- Summer of '42 is a 1971 American coming-of-age comedy-drama film based on the memoirs of screenwriter Herman Raucher. It tells the story of how Raucher, in his early teens on his 1942 summer vacation on Nantucket Island (off the coast of Cape Cod), embarks on a one-sided romance with a young woman, Dorothy, whose husband had gone off to fight in World War II.
The film was directed by Robert Mulligan. The film (and subsequent novel) were memoirs written by Herman Raucher; they detailed the events in his life over the course of the summer he spent on Nantucket Island in 1942 when he was fourteen years old.[3] Originally, the film was meant to be a tribute to his friend Oscar "Oscy" Seltzer, an Army medic killed in the Korean War.[3][6] Seltzer was shot dead on a battlefield in Korea whilst attending to a wounded man; this happened on Raucher's birthday, and consequently, Raucher has not celebrated a birthday since. During the course of writing the screenplay, Raucher came to the realization that despite growing up with Oscy and having bonded with him through their formative years, the two had never really had any meaningful conversations or gotten to know one another on a more personal level.[3]
Instead, Raucher decided to focus on the first major adult experience of his life, that of falling in love for the first time. The woman (named Dorothy, like her screen counterpart) was a fellow vacationer on the island whom Raucher had befriended one day when he helped her carry groceries home; he became a friend of her and her husband and helped her with chores after her husband was called to fight in World War II. Raucher went to bed with her one night when he came to visit her, arriving only minutes after she received notification of her husband's death.[3] The next morning, Raucher discovered that she had left the island, leaving behind a note for him (which is read at the end of the film and reproduced in the book). He never saw her again; his last "encounter" with her, recounted on an episode of The Mike Douglas Show, came after the film's release in 1971, when she was one of over a dozen women who wrote letters to Raucher claiming to be "his" Dorothy.[7] Raucher recognized the "real" Dorothy's handwriting, and she confirmed her identity by making references to certain events only she could have known about.[7] She told Raucher that she had lived for years with the guilt that she had potentially traumatized him and ruined his life. She told Raucher that she was glad he turned out all right, and that they had best not re-visit the past. All rights reserved to owners of music and images.
The movie, the music, a boy’s first love. Such an excellent movie that it may never be made again.
Essa Música Toca Profundamente o meu coração 😍🌹🍃🕊♥️
Today she'd have a penis and he'd be a they/them. Whatever that is.

For me....it was the summer of '64. I was 19 and she was 26. She lived across the hall from me in my apartment building. I had only moved to L.A. a few months before. We spent many an evening together. I was caught up with an older woman finding me facisnating. In 1968, she invited me to her wedding. She later even asked me to come over and see her new baby girl. We shared a special moment in time back in 1964. I will always treasure it.
Thanks for sharing ... this was a great story.
Well I was 17 and she was 26 and it was not so easy . She was married and her husband tryied to kill me ! 😂😂😂👍
❤❤❤❤❤❤❤❤❤❤Wuuuuuuaauu. Que. Experiencia. 😊😊😊😊😊😊😊😊
@@fernandomena8119 tá , e por que você não conta uma experiência tua também?
@Honest John, let's just say I'm still a gentleman even at my age now. I was 19 and certainly not that experienced, but she was very tender with me and never made me feel inadequate. It was a growing up experience for me. I was also drafted at 19 for Viet Nam, so I couldn't scoop up as much of life as I wanted. I never knew if I would even have a future. I was lucky in so many ways.
What a beautiful woman, I've had a crush 😍 in her for the last 45 years,,pure beauty! And no tatoo,, or piercings, a very natural wholesome look! And 70+ years old now, and still easy on the eyes 👀!

hahaha...cheers!
Jennifer O'Neill one of the most classically beautiful women EVER! She's 70 and still gorgeous! Doing alot of great work for veterans who have PTSD, on her horse farm in Tennessee. Devout Christian, great woman! I've read all her books. You rock, Jen!
Yes, she looks beautiful. Unfortunately, it seems that she doesn't have much acting talent.

That statement is impossible to disagree with.
Sometimes you get the perfect person to play the perfect part.... Loved it while it lasted. But slowly it's slipping into the great oblivion where people have neither the time nor the sensitivity to appreciate these finer emotions
No they still exist
There are still people who appreciate such films.
Sigh.....
@@KatrinaLeFey Por supuesto que hay muchas personas que aprecian estas películas
Jennifer O'Neill------part Portugese Brazilian, & part Northern Irish -------was just so beautiful, she took my breath away. and, every time I see this film, I'm in tears, at the end; I'm unsure as to why, but it hits me right in the heart. ------------------WolfSky9, 72 y/o
Same feelings, of how I wasted my life, 68 thru 69, experiencing my first true love that broke my heart. It would make a great movie about wasted love.
@Wolfsky9
She was also part Spanish as well
Her mother was from England
Forever one of the most special movies ever.
Concordo plenamente com você
My summer of 42 was with my Spanish teacher in high school, she was 27 I was16. Will never forget her, ever!
More than just a sweet memory; a young man with dreams he hadn't seen yet. That is a rearview mirror filled with faces and . . .
The movie the theme, the music of Michel Legrand. Another era. Unforgettable.
so true. film and music from another time. Very beautiful
Make peace not War !
I was 12 when this movie came out and what I would give to go back to the early 70's.
Eu também
Michael Le’Grande is incomparable.
I agree !
Le Grand
Yes, that is the most beautiful part of the film. Michel Legrand’s music. Not Jennifer O’Neil who, did not create anything beautiful.
For a man watching this film, it has captured the feelings of first time love so perfectly it's hard to put into words.....but that beauty is that of a fallen Angel, and combined with the incredible music which I played at my father's funeral...it takes us all back to days when it seemed alot simpler and where there was so much to look forward too
Sorry to hear your dad passed Darren , this is a beautiful masterpiece of music 🎶. I bet he was a great man 🙌
@@go-goakins1489 thankyou buddy.
He had his strengths and weaknesses like us all. I appreciate your sentiments..I have twin boys of 12 and for them the journey is just starting..,.and it's not over for dad just yet 😜.

My summer of 42 started in the summer of 1977. I was 16 and met Penny. She was 30. We eventually became EMT/Paramedic partners working on the ambulance together for many years.
I knew Penny for 43 great years. We lived together for 30 years, married 15 of them ( I was her second husband).
Unfortunately, Penny died suddenly in 2020. I can tell you they don't women like Penny.
I love and miss you, my wonderful wife. But life goes on.
On Jan.8,1972 until Aug. 13, 1972 I found the love of my life for a short time. We were in the Air Force. The first time I took to dinner at Christie’s in San Antonio, than a day later I took her to see: Summer of ‘42. We felt in love for seven months I was in heaven until we got orders for overseas, on Aug. 13, 1972 she left for Germany and I for Japan. 18 months later I came home in May 5, 1974. In May 8, 1974 a friend wrote to tell me my girlfriend was marrying someone else, my life has been over since than I try dating but not the same for me I married and marriage felt after 11 years now for the past 37 years I’ve been alone still thinking of my first love. There was a saying for this movie, Summer of 42, was, “In everyone’s life there’s a Summer of 42,” for me yes and always will be.
There's an old saying never meet your heroes. Sometimes they will disappoint. The same can be said for first loves. We all have that special person that we wish we could run into now and pick up where we left off. Truth is most of us would be disappointed if we did. Nice thing about a memory is that it's pure. It can never compete with reality.
She had that wholesome look, that seems to have passed into history.
I remember women back in the 60s and 70s were just as you described them; gorgeous and wholesome. As time passed, we no longer see women like that. I'm not sure what happened in our society. I'm thankful I grew up during that time.
So true ! I grew up then and I am happy that I did 🙏 Many times I was described as being kind wholesome and genuine and those were the best compliments I could’ve ever received ❤️
Nothing but 400 lb freaks with peircings, tatoos. With mental issues, due to nature and nuture. How this country has fallen,,,!
We all had a summer of 42 ! Life never gets better !
There isn't a man nor boy who didn't fall in love with Jennifer O'Neil watching this. Every man has a Summer of 42' somewhere in their past that, like Hermie, stays with them forever... As moving as the Theme is? the real genius behind this film was the great care and subtlety that Director Robert Mulligan gave it..
I watched it when I was 27... Today 38.. still gets emotional when I watch it.. music is out of the world.. and .. she..... God.. No words.....
Watched it for the first time months before my 31st birthday when I was still 30 what lead me watch it was through the late Syrian poet & diplomat Nizar Qabbani (1923-1998) from one of his books 📚 " the Book of Love , كتاب الحب Kitaab al-Hubb " c.1970 and the music was played in the background and since then I started getting intrigued about the movie 🎬 that I shared it with my brother, he too liked it very much , he was more into Jennifer O'Neil than anything to whom he found extremely attractive
1997 to 2024 - timeless for me.
THE SUMMER OF 73 I WAS PREPPARING TO MARRY THE LOVE OF MY LIFE! FIFTY YEARS LAYER I STILL ADORE HIM!
I really was feeling deeply moved in the theatre.. . Jennifer was so stunning, the young man entranced with her. ..all so touching. ❤️
My feelings too.
I never saw her again,BUT IN A VERY SPECIAL WAY I LOST HERMIE FOR EVER!😢😢
One of the most haunting movies I've ever seen. Based on events the writer lived in his own life one summer on an island vacation.
I agree !
Makes me think of summer 1966. I was 16 he was probably 25 years older. We never talked about age. Hewas my first love...great love...never forgotten...❤
OMG, this movie explains a lot between relationships and heartbreak.
Beautiful song and movie when I was growing up.
Jennifer is so beautiful and this music captures everything in this film and i am a bloke !
Magnificent story....Real life sometimes is more amazing than fiction (Y)

A superb and beautiful piece of writing. They don't make them like this anymore !!👌

Beautiful film with beautiful music and a most beautiful actress never to be forgotten.
This really happened to me.. living in Hagerman Idaho at the time. My Dorothy was Kathy Lynch.
Lovely tender story..lovely music❤
Absolutely love the theme performed by Michel LeGrand. Personally I enjoy his style a lot more. The movie was memorable. Great casting.
It was composed by him.
ohhhh..... this music, this movie the story.... haunting absolutely haunting... i just cry and cry everytime...
@Incognito Panda-I think we all do my friend. 😊
OMG she was so beautiful, she just had that look. I loved this movie. The book was great too. I've read it 3 times. Some times I dust off the book and just re-read it. Jennifer was injured after falling off a horse she was riding I think, which was why her acting career wasn't so pronounced. What a Gem she was.

Impresionante
Such a Beautiful film , stunning Music courtesy of Mr legrand , & innocent childhood dreams & memories. Truly wonderful ❤
To this day my favorite move. Every young teenage boy has his own summer of 42😊
Yep and mine was a foolish nightmare of wasted time and life, 1968 thru 1969.
My year was the summer of 1960 in the N.Y. Catskill mountains. All these years... can never forget Francine and "my summer of 42".
Michel Legrand is Ace of Diamonds Happy Birthday to Michel Legrand Blessings and Hugs 👑💜REST IN POWER
Michael Legrands music. .. so beautiful..
In everybody's life there is a summer of 42. I watched it 60 years ago when I was 16. What an effective....
So beautiful movie. RIP Michel, your music is eternal
This theme sums up the film in tones that bring that sad but happy memory that all men have of their first love, their loss of virginity to an older woman. Mine was at 17 to a 28 yr old divorcee. Every time I hear or play this song it takes me back to those few nights before circumstances caused us to part. Thank you Michel, your music lives on in my heart, my other favourite is Windmills of Your Mind.
Beautiful arrangement....
Beautiful and haunting. It has always touched me where words can't reach
The standards of beauty change with time, but Jennifer O'Neill will be considered beautiful for eternity.
what an extraordinally made production of my all- time´s song and performance s of these great artists! Tears are not an option, they are essential..
superbe composition grand musicien Monsieur Legrand
One of my favorite coming of age stories. So sweet I just got a cavity.
Very nostalgic! It seems that I remember a beautiful love story.

The film is a Masterpiece, beautifully directed by Robert Mulligan. And Jennifer O'Neill ! Her classic--forever, dark Irish beauty. ---------------------WolfSky9
Está película me impactó de tal manera que he recordado su música para siempre. Claro que entonces yo era adolescente
Y yo, siempre la he recordado y recordaré
What a wonderful CHANSON..
I am speechless when I saw the end the inevitability of the circumstances which will last in our minds for a long. The music played in the end was absolutly beautiful I still can't come out of it.
Meravigliosa,grazie maestro Legrand

The film and the music always bring back that memory. The time of my life I had but never enough........
