    Nice conversion! That bar across the ceiling is used as both a grab handle for balance and hanging IV bags. The safe is of course for narcotics such as morphine, valium etc.. The seat across from the bench is called a CPR seat. I love that it has a sink. That's rare in an EMS unit. The closets outside, in our trucks at least, housed tactical rescue gear, extrication tools, oxygen tanks, firefighting gear etc..
    Negative energy? Well, it's like this. Every man and woman that's become an EMT or medic, has done so out of love and a sense of duty. The depth of the character of those people and their sacrifices outweigh whatever negative energy passed through that truck. They don't call them death squads. They call them rescue squads. There's a reason for that. Any residual negative energy will be overwhelmed by the awesome positivity of the two of you. Love always wins. ;)
    Again, congrats on the awesome build and you two keep doing what you're doing!

    My office is a retired ambulance. It's the perfect work space; plenty of cabinets, storage, etc. I've written four novels, two cookbooks, a memoir, and a gift book in here. I can't imagine a better place to work.

    I'm a former flight nurse and paramedic and current avid camper. I've spent hundreds of hours in an ambulance...but this is the BEST use for one that I could imagine! The medic sits in the swivel chair at the head of the patient and needs to be able to reach all of the equipment and supplies. I love how you've adapted that efficient design into your home life. It seems very calming to have your belongings stored in such an orderly fashion. Chatty side note....the locked cabinet was for narcotics, etc. You both seem like very lovely people. I hope to meet you along the way someday.

    My husband and I have nearly the same model and we LOVE IT!! We were looking at the fancy Mercedes RVs for almost $100,000 to travel in. Why? For $12,500 on Craigslist we have an amazing travel vehicle with incredible storage. Yes, every time we stop for gas people ask about it. While some people have done major renovation to their ambulances, we have hardly done a thing except convert the bench into a bed. It's perfect and easy to clean, with quality materials inside and out.

      cause some people dont want to live in a confined space where people have died and bodily fluids have seeped into any nook and cranny. plus its got shitty milage. Other than that its pretty cool.

    Pretty nice rig. It looks like they didn't have to do a whole lot to it other than build the futon, add some kitchen items and paint it gray. Ambulances are great bases to build whatever you want recreation-wise. They could even take that side window and turn it into a window/screen and get some good cross breezes.

    Nice re-build which remained faithful to a true AMBLANCE ! GOOD JOB! I have seen this interior color scheme for sale the red & white its very nice! I think this couple did a very nice job. I've seen some people tear ambulances all the way down to the insulation and then tear out the insulation WHAT A WASTE OF TIME & money, as 90% of these ambulances come with more than adequate insulation & cabinets no need to tear it down. My neighbor took out the partition between the cab & box to open up pass-through & saw that the rig was properly insulated & decided not to tear box down to insulation. I've seen others tear down to insulation & see that their rig was properly insulated and did not rip out insulation and felt they should have left the walls alone and had a hard time putting old walls back up to cover up insulation. I would think watching many of these youtube rebuilds would be the best thing to do prior to buying an ambulance or any vehicle for a rebuild!
    When I was a 19 yo army medic I had to sleep in a military ambulance for 3 nights. The ambulance was real tall green box with a big red cross on it this was 1980 it had 2 fold down cots from the wall to sleep on & one of us had to sleep on the floor. I have not seen any military ambulance rebuilds on youtube nor have I seen any for sale online. I've seen military vehicles for sale like hum-V in bad shape but no ambulances maybe TRATOR gov left them behind in Afghanistan for talaban!!

    Great job! I'm in the process of kitting out a Type II ambulance for a weekend camper (a non-box type Econoline style ambulance). I chose an ambulance for exactly the same reasons you did - pre-wired, inverter installed already, shore power capable, cabinets done, etc. That little locked "safe" cabinet - that was for locked narcotic storage when the ambulance was in service - cause people will break into a parked ambulance to try and get the fun drugs. Did you change the cabinets to have those tip-out fronts? My vehicle only has the slide plexiglass fronts - which are great since nothing falls out when traveling ! Great job you two !

    It’s disturbing to me how many people make negative comments about folks dying in the back of your ambulance. The back of my ambulance is a sacred space, and yes people have died there, but in no means does that give the space a negative energy. People also are given a fighting chance at life back there, people’s pain is taken away. Some of the best, most meaningful moments of my life have happened in the back of my ambulance. Fuck the haters, they will never know what life, and death for that matter, is all about. Thanks for sharing your space with us. If you ever get a chance to ride with medics, you’ll see that even when things are going really poorly, we do our best and keep laughing. Take that energy with you friends!

    I was all set to buy a skoolie short bus but these ambulances make so much sense! All the storage, interior/exterior lighting, inverter, 110 outlets,, and seat/desk area is already done. I'm looking at a class III (E450 with 8' wide box). The oxygen tank compartment will house my propane tank. I'll add a T.V., with satellite, sofa bed, fridge, cooktop, microwave, fantastic fan, C.M. detector, encased awning, and solar setup. Those exterior compartments are great for camping gear and my AGM's.

    I bought an ex-ambulance to use as mobile storage and camping. I basically did no reno at all because the interior is already perfect with the storage and bench seat. To me, this is the best vehicle for an inexpensive camper. You don’t HAVE to renovate it because the interior already has storage and a bench that works as a single bed. The aisle is 4 wide’ (big enough for two people) so by simply throwing a mattress down, that could have been the seat cushion for the bench (which is 6’ long), you could have a larger bed. The storage compartment behind the passenger seat is large enough to use as a tiny bathroom if necessary, but I wouldn’t even add plumbing. The windows in mine are tinted, so I get plenty of sunlight but still feel like I have privacy. The materials in the interior are inherently strong and easy to clean. Access between the box and the cab is amazing, because you don’t have to go outside to drive away.

    Nice conversion! I drove one exactly like this, just with 2WD, as a medic in the city and they got absolutely dogged.....driven hard and only retired when they were pretty much non-repairable. And if I had one to convert first thing I would do is pull every surface apart on the inside and clean it about 10 times with soap, water and bleach to wash away years of blood and other body fluids that seep into very nook and crannie. The bodies are built to take the daily abuse they get and yours in an excellent example of how they can be re-purposed as an rv. Best bet is finding one from a small city or rural dept that has less miles and abuse, which is what yours looks like. Awesome work!

    • @bens9754
      @bens9754 6 років тому

      Retired ambulances from the richer/larger municipalities usually get sold off to the rural departments, particularly voly departments that don't have the funds to buy brand new ones. And then THEY run them until the thing totally dies. lol
      My city retires them around every 4 years, we have 4 ambos (city is 11 square miles) and basically buy a new one every year. Our old trucks get sold off, usually around 75-100k miles on them when we retire them. lol

    Let's say I bought an old Antonov AN-2 (very large single-engine Russian bi-plane, maybe the largest single engine biplane ever produced) would I be able to do this? There are so many airstrips around the U.S. and the Antonov is totally big enough to live out of. It's also super rugged so it's able to land basically anywhere, even on water with the pontoon attachments. Being a biplane it makes ALOT of lift so it doesn't need a lot of runway to take off and land so this thing is really just asking to be turned into a flying camper van :D

    • @DanSlotea
      @DanSlotea 6 років тому +1

      Samson H do you have enough money for oil and gas? Maybe you don't realize how much of both a radial engine uses. Also the speed is not great so the "mileage" is really bad. Otherwise yeah, it would be an awesome camper. You can buy on as cheap as 5000 Euros.

    • @bens9754
      @bens9754 6 років тому

      Also need a pilot's license, which isn't the cheapest thing ever. And to not be bound by only day time/clear weather flying, you would need IFR certification, and to file IFR flight plans....in addition to everything Dan Slotea said.

    • @DanSlotea
      @DanSlotea 6 років тому

      Ben S PPL is about 6000 Euros, but for AN-2 you need a licensed mechanic and a co-pilot. It's not an airplane to fly solo. VFR is enough for "camping".

      David yes well I’m sure you live in a nice comfy house that your to busy working to actually enjoy. Not everyone is ok with being slaves to a monetary system of debt. What’s the point of having things if you can rarely enjoy them? These people may be living in a small place, and it’s quite clear they look a bit dirty, BUT regardless of that fact they are so very happy. They have a level of happiness that no amount of money can buy.

    I worked as a medic to long on one of these so I don’t know if I could live in one knowing what I know however this is awesome. I took my first ride in one as a patient 6 weeks ago. I had a heart attack at 42 years old. Way to young. I guess being a first responder for 20 years took its toll on me. Love the build and love your style. Get out and live cause life is short. The walls of this ambulance know how short life can be so use that as a reminder to live. Also you should do an art project and hang it in there in honor of all who lost their life inside that thing. Honor them by living the best life you can. Hope that’s not to weird.
