Rufinka/ Rufie was a real person .She lived around Smolyan in a small village called Poprelka like 150 years ago. That is how old the song is. Her grave is there . The song is sad. Rufinka was very Ill and she died young. The movies name is ' The end of the song/ Краят на песента". In a few words the movie is about a man who loved a woman, but was accused of robbery that he didn't do, so he run away. The man can just stay and listen the song. Nobody gonna recognize him. But he fill so sad, the song is so close to his heart, he decides to reveal himself, even he knew that this is the end for him. When he went out of village, he send the horse away, to protect animal from the bullets.
Also in the movie, the character is a sheppard and loves to be free and let his voice roam the mountain. After he was accused of robbery, he had to hide in the forest and couldn'tsing, because they would find him. So in this moment, knowing his love is dead, he has nothing to lose anymore and lets his voice be free one last time. You were on point. It is a sad song, it is a movie, and it is about resistance. Bulgaria was under Ottoman rule for 500 years, during which our very culture was on the brink of extinction. I encourage you to look into it further. Other people have commented about who Rufinka was, but nobody mentioned the resistance thing so I felt obliged to.
the bagpipe guy is a legend actually.Its Bai Dafo Trendafilov,who died in 2010 ,91 years old,one of our best players,with an incredible career playin those pipes for more than 8 decades(since childhood).This movie was made around the time I was born-1971.
As the others said, this is a traditional Bulgarian song from the region of the Rodopa mountain (hence the pipes). The song is about an young girl called Rufinka (she was a real person, named Rufie), who was very sick and was about to die. The song is basically a conversation between the sick girl and her mother that's trying to comfort her. The song is very sad because it's a spring time, the nature around her is awaking up after the winter, and in the same time Rufinka knows that she'll go to her grave because of the illness. What about the scene, it's from a movie called "The end of the song", based on a novel written by the Bulgarian writer Nikolay Haytov. It's about a young lad called Ibriam Ali (the guy with the beard), he was accused of a crime he didn't commit. While trying to clear his name and the avenge the accusation, Ibriam commits other crimes, so he becomes an outlaw who is chased, and has no chance to live a normal life any more. That particular song about Rufinka is very special for him, he loves to sing it. So he goes to that bar with a friend, and since he is an outlaw, he has to keep a low profile. But suddenly the people around him start to sing the song about Rufinka. He hesitates initially, but he just can't help it, and starts to sing along, knowing that he'll be recognized (that's why the others stopped to sing). But he does not care anymore, and instead of running away, he asks for more wine. The bartender sent the boy to run to call the cops instead of to bring more wine, and in the end when Ibriam leaves the bar, he gets chased and killed. So basically Ibriam lost his life for singing that song. If he didn't sing that song there, he wouldn't be recognized and he would probably live another day. But the song overpowered him, he blew away his cover and he was killed for that. And that's the meaning of the novel (and the movie), how a beautiful sad song overpowered a man. And what makes this scene even more powerful is the fact that the actor Vasil Mihaylov is not a professional singer, he's an actor, but despite that he pulled this amazing performance...
That was the favorite song of my grand grandmother. Rhodope song sang from male typically. It brings tears to us Rhodope people 👌😭. It means that the girl called Rofinka is going to die and she is taking good by with her mother. She is saying to tell the mother that she can't take anything with her and she want to give all she have to a girl from the village, even her beloved. She is crying and says that the spring is coming and everything starts to come up from the ground and sand, but she is going down there in the ground. The girl is real and she lived in a Rhodope village, there's is a flower called after her and it's found only in this one village. On the way to this place the hight mountains keeps Rufinka for ever in peace. 🥀😊 In a fact my grandfather sings this song in original even better.

The song tells the story of Rofinka who is in her death bed and her mother is asking her if she is scared and sorry that she is dying so young. When they couldn't arrest him, they arrested his mother, they tortured her to give up her son, but she didn't and eventually she died. That drove Ibryam over the edge. So Ibryam snuck into the man's house, but didn't hurt him. Nobody knows how he scared him, but he was deeply traumatised and hung himself a month later.
I am a traditional rodope bagpipe player and the song tells for a girl named rufinka that was ill and near the death. So near her wasnt anybody to be with her. Only her mother was there and she was giving her a cup of water while she was asking rufinka what is more important for her, her clothes or her world. So rufinka answered that her clothes arent important, but her world is the most important thing to her. Sadly she said that spring has came and everything is coming from the dirt, but he will go soon into the dirt.

This is a film with our great artist Vasil Mihailov - "The End of the Song".
Bulgaria was 500 years under Turkish slavery and the Turks tried to assimilate us to accept Islam and forget our language and culture and we fought every day with them not to allow this. This film tells the story of Ibryam Ali and the beautiful Naime (early 20th century) who love each other. Although the girl's father is against their love, they decide to get married. Ali is accused of stealing from the wealthy Deli Mehmed, with whom he haggled, and is arrested. The thief turns out to be the son of Deli Mehmed, but he does not drop his accusation from Ali. Ali escapes from arrest, and between him and Deli Mehmed, enmity and a struggle for revenge flare up. Deli Mehmed loses his mind and hangs himself, and Ali is forced to flee. After two years, when he returns to his home village, he finds out that Naime has died. Ali is ambushed while singing his favorite song for Rufinka.

You were on point. It is a sad song, it is a movie, and it is about resistance. Bulgaria was under Ottoman rule for 500 years, during which our very culture was on the brink of extinction. I encourage you to look into it further. Other people have commented about who Rufinka was, but nobody mentioned the resistance thing so I felt obliged to.

the bagpipe guy is a legend actually.Its Bai Dafo Trendafilov,who died in 2010 ,91 years old,one of our best players,with an incredible career playin those pipes for more than 8 decades(since childhood).This movie was made around the time I was born-1971.
As the others said, this is a traditional Bulgarian song from the region of the Rodopa mountain (hence the pipes).
The song is about an young girl called Rufinka (she was a real person, named Rufie), who was very sick and was about to die.
The song is basically a conversation between the sick girl and her mother that's trying to comfort her.
The song is very sad because it's a spring time, the nature around her is awaking up after the winter, and in the same time Rufinka knows that she'll go to her grave because of the illness.
What about the scene, it's from a movie called "The end of the song", based on a novel written by the Bulgarian writer Nikolay Haytov.
It's about a young lad called Ibriam Ali (the guy with the beard), he was accused of a crime he didn't commit.
While trying to clear his name and the avenge the accusation, Ibriam commits other crimes, so he becomes an outlaw who is chased, and has no chance to live a normal life any more.
That particular song about Rufinka is very special for him, he loves to sing it.
So he goes to that bar with a friend, and since he is an outlaw, he has to keep a low profile.
But suddenly the people around him start to sing the song about Rufinka.
He hesitates initially, but he just can't help it, and starts to sing along, knowing that he'll be recognized (that's why the others stopped to sing).
But he does not care anymore, and instead of running away, he asks for more wine.
The bartender sent the boy to run to call the cops instead of to bring more wine, and in the end when Ibriam leaves the bar, he gets chased and killed.
So basically Ibriam lost his life for singing that song. If he didn't sing that song there, he wouldn't be recognized and he would probably live another day.
But the song overpowered him, he blew away his cover and he was killed for that.
And that's the meaning of the novel (and the movie), how a beautiful sad song overpowered a man.
And what makes this scene even more powerful is the fact that the actor Vasil Mihaylov is not a professional singer, he's an actor, but despite that he pulled this amazing performance...

That was the favorite song of my grand grandmother. Rhodope song sang from male typically. It brings tears to us Rhodope people 👌😭.
It means that the girl called Rofinka is going to die and she is taking good by with her mother. She is saying to tell the mother that she can't take anything with her and she want to give all she have to a girl from the village, even her beloved. She is crying and says that the spring is coming and everything starts to come up from the ground and sand, but she is going down there in the ground.
The girl is real and she lived in a Rhodope village, there's is a flower called after her and it's found only in this one village. On the way to this place the hight mountains keeps Rufinka for ever in peace. 🥀😊
In a fact my grandfather sings this song in original even better.

In short, the song is about a maiden who is fallen ill. Her name is Rofinka. The song tells the story of Rofinka who is in her death bed and her mother is asking her if she is scared and sorry that she is dying so young. But the answer of Ronfinka is that she isn’t scared, nor sorry about her fate. The only thing she is sorry about is that she couldn’t marry but she was preparing her dowry her entire life and now it will stay in her chests getting mouldy, while she is lying under the ground, suppressed by soil.
It’s worth mentioning that Rofinka is a real person and her grave is in Rhodope Mountains.

Rufinka is pomak song.The name of the girl is Rufie from a village called Poprelka.The story in the film resembles the real life story.Real Rufinka was engaged to be married to Ali Kichukov,but she unfortunayely died and he lived till 100 years of age.The guy in the film is Ibrahim Ali bulgarian pomak,honest young man who was wrongly accused of a crime that he didn't commit. After long run he returned but his love passed away.He went to the pub and started singing in the ,people recognised him and informed the authorities and they shot him.The grave of Rufie is still some where in the village of Poprelka.Go and find it ,it will be a great experience for you.Pomaks are ethnic Bulgarians who were forced to accept Islam hundreds years ago. They are Muslims with Muslim names but speak Bulgarian.

He leaves for many years and returns to his village after a tiresome run. He is known for his distinctive voice. Rufinka is his favorite song. So he couldn't keep it and starts singing in the pub. The pub owner recognizes him from his voice and calls the cops. Afterwards he senses the ambush and faces his end, singing. The scene with the horse represents life and death. Past and present. He leaves the horse in order not to get killed.
He was accused of a crime he didn't commit, so he ran away and became an outlaw. This was his favourite song, and "He sang it like no one else". That's how they recognized him.

When they couldn't arrest him, they arrested his mother, they tortured her to give up her son, but she didn't and eventually she died. That drove Ibryam over the edge. So Ibryam snuck into the man's house, but didn't hurt him. Nobody knows how he scared him, but he was deeply traumatised and hung himself a month later.
I am a traditional rodope bagpipe player and the song tells for a girl named rufinka that was ill and near the death. So near her wasnt anybody to be with her. Only her mother was there and she was giving her a cup of water while she was asking rufinka what is more important for her, her clothes or her world. So rufinka answered that her clothes arent important, but her world is the most important thing to her. Sadly she said that spring has came and everything is coming from the dirt, but he will go soon into the dirt.

A 1971 film. The man who stands up on his own and starts singing, drowning out everyone else, is a haidutin - a voivode (a Bulgarian hero who fights against the cruelty and slavery of the Ottoman Empire).

Leaving the village, our hero, feeling that they are waiting for him, releases his horse so as not to get hurt with it.

Basically it is about a Bandit who hides from society but travels back to his village incognito for some reason (you can find it in the tale). Unfortunately ,he is recognised for his good singing by the police force (look at 6:00 , It is the sheriff looking at him) and consequently shot dead in the end.
The song itself is about a mother speaking to her daughter (Roufinka is the name of the daugher) who is dying from sickness. Here is the translation:

This song is traditional! You don't have such words in your language to translate it ... A very heavy song! The man is tired of repression, do you know why he is on a donkey, because under Turkish slavery that lasted more than 500 years he was not allowed to ride a horse. One of the most important thing in the song is that the mother is not specificly entitled as Rofinka's actual mother [but her birth mother non the less (if you catch my point for the meening and deepnes of the song)], and the drowning part is equaly important !! Pritty much all of bulgarian songs have secret meaning wich was the only way in those periods to keep the Christian faith coz of the Catholics and Ottomanic Empire ...
