans support the basketball team from Milano together when it plays in basket Euroleague. Ill list you few of the most hatred rivalries in Italy below.
Napoli - Roma
Napoli - Salernitana
Roma - Lazio
Catania - Palermo
Napoli - Juventus
Atalanta - Brescia
And ofcourse almost every team when it plays against Juventus, as Juve is the most supported and most hated team at the same time in Italy.
Those ones are way more hatred and intense than Milan and Inter.

It will make derby day more interesting. Plus Ac Milan and Inter Milan rivaly is actually a friendly rivalry. It doesn't have hatred unlike the north London derby or the Rome derby or Old Firm Derby.

The issue with San Siro but more over in Italy is that stadiums are owned by councils and because of the shit bureaucracy there, teams find it hard to get or have their own stadium. At the time when having own stadium didn’t matter teams from same city thought and decided to play in the same stadium because it would have been a waste to play every two weeks but today with all the games and profits a stadium for each is needed. San Siro but like other stadiums have history but if you ask me I wouldn’t think a second to move out or demolish them because what makes history is the teams that play in them but unfortunately stadium owners are so greedy and victim like it’s happening with San Siro that it’s making it impossible for teams to catch up with the rest of the world.

As a Milan fan, great work on the video. I pains me to see how run down our beloved San Siro is, but you are spot on. The municipality owns the thing and won't invest properly in its maintenance. I understand though that the municipality has other priorities and that a stadium is expensive, especially today with the expected quality. For this reason I believe, we must leave the San Siro. We need a stadium we can own. We also need it to be separate to our interista cousins. I believe we both agree here and see benefits, particularly financially. Forza Milan 🔴⚫.
Do you think the club's could rebuild an stand each in the meantime?
As an Inter fan, we have been inconsistent over the last 5-7 years and was playing Europa League at one point. Meaning that Inter would never fill a 80k stadium.
San Siro being rejuvenated would be a beautiful sight. I last saw the San Siro in 2015. Could the two clubs work together to upgrade the stadium?
@@SynchroM3h I think it's better for us to move on. It's unfortunate to see how the proposed new San Siro isn't working out. But to be honest I believe we both win by having our stadium.
Inter right now has immense dept that is impacting any decisions regarding renovations and who knows how Cardinale will react to this dreadful season. Point is anything can happen and we each have our own strategies.
We also need to compete against EPL teams. Having our own stadium will allow us have better revenues from ticket sales.
Top video, I did the San Siro 12 months ago for an AC Milan game and it is breathtaking on first view and the atmosphere is electric but sadly as you highlighted, inside is dated, but it's crazy that both clubs can't even re-paint the seats.

Yeah most Italian Stadiums are owned by the Comune so they can't rebuild it unnlike Juventus having their own Stadium (Juventus Stadium), this is why clubs in Italy have hard to time earning money for the club and buying good players

We went for the England game last year and did the tour. As iconic as it is the ground is knackered, the guide told us the 2 blocks behind the goal in the top tier are shut because it flexes when fans are in them so they can't open them for safety reasons. Off to Napoli for the next international but stopping in Rome so hoping to go see the Stadio Olimpico too
Olimpico is great, watched us lose. 4-0 to Lazio but atmosphere including milan curva sud was so good. Nothing beats san siro for atmosphere and spectacle.
I saw AC Milan v Lazio in 2009 at the San Siro and even then it looked dated. Me and my mate bought cheap tickets right in the God's. For some reason we couldn't get in with our tickets as they wouldn't scan, but a stewart moved us to better (More expensive) seats at no extra charge. Me and my mate we're amused seeing signs for Nottingham (Where we're from) on the big screen. AC Milan were founded by Herbert Kilpin who was from Nottingham. In Nottingham, there is a craft beer bar that bears his name.
I was last there three years ago and it looks exactly the same. Nice to see the old stadium. I’m going on a tour of anfield tomorrow.

I am an Inter tifosi since 2015 I been to San Siro 5 times and every experience was amazing but this was the first time seeing it like this and its crazy and shocking how most fans dont even notice the situation the stadium is in during matchdays 😮

I am from Milan. You are correct basically all football stadiums that clubs in all tiers of football play in are owned by the municipal government, with the exception of Juventus, Udinese, and Atalanta. This makes revenue very difficult for a lot of clubs, even the supposedly biggest clubs (Inter, Milan, Napoli, Roma, Lazio, etc). We are by all accounts a “poor” league, most clubs struggle to break even and some clubs are even in millions of euros of debt right now. Our football infrastructure is quite poor, but yet our league attracts a lot of interest every year.
It's such a shame, but I'd love to know why it isn't still a "top" league financially as I can't understand. I grew up watching Seria A on a Sunday in England and I'd look forward to it all week, Baggio, Crespo, Del Piero, Zidane, Maldini, Vieri, Viali, Mancini, Nesta, Zanetti, I could probably go on for an hour as I absolutely loved it. I obviously have no idea about the background behind football and media deals, marketing etc, but it seems like such an easy market to sell that it should be in a better state
@@TheJuanvegas it’s not a top financial league because almost every club in all tiers of Italian football (except the ones I mentioned in my first comment) have to rent stadiums for use that owned by either the municipal or local government. They have to pay high rent fees to make it their home ground so ticketing revenues suffer a lot. Furthermore the process for a club to actually build their own stadium is almost bureaucratically impossible in Italy (see the Milan-Inter stadium talks that have been going on for literally years at this point)
Went to a game between Lazio and Sampdoria at the Olympic Stadium in Rome back in 2011. 20 €. The stadium looked a little tired. The toilettes were okay but the seating on the stadium were a little dated. Everybody were given a matchday newspaper. Most fans used them to sit on because of a lot of bird crap on the seats. But a great experience anyway. 2-1 to Lazio.
Same year I went to Milano and went to San Siro. Also got around to Arena Civica. Didn't see any game there though

I’m an Inter season ticket and i go to most home games from the UK, yes it has its issues but i love it.
You would never get a better atmosphere anywhere in the world that is better, especially the Milan derby.

I heard they are planning to hold the opening ceremony for the next Winter Olympics at the San Siro, so will they spend the money on improvements needed for that only to knock it down soon after or will they just go for the new stadium? Not sure if they would have enough time to design and build a completely new stadium with just under 3 years to go?
No way. There won't be any new stadium before early 2026.
Maybe AC Milan could start building a brand new stadium soon, now that the property should be clear and publicly known. FC Internazionale is plenty of debt, there is no clear property, and the major of Milan (and his collaborators) doesn't want to let football teams build a new stadium without a clear statement (they want to know who is the actual owner, to be sure the teams are not involved in money laundering or other criminal activities) of the society structure and economic status. This story is going on from several years
Magnificent stadium. It reminds me of Metlife here in New York/ NJ where u have lots of gray to play it neutral because 2 teams share it.
I became a fan of football in college watching games on at 4AM after the bars here in the states. Serie A was on GoalTV and San Siro was always something that called to me. I got to do this tour back in September, missed Italy vs Ukraine by a day. Stadium isn't flashy but it is truly one of one and man I hope its there forever. Such a cool place.

That's a polite way of putting it. Back in the 1980s Northampton Town FC (which shared its ground with the county cricket club) had an open air urinal.

I remember seeing pictures of old recently closed down grounds in England (maybe it was Rotherham's old stadium) and the urinals were outside and just walls, not even troughs. Just walk up to a designated pissing wall on the outdoor concourse and it would trickle into a gutter and out on the street. Working class people in England seem(ed?) to be treated like cattle with no dignity.

I took a kids team there many years ago (early 2000s) to watch Inter v Juve. We were directly above the Juve fans and fireworks were hurtling up and landing around us - something that definitely wasn't on the risk assessment. A couple of the kids annoyed the Inter fans by purchasing Milan merchandise from the club shop pre match, which had been blacked out and was behind glass. We all found the match experience amazing (Inter won 3-0 if I remember correctly, Christian Vieri was unplayable), but the ground was extremely dilapidated. Highlight for me as the son of a referee was watching Pierluigi Collina, who took no nonsense from the players.

Those "hole in the ground" toilets seem to be pretty common in Italy. I`ve been to several Italian stadiums, including Pisa, Bologna, Lecce and Atalanta`s old stadium, following Tranmere around in the 90s for the Anglo Italian Cup and all of them had that type of toilet as did a lot of bars, railway stations etc. They seem weird to us but it`s looks like they are not that unusual in Italy.
back in the 60' 70' ad 80' was quite common indeed, not that much today fortunately.
They’re still common in a lot of Middle Eastern / African countries but not heard of many European countries still rocking squat toilets
The “Turkish” restrooms are really common in Italy for communal bathrooms as they are super easy to clean

I have finally managed to watch a game at San Siro last year, it was AC Milan v Monza, and my god the place looked better than advertised. Been waiting to see one AC Milan game live for well over 25 years, since I was a small child :)

You're spot on, a beautiful stadium but it is so outdated, went there last April to watch the Milan derby and at half time I went to buy a drink, there was only 4 areas in the whole ground to buy food and drink, I left as soon as it was half time and didn't return to my seat until the 60th minute 🤦♂️

Saw a game there and it's a great stadium to watch a game, the atmosphere is amazing and it's iconic, but I agree the facilities are pretty grim. I hope they renovate it rather than knocking it down and building a new one but suspect they will ultimately do that since it's not just nasty toilets, there's very little in the way of refreshment outlets or corporate boxes so they must be missing out on a ton of revenue.

Bel video complimenti fa piacere che parli bene di SAN Siro ovviamente lo stadio ha delle pecche ed è, in confronto ad altri stadi europei, datato ma nel suo ha una magia che in altri stadi nn ho trovato forse il vecchio Wembley gli si avvicina io ci sono stato nel 1995 detto questo San Siro rimane magico e l'atmosfera che ha all'interno nn ha eguali
As an Italian Milan supporter who’s traveled to England many times. I prefer the rustic character of the San Siro. It’s a temple. It’s classic vibes make up for the lack of luxury. Last time I was in Manchester I spoke to a City fan in his 50s and he talked about how he missed the atmosphere at Main Road. Micah Richards also said he misses Main Road because of its authenticity. Some Serie A stadiums need updating, I personally hope they leave San Siro alone.

Sadly it's the same all across Italy. Improvements were made for the world cup in 1990, and they just left everything to rot after that. I went to Verona (much more imposing in person than on TV) around five years ago, and the stadium still had Italia '90 signage up. I think it's just what Italians are used to though, and don't expect any different.
I used to live 1 Km from the stadium, as I lad, every Sunday, I would walk with my father to watch my team's games. Now, I live abroad and obviously that stadium still holds an enormous sentimental value to me. That said, it's beyond vast improvements. It needs to be leveled and built anew. Yes, it's historic but so was Wembley.
Please, don´t be like the Britons. Don´t tear down this beautiful, historic building. From Spain I say you can do better, my Italian friends, this stadium could be renovated.
I would prefer if they modernize the stadium, San Siro is so iconic and so imposing I don't see any new stadium comparing to it, but I get that the restrictions that the municipality puts in place makes such projects almost impossible.
So far it looks like the project for the new shared stadium is no longer doable given Inter's financial woes, so it looks like Milan will probably look to build one alone although probably a bit smaller and probably less ambitious.
Iconic stadiums like that aren’t quick to try and modernise! So much history there though
I can never understand how two teams could ever share stadiums, especially two great rivals.
Inter was playing in its own stadium, which was smaller, so it made sense to share a bigger stadium. I see it no different than Giants and the NY Jets of NFL sharing Giants Stadium and MetLife Stadium.
@@charlesray9674 In England a clubs stadium is all part of a clubs individual identity and history, it would never happen here.
@Richard Humphrey But football is one of the UK's favorite past times, I wouldn't expect clubs to share anything. I'm not sure when professional football began in Italy, but cities that have more than one team would usually share a stadium since it is very rare for clubs to outright own their stadiums. I believe both teams shared the San Siro since 1947 (which I think football was still played by amateurs).
In Milan actually they are planning to build a new stadium or replacing this one.
Such a shame to see the stadium being so looked after because in terms of history, atmosphere etc its right up there with the best

Such a shame. From the outside and on TV the stadium looks like a dream, it is the stadium that appealed most to me during my teen years, even ahead of Wembley, Nou Camp, etc. Almost impossible to redevelop because the town council is playing hard ball and negotiations are further complicated by the involvement of two clubs rather than one. Milan need to move out fast, they can't wait for Inter to resolve their debt issues. By the time Inter mend their finances that train will have been missed.

I love the San Siro how it is, no one should change anything, cause it shouldn’t be a place for the rich or a place of innovation, it should be a place for nostalgic people who love soccer.

I like the stadium its iconic I like when stadiums look different from each other its better than the newer bowl type of stadiums which all look the same. they should keep the design its iconic but yea just keep it up to date like what we do with the medieval buildings in the European old cities

Have to say I dont agree with the take here. For me its the best stadium Ive been to across Europe in terms of feel and atmosphere, absolutely incredible. The fact that its not up to EPL corporate standards adds to the charm. Could do with some stuff being upgraded but its an incredible stadium
It has a lot of charm but the only option would be if we where able to buy san siro. We lose out on so much revenue and in today and age with ffp and PL domination we absolutely need that extra revenue to be competitive and self sustainable

You should visit Alliance Stadium of Juventus. That is the best atmosphere in Italy and one of the most advanced stadiums in europe

It is owned by the commune of milan, ac milan used to own it but donated it to the commune many decades ago, and the commune decided to "thank" us by making our cross city rivals also play there

The story that I had heard about Leonardo's horse is that it was in fact completed, unlike many of his other projects, and cast in bronze. But that some time later Milan was at war with someone or other, and were short on supplies, so they decided to melt it down and make cannonballs out of it. But I don't know if this is true or not.

San Siro was very dirty and run down when I visited in 2005. The museum looks to have been extended/improved, changing rooms are very different too from footage shown.
